Dick Grayson's Bludhaven Connections |
Bridget Clancy is an Irish immigrant of Chinese descent. She left Hong Kong when she was an infant and was adopted by a family who raised her in Ireland. As she entered adulthood, she moved to the United States to attend college. Afterward, she settled in Bludhaven. There she became a landlady at 1013 Parkthorne Avenue, which became home to a diverse group of residents, including Dick Grayson, Jonathan Law, Michael "Mutt" Hogan, Hank "Hero" Hogan, and a former Arkham inmate known as Amygdala.
Bridget, who prefers to be called Clancy, was well loved by all of her tenants. With an Irish lilt, this Chinese beauty makes grungy overalls look appealing. Clancy is a genuinely warm-hearted, no-nonsense gal who can tackle just about any construction job. Nonetheless, she has the yearning to be a doctor in order to help people. She has a tough exterior behind which she hides her emotions.
Unknown to Clancy and the others, Dick Grayson became her guardian angel of sorts. He has even secretly provided the funds needed to keep the building from being taken over, saving the tenants from eviction.
Clancy took an immediate liking to the handsome Grayson when he moved in, even though he has more than once had to cut short a date with her due to his costumed life as Nightwing. Dick tried to make it up to her, but didn't quite realize the extent of the crush she has on him. Clancy, in her spirited way, hides from Dick the intensity of her feelings by playing off how serious she really is. While she continued to pretend she and Dick were just good buddies, she had actually fallen deeply in love with him.
Clancy had a dream come true when a scholarship from Wayne Industries allowed her to enroll in medical school. Meanwhile, she pressed for a more intimate relationship with Dick. Eventually, Clancy accepted that Dick's heart belonged to another - Barbara Gordon - and she left Bludhaven to start her life anew.
Clancy has resurfaced in New York City, where she is studying clinical psychology. Currently, Clancy has started a psychiatric residency at Bellevue Hospital.
Dick's Other Neighbors
Amygdala: Formerly an inmate at Arkham, this giant man-child is apparently cured and completely docile, and resided in Dick's building before it was destroyed.
John Law (the Tarantula): John Law threw himself into his research for his next book - a history of "mystery men" titled Altered Egos - by becoming a "mystery man" himself. Arming himself with a "web gun" and a costume with adhesive surfaces on the boots that enabled him to climb walls, Law became the Tarantula. He was a frequent ally of the Justice Society of America and a member of the All-Star Squadron.
John retired his Tarantula identity shortly after the publication of Altered Egos in the 1960s. Regretfully, the book's popularity was short-lived, and John faded into pulp fiction obscurity A resident of Bludhaven for a number of years, John had become quite the stubborn, old curmudgeon. He still wrote pulp novels on an old battered typewriter, and he casted a critical eye on Bludhaven's new guardian, Nightwing, who had yet to live up to Law's lofty standards of heroism.
Sadly, John Law perished when Blockbuster's vengeance campaign against Nightwing escalated - and Dick Grayson's apartment complex was destroyed by a bomb, killing most of its residents.
Hank ‘Hero' Hogan: Hank "Hero" Hogan lived in this apartment with his wife, Floretta, and their adopted son, Michael. Hank was the proprietor of a cop bar named Hogan's Alley. What you see is what you get with Hogan. He was a former Bludhaven cop who was too honest for the force and left when he could no longer stand the corruption. Hank employed Dick Grayson as one of his hired hands to tend bar at Hogan's Alley before Dick went to the police academy. Hank died along with many others when Blockbuster bombed their apartment complex in a vengeance campaign against Nightwing.
Michael ‘Mutt' Hogan: With the aid of Nightwing, Hank and his wife adopted Michael. Their son was a former street urchin who was known only as "Mutt" because of his mixed ancestry. The Hogans took excellent care of the boy, giving him a loving home. The young rascal also served as an occasional informant for Nightwing. Mutt died along with many others when Blockbuster bombed their apartment complex in a vengeance campaign against Nightwing.
Nightwing #6 [1997]: Dick Grayson finally meets his landlady face to face: a charming Asian girl with an Irish brogue named Bridget Clancy.
Nightwing #12 [1997]: A street urchin is saved by Nightwing, Michael (Mutt) is then adopted by Hank Hogan. A team of doctors work to save Dudley Soames' life. Tad continues his vigilante activities. Batman appears in Dick's apartment.

Blockbuster
Alias: Roland Desmond |
During an invasion of Earth by an alien alliance, the Dominators detonated a gene bomb that awakened the latent metagene in a large numbers of humans, including Roland Desmond. Falling ill to a debilitating malady, Desmond was hospitalized and treated with an experimental steroid. Like his brother, Mark, who was the first Blockbuster, the effects of the treatment made Desmond into a mindless, muscle-bound behemoth. He later escaped during a transfer to another facility but was apprehended by Will Payton, the Starman, and Batman.
Desmond was imprisoned at Belle Reve Prison, from which he later escaped with the help of the demon lord Neron. Striking a bargain with the demon, in exchange for his soul, Blockbuster's intellect was elevated to a level that would match his physical size. Becoming a master strategist, Blockbuster desired to conquer Gotham City first, but he decided to test himself with Bludhaven, to the south. Blockbuster established a criminal empire by slowly taking the city over from then boss Angel Marin. Despite setting himself up and gaining a hold on organized crime in Bludhaven, his power base nevertheless weakened with the arrival of Nightwing as the city's new protector.
Blockbuster is a deadly foe who possesses a diabolically enhanced mind and a body to match. Blockbuster commands respect and loyalty through fear. Many times, he has twisted the heads of those who have disappointed him, snapping their necks to instill fear in others. Only one of his victims, Dudley Soames, has survived, and he may prove to be an additional obstacle in the future.
Desmond's transformation into the oversized Blockbuster triggered an incipient albinism and other latent infirmities that have taken a toll on his defective heart. Medication has done all that it can. Now, the crime lord needed a new heart to keep him alive. After capturing the Gorilla City native Grimm, Blockbuster was able to steal a compatible ape heart from a simian from Gorilla City that saved his life.
Despite a swift consolidation of power, Blockbuster's stranglehold over the city has been weakened by the presence of Nightwing, who took up residence in Bludhaven. Blockbuster concentrated his efforts in eliminating the young hero, but was unsuccessful.
Blockbuster's vengeance campaign escalated as he wrongfully blamed Nightwing for the death of his mother. The criminal kingpin bombed Dick Grayson's apartment complex, killing most of its residents, including Dick's Romanian grandfather. The war was now more personal than ever, as far as Nightwing was concerned. Nightwing even enlisted the help of Bludhaven's newest vigilante - the amoral female Tarantula.
Every attempt to bring in Blockbuster legally failed. Blockbuster had beaten down Nightwing both physically and emotionally. When an exhausted Nightwing confronted Blockbuster, he was at his lowest ebb. The timely arrival of Tarantula turned the tide; She shot Blockbuster dead at point blank range as Nightwing failed to stop her. Nightwing's inaction became a source of tremendous guilt for the young hero. But Blockbuster's death ended his stranglehold over Bludhaven once and for all.
Blockbuster possesses superhuman strength and stamina, as well as enhanced durability. His transformation at the hands of the demon Neron has given him genius level intellect.
Nightwing #7-8 [1997]: Nightwing follows leads to Angel Marin, who shows up dead. Nightwing learns the organized crime of Bludhaven is consolidated by Roland Desmond, the gargantuan genius Blockbuster. After Nightwing has a violent confrontation with Blockbuster, he places a sizable contract on Nightwing's head. Meanwhile, a violent blond teen vigilante [Tad Ryerstad] protects his turf. First appearance of Tad Ryerstad.
Nightwing #13-15 [1997]: Lending his former partner a hand, Batman travels to Bludhaven and aids Nightwing's assault upon Roland Desmond's headquarters. While Batman occupies the energies of hired killers Lady Vic and Stallion, Nightwing takes on Blockbuster himself, destroying the criminal mastermind's home in the process. In a rare display of emotion, Batman expresses his pride in Nightwing.
Nightwing #32-34 [1999]: Blockbuster tries to cure his enlarged heart.
Nightwing #43 [2000]: Nightwing and Nite-Wing narrowly escape death and Nightwing agrees to train Nite-Wing. Dick tells a heartbroken Clancy he is beginning to get serious with Barbara. Torque tries to take advantage of gang warfare to wrest power for himself. Blockbuster plots to secure a new heart from Gorilla City.
Nightwing #44 [2000]: Nite-Wing confronts Chief Redhorn and acquires incriminating files on Blockbuster from him. Blockbuster begins his hunt to find Oracle, who has been pilfering his funds. as Nightwing and Nite-Wing confront Blockbuster with this new information, they are felled by Blockbuster's ally from Gorilla City.
Nightwing #45-46, Birds of Prey #20-21[2000]: "Hunt For Oracle" storyline: Nightwing's archenemy Blockbuster seeks to kill Oracle and destroy her information network because Barbara had pilfered hundreds of millions from the villain's secret offshore accounts. Nightwing is tortured for information on Oracle but is rescued by Cisco Blaine. Blaine, thought to be in Blockbuster's employ, reveals himself as a federal agent undercover trying to bring Blockbuster down. Believing him a criminal threat, Nite-Wing later beats Blaine to death.
Nightwing #87-92 [2003-2004]: Blockbuster's vengeance campaign escalates as he wrongfully blames Nightwing for the death of his mother. The criminal kingpin bombs Dick Grayson's apartment complex, killing most of its residents, including Dick's Romanian grandfather.

Torque
Alias: Dudley Soames |
Inspector Dudley ‘Deadly' Soames was one of the dirtiest cops in the city. A member of various police forces, the London born Soames found his niche in Bludhaven, where he played both sides of the legal fence, feeding information on Blockbuster's criminal dealings to Nightwing while serving Blockbuster as a mob lieutenant. Blockbuster, realizing Soames could be his undoing, so he twisted his head and neck 180 degrees. But Soames didn't die.
Rehabilitated with radical drug therapy by Dr. Sandra Pavaar, Soames beat paralysis and learned to walk again. But Pavaar was unable to restore Soames' head to it's correct position. His head and neck remained twisted backwards. Morbidly dubbing himself Torque, Soames strangled Pavaar and launched a bloody campaign to exact revenge on Blockbuster, Nightwing and anyone else who wronged him.
Nightwing finally brought Soames to justice and he was arrested. As luck would have it, his cell mate was Tad Ryerstad, the violent vigilante named Nitewing. The two plotted and mounted an escape from prison - but Soames was killed during the jailbreak.
Torque wears special glasses with rear view mirrors affixed to the frames in order to see where he's going…. Or who he's killing. As fitting his unique physical condition, he leaves palindromes on the corpses of his victims as a calling card. Torque's weapon of choice is a tommy gun.
Nightwing #11 [1997]: Nightwing delivers Scarecrow to the Bludhaven police. Inspector Dudley Soames's double-dealings finally catch up with him - his neck is broken, wrenched 180-degrees out of joint by a vengeful Blockbuster. Miraculously, Soames survives.
Nightwing #12 [1997]: A street urchin is saved by Nightwing, Michael (Mutt) is then adopted by Hank Hogan. A team of doctors work to save Dudley Soames' life. Tad continues his vigilante activities. Batman appears in Dick's apartment.
Nightwing #13-15 [1997]: Dr. Pavaar - a specialist in micro-neurosurgery - uses experimental surgery to save the life of Dudley Soames.
Nightwing #26-29 [1998-1999]: Morbidly dubbing himself Torque, Soames strangles Dr. Pavaar and launches a bloody campaign to exact revenge on Blockbuster, Nightwing and anyone else who wronged him. First appearance of Dudley Soames as Torque in issue #26.
Nightwing #50 [2000]: Officer Dick Grayson responds to Torque's hostage situation, making it hard for Nightwing to save the day. Nightwing eventually manages to save Mac Arnot and prevent utter carnage as Torque is taken into custody. Torque is introduced to his new cell mate, Tad Ryerstad.

Alias: Tad Ryerstad |
Tad is a product of Bludhaven child services. Found abandoned on Christmas Eve, Tad was absorbed into the city's foster care system. His parents were never found. Tad was nicknamed ‘tadpole' because of his diminutive size, and his last name, ‘Ryerstad', was taken from a popular local beer brand.
Tad was bounced around various foster homes, until the age of twelve, where he ran away and raised himself on the streets. Tad developed a sociopathic, distorted worldview, from his loveless childhood combined with his absorption of pop culture and comic books. Tad fancied himself a hero.
From this bizarre childhood came a sociopath who strives to be a hero. At the age of eighteen, Tad took this one step further. Tad began his crusade by beating up and intimidating homeless people, street punks who were spraying graffiti, and other pushers and hustlers. Tad nearly killed a man he erroneously attacked because of a misjudgment based on the color of his skin.
Tad eventually met John Law, the mystery man once known as "the Tarantula" decades ago. Inspired by the Tarantula's adventures, Tad took it upon himself to become a costumed crime fighter. He searched hard to find just the right alias. Looking out his apartment window, he saw a grocery store with two flashing lights. One said, "Open All Nite" and the other "Hot Buffalo Wings." Using a baton made of a stainless steel rod he found in a junkyard, he dressed in a costume made of a hockey jersey with his name appliqued on it and a pair of camouflage pants. And so, Tad Ryerstad became Nite-Wing.
Nightwing eventually talked to the maladjusted hero and thought he could be a mentor to him. Nightwing was unaware of Tad's antisocial behavior at this time, not knowing that he is a powder keg getting ready to explode. Nightwing worked to curb Nite-Wing's violent methods. But this was not to be. Nite-Wing inadvertently killed an innocent man. ‘Cisco Blaine' was seemingly on Blockbuster's payroll. In truth, he was an undercover FBI Agent. Believing him a criminal threat, Nite-Wing beat him to death. Nightwing learned of this and discovered Tad was beyond his help.
Nightwing turned Tad over to the police. Tad vowed to get revenge on Nightwing, his former hero.
As luck would have it, his cell mate was Dudley Soames, also known as Torque. The two plotted and mounted an escape from prison - but Soames was killed during the jailbreak. Tad is still at large.
Tad uses a steel baton made from a stainless steel rod he found in a junkyard.
Outwardly, Tad appears to an honorable person. Underneath mask, NiteWing is full of murderous rage that he is venting toward criminals. Unfortunately, Tad's perception of who is a criminal and who is not is broader than that of most crime fighters.

After erstwhile Bludhaven vigilante "Nite-Wing" is riddled with bullets, Nightwing prevents assassins Brutale and Stallion, as well as scores of other eager killers, from collecting the contract on the life of the comatose Nite-Wing. First appearance of Tad as Nite-Wing in issue #21.

Amy Rohrbach was one of the very few honest cops in the utterly corrupt Bludhaven Police Force. Amy was partnered with Dick Grayson, who had recently joined the force. Unknown to Amy, Dick had become a cop in order to ferret out the corruption from within the system. Unknown to Dick, Amy was working with a handful of cops with the same mission.
Amy at first assumed Dick was as crooked as any other Bludhaven cop. But soon, she sensed that Dick may an honest policeman after all. It wasn't long before Dick met Amy's husband and her two children - and Amy began to trust the rookie cop. Soon, Dick was recruited by Amy into the secret cadre of Bludhaven cops working against the corrupt police department.
Finally, when Chief Redhorn was murdered, it all began to unravel. Nightwing was able to recover hard evidence from Redhorn's wife, Mary, who had kept incriminating journals detailing various indiscretions and double-dealings of the police force. The force was completely overhauled as the evidence was handed over to the feds - and Amy was promoted to Captain. Although Amy had worked closely with Nightwing, she still wasn't sure if she could completely trust the vigilante hero. But a bond was established between the cop and the crime-fighter; Amy even fashioned a "Nightwing signal" that shot across the Bludhaven sky.
When Amy and her family were targeted by the former corrupt cops, it was Nightwing that saved her life. But through an obvious shoulder injury, Amy was able to deduce that Nightwing and Dick Grayson were one and the same. Although she respected his intentions, Amy felt his actions as Nightwing interfered with his life as a policeman. Reluctantly, Amy forced Dick to turn in his badge.
After these events, Blockbuster was brutally murdered by the vigilante Tarantula as Nightwing watched. Although Amy is aware Nightwing was at the scene of the crime, she has protected him nonetheless. Officially, Amy has stated that Grayson was working undercover the whole time. Amy's trust in Dick Grayson runs deep - deep enough to compromise her own integrity in his behalf.
When Bludhaven was bombed by the radioactive creature known as Chemo during the Infinite Crisis, the city lay in waste. Luckily, Amy and her family survived the ravaged city with Nightwing's help.

Tarantula
Alias: Catalina Flores

Catalina Flores left the FBI to return to her native town of Bludhaven. Finding the city she once loved wallowing in corruption, Catalina wanted to do something to make a difference. She reconnected with her brother, Mateo, who had become the city's district attorney. Soon, she also met Jon Law, the former hero known as the Tarantula. Catalina had great respect for the Tarantula's crime-fighting career in the 1940s. Inspired by Law, Catalina decided to become a costumed vigilante as the second Tarantula.
Tarantula took to the skies of Bludhaven and met its most prominent vigilante hero, Nightwing. Tarantula sought Nightwing as a crime-fighting partner, but he refused. Nightwing was uncomfortable with Catalina's reckless methods and seeming disregard for the sanctity of life. Nightwing later discovered that Tarantula was responsible for the murder of corrupt Police Chief Redhorn. After Nightwing brought her to justice, she was freed thanks to strings pulled by her brother, Mateo. Following that, Bludhaven kingpin Blockbuster employed Tarantula to spy on Nightwing after discovering his dual identity.
Blockbuster's vengeance campaign escalated - as he targeted everyone Dick knew and loved. The criminal kingpin bombed Dick Grayson's apartment complex, killing most of its residents, including John Law. This prompted Tarantula to join Nightwing in bringing Blockbuster down. Nightwing reluctantly accepted Catalina's offer for help, also believing he could rehabilitate her.
Every attempt to bring in Blockbuster legally failed. Catalina, meanwhile, had absolutely no concept of remorse or morality. Despite her utter lack of moral understanding, Tarantula assisted Batman during the "War Games" disaster, as he remained ignorant of her involvement in Blockbuster's death.
Eventually, Nightwing emerged from his depression and took matters into his own hands. He gave Tarantula one chance to turn herself in. Feeling shocked, betrayed and confused, Tarantula attempted to flee. But Nightwing apprehended the vigilante and turned her into the Bludhaven Police. Completely unaware of the gravity of her actions, Tarantula undoubtedly feels betrayed by Nightwing.
Tarantula is an above-average fighter and skilled in martial arts. She also uses low-level poisons to temporarily paralyze her opponents. Tarantula is borderline psychopathic; She has absolutely no sense of the meaning of right and wrong.
Nightwing #71 [2002]: Catalina Flores arrives in Bludhaven.
Nightwing #75 [2002]: First appearance of Tarantula II. With the city's police department in chaos, street gangs try to assert themselves, making for a very long night for our hero. Added to the mix is a new rooftop vigilante with a familiar costume - Tarantula.
Nightwing #87-92 [2003-2004]: Blockbuster's vengeance campaign escalates as he wrongfully blames Nightwing for the death of his mother. The criminal kingpin bombs Dick Grayson's apartment complex, killing most of its residents, including Dick's Romanian grandfather. Tarantula becomes entangled with Blockbuster and then teams up with Nightwing.

Bludhaven
Built on the profits of the whaling industry, Bludhaven, some hundred miles to the south of Gotham, has never been a pretty place to live. The buildings were made shoddily, the factories pollute the rivers, and the corruption runs downriver from City Hall.
Coming here on the trail of a killer, Dick Grayson, otherwise known as Nightwing, thought he was doing a favor for Batman. Instead he found a cause. Cruising the rooftops, Nightwing has seen blocks filled with mountains of tires, buildings so shoddily built that they can't support their own weight, and huge automotive plants that have been abandoned for decades.
The city is run from behind the scenes by Blockbuster, a criminal mastermind who controls Police Chief Redhorn and other city officials by holding them in a grip of fear. Nothing gets done in Bludhaven without his notice, and in this city nothing gets done without a price. The citizens buy stolen material off the street without the merest thought of where it came from; nor do they care. This city will eat anyone alive.
Bludhaven has never been a pretty place to live...but Nightwing began to change all that. Nightwing ended Blockbuster's criminal strangehold over the city, and helped clean up its corrupt police force.
During the Infinite Crisis, the Society of Super Villains bombed Bludhaven with the radioactive creature known as Chemo. The city is now a ravaged wasteland.
