Teen Titans Press Kit: Puffy AmiYumi

Teen Titans Theme by Puffy AmiYumi

Singers Ami Onuki and Yumi Yoshimura have long maintained a large following among U.S. fans of Japanese anime and manga; in fact, they launched their 2002 North American tour with an appearance at the Los Angeles Anime Expo. That following is bound to increase with NICE., which features “Teen Titans Theme,” an English-language track created for the forthcoming new Cartoon Network series, Teen Titans, based on the famous eighties-era, DC Comics superheroes. The track itself is a shout-along instant classic that somehow manages to blend the spy-movie cool of Johnny Rivers’ “Secret Agent Man” with the adolescent excitement of the Bay City Rollers’ “Saturday Night.”

NICE. is released August 12, 2003 in US/Canada from Bar None Records and Sony Music Canada
* Featuring brand new artwork
* Includes the brand new theme song for Teen Titans!

The Lyrics

When there’s trouble you know who to call
Teen Titans!
From their tower, they can see it all
Teen Titans!

When there’s evil on the attack
You can rest knowing they got your back
Cuz when the world needs heroes on patrol
Teen Titans GO!

With their superpowers they unite
Teen Titans!
Never met a villain that they liked
Teen Titans!

They’ve got the bad guys on the run
They never stop ‘till the job gets done
Cuz when the world is losin’ all control
Teen Titans GO!

Teen Titans GO!

If your heart is black you better watch out
You cannot escape the team
When they catch you there won’t be any doubt
You’ve been beaten by the teens
beaten by the teens

T-E-E-N! T-I-T-A-N-S! TEEN TITANS! LET’S GO!
T-E-E-N! T-I-T-A-N-S! TEEN TITANS! LET’S GO!
T-E-E-N! T-I-T-A-N-S! TEEN TITANS! LET’S GO!
T-E-E-N! T-I-T-A-N-S! TEEN TITANS! LET’S GO!

* (repeat)

Teen Titans GO!
Teen Titans GO!
One, two, three, four, GO!
Teen Titans!

With the east-meets-west pop fusion of their latest disc, NICE., Tokyo-based duo Puffy AmiYumi have created a mirror-ball-shaped world all their own. It’s a place with no language barriers or musical borders, where you can find dance floor-friendly, all-ages-welcome, nonstop fun.

Ami and Yumi have never been your average Japanese pop stars. The duo has experienced chart-topping success and all the perks of teen-idol-dom in their homeland since the release of their million-selling 1996 debut single, “Asia No Junshin (True Asia).” They’ve hosted their own TV show, Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa Puffr; been featured in countless commercials; and have had their tee-shirts-and-jeans-clad likenesses turned into dolls and action figures, along with all sorts of other cool merchandise. Unlike many of their flash-in the-pan peers, however, Puffy AmiYumi has enjoyed a far more long-lasting and artistically accomplished career. They’ve attracted a loyal fan base of global proportions -encompassing everyone from indie rockers to Japan-ophiles to world music enthusiasts – and they’ve enthralled U.S. rock critics with their always surprising, genre-busting sound.

Upon the release of their 2002 compilation album, An Illustrated History, which brought North American fans up to date with Puffy AmiYumi’s many Asian hits, Time Out New York called their music “absolutely irresistible… Onuki and Yoshimura zoom through girl-group pop, disco, lounge, surf and rock with carefree, cut-and-paste abandon.” The pair proved they were more than just a studio confection with a sold-out, barnstorming tour of the U.S. and Canada that had audiences pogo-ing in unison from L.A. to Toronto. Highlights of their Rolling Debut Revue tour are featured as an exclusive video extra on NICE.

NICE. was produced by American power-pop whiz Andy Sturmer, former Jellyfish drummer, and recorded in Los Angeles and Tokyo. It’s a delirious blend of killer hooks, playful punk, funky disco breaks, new wave-style electronics, day-gb pyschedelica and even some jangly 12-string guitar. The duo pay homage to artists ranging from the Beach Boys to the Byrds to the Buggles and, with their amazing album cover art, to John & Yoko. Puffy AmiYumi’s latest is arguably their greatest, and very NICE, indeed.
