Tamaran

Tamaran History

Koriand'r is taken away by the Gordanians.

The planet Tamaran lies approximately 26 light-years from Earth in the star -system Vega.

Tamaran is populated by a race of golden-skinned humanoids who (unlike Earthlings, whose ancestral heritage can be traced back to primates) are descended from a feline race and who worship the goddess X' Hal. Many millennia ago, the Tamaranean race either migrated or was brought to Tamaran from the neighboring planet Okaara. As they made the world their own, the Tamaraneans established a planetary government that evolved into a feudal society. Each landmass was ruled by a royal family, under the dominion of which exist smaller city-states ruled by Influential families.

The Tamaraneans are a passionate people driven more by emotion than reason. While they are unusually fierce warriors, their capacity for love is even greater than their capacity for hate; as a result, war and strife were for many centuries long forgotten on Tamaran. Instead, the people channeled their energies into creating a tropical utopia, a paradise where they could live in harmony with the wildlife and where battle skills were maintained largely for ceremony's sake.

Unfortunately, with the rise in power in the Vegan system of the bloodthirsty race called the Citadel, Tamaran was eventually reintroduced to war. Tamaran re-ouffitted its armies and, led by the royal house of King Myand'r, managed to lend off a Citadelian invasion for more than an Earth century. Tamaran's defenses, however, were finally breached when Myand'r's daughter Komand'r defected to the Citadel and revealed crucial military secrets. In the ensuing battle, millions of Tamaraneans were killed; the entire race would have been annihilated had not King Myand'r ruefully negotiated a solemn truce, the signature of which involved sacrificing his other daughter, Koriand'r, to the slavers of the Citadel.

Civil War

Despite this truce, Tamaran's troubles were far from over. The citizens of Tamaran saw the sacrifice of their beloved Princess Koriand'r as a tremendous act of weakness on Myand'r's part and instigated a worldwide civil war. Komand'r returned and in spite of the intervention of Koriand'r - now known as Starfire of the New Titans - she successfully usurped Myand'r's throne.

During this time, Komand'r seized control of Tamaran, with her parents acting as her advisors. Koriand'r returned to Earth.

Later, Komand'r had come to realize that it was her own hate that made her despise the world that had spurned her. Using her abilities, Komand'r helped to free Tamaran and stopped a terrorist invasion. Komand'r ruled Tamaran justly and honorably, with both a warrior's fist and a queen's heart.

Tamaran Destroyed

Starfire later returned to Tamaran, after a savage attack by an evil version of her teammate, Raven. Upon her return, she met and fell in love with a man named Ph'yzzon, a general in the army. After a quick courtship, Koriand'r and Ph'yzzon married.

Meanwhile, Victor Stone (formerly Cyborg) had merged his consciousness with the alien race known as Technis, in an effort to save the dying race. Cyborg was reunited with his former teammates as an evil version of Raven tried to destroy her good soul, which lay dormant in the body of Starfire. To ferret out Starfire, evil Raven incited a conflict in the Vegan star system.

The Tamaranean fleet - led by General Ph'yzzon - fought valiantly, but they were overwhelmed. Knowing they couldn't stop the Psions, Ph'yzzon alerted King Myand'r and Queen Mother Luand'r of the situation. The two called for an evacuation plan, to save as many Tamaraneans as possible. However, they themselves decided to stay on the planet, to man what ground defenses remained. But they were no use. The attack by the Psions caused the core of Tamaran to implode, consuming the entire planet and whoever remained on it. As a result, Tamaran was destroyed along with the Technis.

Bye, bye, Tamaran! The unlucky planet gets destroyed in
NEW TITANS #128 [1995]

The Titans were able to destroy evil Raven utterly, and restore good Raven into a new spiritual golden body. Starfire decided to rebuild her culture on a new planet with the surviving Tamaraneans. This world was dubbed New Tamaran.

New Tamaran

When the planet-consuming Sun Eater ravaged the galaxy, New Tamaran lay in its path. An alien woman named Dusk tried to warn the Tamaraneans, but Queen Komand'r was too short-sighted and xenophobic to listen. Starfire believed Dusk and tried to warn her fellow Tamaraneans. Komand'r labeled her sister a traitor and banished her. Starfire left the planet and was unable to prevent its destruction. New Tamaran was engulfed by the Sun Eater – along with many of the remaining Tamaraneans and Koriand'r's new husband, Ph'yzzon.

A Shared Homeworld

Many Tamaraneans were off-world during the explosion of New Tamaran, and sought a new home. Ryand'r, Starfire's younger brother, was influential in finding a new home for his lost Tamaranean people. To this end, he helped lead an invasion on the planet Karna, home of the Gordanians. Ryand'r eventually enlisted the aid of his sister, Starfire. Starfire duped the Titans into believing that the Gordanians were the invaders, knowing they would not understand or agree had they known all the facts. As the battle progressed, the Titans discovered that the Gordanians. weren't the invaders – the Tamaraneans were.

The Titans were able to settle the conflict peacefully when Tempest proposed a treaty. The Gordanians would allow them to stay; In exchange, the Tamaraneans would teach them new trades outside of slavery, and bolster their reputation in the galaxy. Both races agreed to these terms. Koriand'r apologized to her friends for her deception, but elected to remain on Karna and rebuild the culture of her people as Princess.

Our Worlds At War

Shortly afterward, tragedy struck. During the "Our Worlds At War" crisis, a series of Imperiex probes destroyed Karna. This marks the third Tamaranean home planet that was destroyed. The Tamaraneans continue to wander the galaxy, led by their former Queen Komand'r, also known as Blackfire.

X' Hal.

X' Hal. is a living battle goddess worshipped by much of the Vegan System.

Once the greatest warrior of the Vegan system, X' Hal. was primarily responsible for repelling a Psion invasion, and was therefore made the Vegans' high priestess and ruler. The Psions returned, however, killing X' Hal. and experimenting on her lifeless body, eventually converting it to pure energy, which unexpectedly brought her back to life as a powerful battle goddess. Destroying the attacking Psions, she then turned her uncontrolled power against her own people, destroying three of the twenty-five Vegan worlds before she could be captured and brought under control by those who would later become the Warlords of Okaara.

TALES OF THE TEEN TITANS (mini-series) #4 [1982].
A sister betrayed!
From TALES OF
THE TEEN TITANS
(mini-series) #4 [1982].

Early Years

Komand'r was the eldest child of Tamaran's royal family, and the first princess born in almost a century. As such, she should have been courted and showered with honors, but Komand'r was instead reviled. On the day of her birth, the dreaded Citadel Empire attacked and destroyed the western Tamaranean city of Kysarr and killed three thousand citizens in her name. Due to no fault of her own, Komand'r was for all time inextricably linked with Tamaran's day of infamy.

To make matters worse for the infant, Tamaran had previously been a paradise, its people strong and proud and able to harness the rays of their sun to give them the power of flight. But Komand'r was born crippled by Tamaranean standards She could not harness the sun's energy, and found herself earthbound.

Komand'r grew up hated by a population that saw her as a symbol of their own weakness. They denied her birthright, and refused to allow her to be named Princess of Tamaran and next in line for its matriarchal throne. That title, privilege, honor, and celebration was later bestowed on her younger sister, Koriand'r. Komand'r's rage grew inward, and when she could, her hatred for her planet was focused on her hapless sister.

Deadly Betrayal

Years passed. Although the Citadel controlled Tamaran through King Myand'r, the King quietly sent his two daughters to train with the Warlords of Okaara in the traditional art of war. His silent hope was that his children would rebel against their dreaded enemy and free their planet where their father could not.

But Komand'r's anger continued to grow as she learned combat. During training exercises she ferociously lashed out at Koriand'r and sought her sister's dream. After such an open attack, Komand'r realized she could not return home. Instead, she joined the Citadel and quickly rose through their ranks to become a warrior fighting her own planet. Komand'r arranged a treaty between the Citadel and Tamaran, but one of its conditions was that Koriand'r be exiled from her planet. Princess Koriand'r was then sent off her home planet and forced into barbaric and humiliating slavery.

Komand'r and Starfire battle to the death in
NEW TEEN TITANS ANNUAL #1 [1982].

Years later, Komand'r and Koriand'r found themselves together again, this time, as prisoners of the Psions, a race of cold-blooded scientists who delighted in torturous physical experiments. The Psions subjected both women to conditions that tested the extent to which the Tamaranean body could absorb solar power. The experiment backfired when it inadvertently gave them both nearly unlimited energy powers

Civil War & Rise to Power

Komand'r rules Tamaran!

Komand'r ‘s sister, Koriand'r was called back to Tamaran and went through with a marriage of state to quell a Civil War - although it put a strain on her relationship with Dick Grayson. During this time, Komand'r seized control of Tamaran, with her parents acting as her advisors. Koriand'r returned to Earth, and began to mend her relationship with Dick Grayson.

Blackfire returns to bedevil Starfire in OUTSIDERS #32 [2005].

A Planet's Destruction

Starfire later returned to Tamaran, after a savage attack by an evil version of her teammate, Raven. Evil Raven later incited a conflict in the Vegan star system. The Psions brutally attacked Tamaran, leading to a mass evacuation of the planet. Although many Tamaraneans survived, King Myand'r and Queen Mother Luand'r perished in the explosion. As Queen, Blackfire decided to rebuild her culture on a new planet with the surviving Tamaraneans. This world was dubbed New Tamaran.

New Tamaran was engulfed by the Sun Eater – along with many of the remaining Tamaraneans.

Back With a Vengeance

Following the explosion, it was assumed Komand'r was killed as well. But the proud Warrior Queen resurfaced again during the Rann/Thanagar War. With the remaining Tamaraneans reduced to a wandering race, Komand'r was determined to find a home for her people regardless of the cost!

In her lust for power, Blackfire killed Hawkwoman and sought to murder Hawkman and Hawkgirl as well. After a brutal battle, Hawkman subdued the tempestuous Tamaranean and used the Psion's technology to strip Blackfire of her starbolt abilities. Now powerless, the bitter Blackfire was left more enraged than ever.

A 1983 drawing of Blackfire by George Pérez.

Artist George Pérez on Blackire [from The Titans Companion, 2005]: "Blackfire, that was just the super-bitch. She was everything that Kory was not, as far as a sweet, loving, caring person. She was just the bad sister. She was the evil queen, and allowed us a good, strong villain to get them off Earth and onto one of their first cosmic stories. [She was] probably one of the first characters I’d been dealing with where I thought, “Okay, I can draw black leather, a bit of chain work... ah, my fetish fixation can be manifested a little on Blackfire!” My only regret is since I was doing layouts, by the time Romeo inked her, he did not put any of the black sheen on her legging, so she no longer looked like she was wearing that black leather type of pants that I gave her, the tights that she had. You could see it on the cover, but not in the inside of the book, and I said, “Oh, that’s a shame,” because she was Blackfire [and she] didn’t have very much black on her. But the bad girl is always fun to draw, and from what I could tell, when Marv wrote it, was fun to write. I just enjoyed it."

"Also the fact it was our Star Wars storyline in the Titans, where we did all these aliens and going to other planets [made it fun]. That, I believe, was the first time we had done it on Titans. Even though we showed Kory leaving Tamaran [and] we’d had them go to the inter-dimensional world of Azarath, we had them battling gods, it wasn’t until the Kory storyline that we actually got them off Earth and dealt with an intergalactic story which ordinarily would not be the type of story you would see, or you should see a character like Robin in. When Robin would do that with Batman it seemed wrong. Somehow it seemed right doing it with the Titans, because you had an alien character."

Because of me Psion experiment, Komand'r's body is a massive solar battery capable of storing tremendous amounts of energy and then releasing it as destructive starbolts. Komand'r is also a highly trained warrior possessing a variety of combat skills.

Darkfire

Alias: Ryand'r

Early Years

RIGHT: Kory reunites with her family in NEW TEEN TITANS ANNUAL #1 [1982].

Ryand'r was born as the youngest member to the royal family of Tamaran. He grew up during the Citadel War and witnessed many hardships. Among them, his one sister Komand'r betrayed his people to the Citadel while his other sister Koriand'r was turned into a slave. Ryand'r was reunited with his sister Koriand'r many years later, after she escaped slavery to join the New Teen Titans. Starfire and the Titans - with the help of the Omega Men - helped repel Citadel forces and defeat Ryand'r's sister, Komand'r, who had joined forces with the Citadel.

The Omega Men

Growing up during the Citadel War with two of the fiercest warriors in the Vegan system as elder sisters, Ryand'r did not try to excel as either fighter or politician. While studying to be a warrior on Okaara, Ryan's skill at communications science became the deciding factor in his being chosen by Primus as a new recruit for the Omega Men. While on his first mission, Ryand'r was captured and experimented on by Psions. The operation triggered an ability to concentrate great amounts of energy through his hands. Rather than shooting bursts of energy outward, Ryand'r's hands become white-hot.

Ryand'r, along with the Omega Men, was called back to Tamaran to witness the marriage of his sister Koriand'r as he joined his family in opposing his sister Komand'r's usurpation of the throne. Following these events, Ryand'r decided to stay on Tamaran and not rejoin what was left of the Omega Men. Ryand'r later accepted Komand'r as queen, after a number of altercations and conflicts with her.

Komand'r's tactics as ruler were oppressive to her brother, Ryand'r. As such, he resolved to make his escape from his sister's clutches. Using a jury rigged subspace communicator he had built, he sent out a message on the Omega Men's communication channel. He then flew straight up into the stratosphere of Tamaran, hoping that someone had heard his signal and would come for him. He almost flew too high, and was passing out before he awoke to find himself on a ship with a number of his old teammates, including Ynda, with whom he was reunited.

Ryand'r fight for his people
in TITANS #18 [2000].

Utter Destruction

Ryand'r was also off-world when New Tamaran was devastated by the Sun Eater. He was influential in finding a new home for his lost Tamaranean people.

Ryand'r later rejoined his Omega Men teammates in preventing the evil Lady Styx from acquiring four mystical heartstones that, together, would give her godlike powers. After finding one of the four Heartstones, Ryand'r discovered his powers were increased to new levels. Assuming the codename Darkfire, Ryand'r and the Omega Men stopped Lady Styx's plans for cosmic apocalypse.

While on his first mission, Ryand'r was captured and experimented on by Psions. The operation initiated an ability to concentrate great amounts of energy in his hands. Rather than shooting bursts of energy outward, Ryand'r's hands become white-hot. He also possesses the Tamaranean ability to absorb energy directly from sunlight and convert it to flight power.

Myand'r and Luand'r

Koriand'r is taken away by the Gordanians.

Early Years

Myand'r's father and brothers were killed in battle against the Citadel, and his mother went willingly into slavery to prevent further destruction of the planet. Thus began the tradition of the Tamaranean Royal Family sacrificing all to protect their world. Myand'r eventually met and fell in love with Luand'r. They married and had three children.

Komand'r was the eldest child of Tamaran's royal family, and the first princess born in almost a century. As such she should have been courted and showered with honors, but Komand'r was instead reviled. On the day of her birth, the dreaded Citadel Empire attacked and destroyed the western Tamaranean city of Kysarr and killed three thousand citizens in her name. Due to no fault of her own, Komand'r was for all time inextricably linked with Tamaran's day of infamy.

Myand'r and Luand'r had a second child, Koriand'r . Koriand'r's birth to the royal family of the planet Tamaran was an occasion of great joy to all but her older sister Komand'r, who, born sickly and thus unable to fly like her peers and judged unfit to rule, deeply resented her new sibling. As the girls grew older, Komand'r became more and more wantonly cruel, even as their father led Tamaran's forces against the invading warships of the Citadel first planet of the Vegan system.

Finally, Myand'r and Luand'r had another child. Ryand'r was born as the youngest member to the royal family of Tamaran. He grew up during the Citadel War and witnessed many hardships.

A Family Torn Apart

Kory reunites with her family in NEW TEEN TITANS ANNUAL #1 [1982].

Years passed. Although the Citadel controlled Tamaran through King Myand'r, the King quietly sent his two daughters to train with the Warlords of Okaara in the traditional art of war. His silent hope was that his children would rebel against their dreaded enemy and free their planet where their father could not.

Eventually Komand'r and Koriand'r, together with youngster of the various Vegan worlds, were taken to be trained in combat by the Warlords of Okaara. Komand'r then defected to the Citadel, revealing Tamaran's defense secrets and instigating a series of devastating attacks on her homeworld in which millions were killed. The Citadel invaded peaceful Tamaran and quickly crippled its defenses. They demanded that King Myand'r turn over his daughter, Koriand'r, to the Citadel in exchange for peace. Myand'r accepted. His daughter would be sacrificed, but the paradise that was Tamaran would endure.

After six years of torture, Koriand'r escaped. Eventually, she made her getaway to Earth, where she joined the Teen Titans. The newly formed group traveled to Tamaran and vanquished the Citadel and Psions, freeing Tamaran. Koriand'r was reunited with her parents after years of separation.

Later, Koriand'r returned to Tamaran to learn that the planet was about to be plunged into a civil war. In order to keep peace between the ruling houses of Tamaran, Myand'r pledged that his daughter would marry Karras, heir to the ruling Southern continent. This would be a political marriage as both Koriand'r and Karras loved others.

During this time, Komand'r seized control of Tamaran, with her parents acting as her advisors. Koriand'r returned to Earth, and began to mend her relationship with Dick Grayson. Myand'r and Luand'r continued to advise Komand'r, which helped to temper her demeanor.

Utter Destruction

Myand'r and Luand'r meet their end as Tamaran is destroyed in
NEW TITANS #128 [1995]

As a result, Tamaran was destroyed.

Myand'r and Luand'r were killed in the explosion - sacrificing their own lives for their homeworld.
