Superman

Alias: Clark Kent, Kal-El

Secret Origin of Superman

Rocketed to Earth from the doomed planet of Krypton, baby Kal-El was found and raised by a Kansas couple named Jonathan and Martha Kent. The kind-hearted Kents named the boy Clark and watched in amazement as - little by little - he absorbed the sun’s energy, which gave him incredible strength, invulnerability, heightened senses, and the ability to fly.

After traveling the world, Clark moved to Metropolis and adopted the costumed identity of Superman. Sporting horn-rimmed spectacles, Clark Kent earned a spot as star reporter for the Daily Planet. It was there he met and fell in love with fiesty reporter Lois Lane - who later became his wife.

Superman & Superboy

When Superman was seemingly killed in battle by the alien Doomsday, the world faced a world without a Superman. In an attempt to clone Superman, Cadmus Labs combined the Kryptonian DNA of Superman with the human DNA of Lex Luthor. The impetuous clone escaped the lab and later became known as the hero, Superboy.

Not long after this, Superman shared memories of Krypton with Superboy, who he came to regard as a member of his family, considering the genesis of the Teen of Steel. Superboy received his Kryptonian name, Kon-EI, from Superman at that time. Superboy was taken in by Superman's Earth parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent, under the guise of Conner Kent, cousin to Clark. Later enrolled in SmalIville High, Conner attempted to live a more normal life.

Superboy from Earth-Prime and Alexander Luthor from Earth Three - survivors of the original Crisis on Infinite Earths - returned in a misguided plan to restore the multiverse and create a new "perfect earth." Superboy was summoned back into battle when the delusional Superboy-Prime attacked him. Locked in savage combat, Superboy and Superboy-Prime collided into Luthor's tower, creating a huge explosion. When the smoke cleared, the tower was destroyed, but Superboy was suffering critical wounds. As Wonder Girl rushed to his side, Superboy died in her arms, having sacrificed his own life to save the universe.

Kal-El’s powers were latent until his teenage years. His kryptonian physiology absorbs immense energy from Earth’s yellow sun, enabling him to fly at incredible speeds, and endowing him with super-strength, invulnerability (his only weaknesses are green kryptonite radiation and magic), ultra-acute hearing, freezing breath, immense lung capacity and a range of vision including X-ray vision (he can see through anything except lead) and heat vision.

Jonathan and Martha Kent

THE KENTS

The Kents

Finding an infant in a crashed rocket ship years ago, the Kents
had no idea how much their newfound adopted son would change their lives. Jonathan and Martha raised young Clark to be a moral and conscientious person, a reflection of their own beliefs. Immediately following his unplanned debut saving the NASA space plane Constitution, Martha and Jonathan helped Clark to realize that his powers should be used for the benefit of all humankind. Hand-sewing a costume, Martha designed the look that would soon be recognized the world over - the traditional blue and red costume of Superman.

Since Clark has left home, Jonathan and Martha have kept in close contact with him thanks to his weekly visits home, flying in at super-speed so as not to be noticed by neighbors. Following Jonathan’s heart attack (and subsequent recovery) brought on by the news that Clark had “died” at the hands of Doomsday, the Kents have changed many of their habits and currently engage in vigorous exercise.

The Kents & Superboy

When Superboy left the protective care of Cadmus, he eventually found a new home in Smallville, with the Kents. Superboy assumed the identity of Conner Kent, cousin to Clark. Under the guise of Conner Kent, the Teen of Steel enrolled in SmalIville High in an attempt to live a more normal life. Tragically, Superboy sacrificed his own life to save the universe during the Infinite Crisis.

Krypto I

Superboy bonds with Krypto in SUPERBOY #16.

The story began in the aftermath of Superman's death. An old lady in Suicide Slum had a dog that delivered a litter of pups she couldn't care for. She decided to throw the pups into the river where they would eventually die. Bibbo, Superman's friend, decided he would rescue the pups and give them the home they deserved. Unfortunately, only one pup survived, the pup Bibbo named "Krypton," after Superman, who was last of his litter too. When Bibbo tried to get a dog tag for his new friend, the dealer only engraved six letters of the name, leading to the dog to be named "Krypto" instead.

After the Fall of Metropolis, the fallen city made Bibbo fear for Krypto's safety, so he entrusted Krypto to Superboy. Unfortunately, the boy and dog were constantly irritated with each other. When Superboy left Hawaii, Krypto stayed with Superboy's friend in Hawaii, Hillary Chang. Upon revisiting, Krypto decided he wanted to stay with Superboy at Cadmus.

When Cadmus was attacked by the Agenda, Krypto helped lead the other freakish animals of Cadmus against the Agenda.

Krypto II

Superman entrusts the care of Krypto to
Superboy in TEEN TITANS #7 [2004]

Secret Origin of Krypto

Brainiac 13 had set up a plan to entrap Superman on a parallel planet that looked like Krypton. Brainiac managed to download information from the past; Extracting Jor-El's idea of an ideal world, Brainiac went about creating a false world that world ensnare his greatest foe. In creating this vision based on Jor-El's dreams, Brainiac had also gained access to the Phantom Zone, a dimension in which various non-Kryptonian prisoners were held captive. Brainiac took each individual and altered their DNA to match every Kryptonian being Jor-El had spoken of in his dream, and ultimately took over a planet from the past and gave these beings from the Zone new memories and purpose as parallel Kryptonians.

"Jor-El" sent a message through time and space that eventually reached Clark Kent. Superman and Lois Lane went through a time-traveling inter-dimensional journey to this alternate version of Krypton. Once there, they helped incite a Kryptonian rebellion. The false Krypton eventually faded. But one reminder followed them back to earth - Kal-El's feisty dog, Krypto.

Krypto & Superboy

On Krypton, he was just a normal dog. On Earth, he's a normal dog - with Superman's powers. Realizing that the dog was simply too powerful to have on the loose, Clark brought Krypto to his Fortress of Solitude. But the super-pup grew lonely.

Superman later gave Superboy the task of caring for the super-canine - which he regularly brought to Titans Tower on weekends. While Krypto is extremely loyal, he is not without a mischievous side. Superboy's hardest challenge was keeping Krypto away from Starfire's Tamaranean garden.

Krypto has all the powers of Superman in a canine package.
