Geo-Force

Alias: Brion Markov

Meeting Batman and the Outsiders

Terra is reunited with her brother in NEW TEEN TITANS #37 [1983]
BATMAN & THE OUTSIDERS

Brion Markov first assumed the role of Geo-Force when his native country, Markovia, was invaded by the forces of the marauder Baron Bedlam. Brion's father, King Viktor, was killed in this conflict, and Brion's older brother, Gregor, ascended the throne of Markovia. In an attempt to save his country, Brion was instilled with his powers by the scientific discoveries of Dr. Helga Jace. Dr. Jace originally intended to give super-powers to both Brion and his older brother, Gregor, but Gregor openly scoffed at Dr. Jace's researches. During the invasion, Brion also encountered the costumed adventurers Batman, Metamorpho, Black Lightning, Katana, and Halo. After the invasion was repelled, Brion decided to travel to America to learn how to use his powers under the tutelage of the Batman. together he and the others made up the costumed super-team known as the Outsiders.

A benefit Brion had not counted on from his membership in the Outsiders was an increased ability to work as a member of a team. Born into the purple, Brion was used to having his way in nearly every life situation that did not include his family members: but the Batman gave Brion no special treatment, regarding him simply as another member of the team, subordinate to his wishes. This caused a great deal of friction between Batman and Geo-Force, until Bat-man earned Geo-Force's respect and trust. Geo-Force learned that he was expected to follow orders without being consulted as to his opinion.

A Sister's Betrayal

Meanwhile, Brion's half-sister, Tara, was secretly working with the mercenary Deathstroke to infiltrate the Teen Titans and learn their secrets. Changeling, who met Terra when she was attempting to destroy the Statue of Liberty, invited her to join the Titans. Gar quickly developed a crush on her, and Terra performed well with the group in order to perpetuate the lie. Terra was reunited, albeit briefly, with Geo-Force when the Titans teamed up with the Outsiders against the Fearsome Five. Shortly after, Terra betrayed the Titans and seemingly perished in a battle with the H.I.V.E. Terra's betrayal was never made public, and the superhero community believed she died a hero. Batman later disclosed Terra's crimes to her half--brother Geo-Force. Brion became so distraught that he changed his costume from the tan and brown arrangement which resembled Terra's to the current green and yellow Geo-Force suit.

Geo-Force meets the second Terra in
OUTSIDERS #17 [1995]

For a time, the Outsiders were privately funded by Markovia, whose treasury paid for and maintained a secret headquarters for the group off the coast of Santa Monica, California, after the Outsiders split with Batman. The public guise of this base was that of a marine research facility, co--funded by the United States and under the direction of Dr. Jace, whose initial researches opened the way for many important discoveries in various scientific disciplines.

However, it became public knowledge that Markovia was funding the Outsiders when their headquarters were destroyed by the super-criminal known as Major Disaster. At this point, the United States government withdrew any foreign aid from Markovia until that nation released the true names of the Outsiders. Before King Gregor could choose which course to take, he was mysteriously murdered. Brion assumed the throne as King of Markovia, but was forced to abdicate and was imprisoned when his sister-in-law, Ilona, revealed she was pregnant. (Under Markovian law, she became ruler of the country until her child came of legal age.) Then the Outsider known as Looker revealed to Brion that the murderer of his brother was actually Dr. Jace, who was serving her true masters, the Manhunters. Geo-Force and the Outsiders fought the Manhunters, then the Outsiders disbanded.

The Outsiders Live Again

Soon after, a vampire named Roderick captivated Queen Ilona and cast her under his thrall. Brion attended the christening of his nephew (and future king) as Roderick planned to wrest control of Markovia for himself. To this end, Roderick murdered the queen and framed Brion and the Outsiders for the crime. As the Outsiders were forced to become outlaws, Roderick assumed control of Markovia. Eventually, the Outsiders cleared their names and Roderick was destroyed in battle. This left Markovia back in the hands of the Markov family.

Still, misunderstandings and circumstances forced the Outsiders to remain outside the law.

Terra fears the truth behind her DNA test in
TITANS SECRET FILES #2 [2000]

Meanwhile, another Terra appeared, claiming to be a time-tossed adventurer from the future. She believed that she was an orphan girl injected with the original Terra's DNA and made to look like Terra with reconstructive surgery. Geo-Force met this ‘new Terra' wanting desperately to believe this new heroic girl was his sister, somehow back from the dead. Terra II assured him this was not the case.

After Terra's meeting with Brion, a mysterious orb from the Time Trapper cast dispersions on Terra II's genesis; The Time Trapper revealed that this new Terra was indeed from this timeline. Terra II also unearthed the original Terra's coffin to find it empty.

Settling Down in Markovia

Brion and the Outsiders cleared their names once again, and Brion was free to wed his long-time sweetheart, Denise Howard. Shortly after this, Brion invited Terra II to live in Markovia. Since the Titans group at the time was disbanding, Terra took Brion up on his offer.

While staying in Markovia, Terra II had the Markovian scientists conduct a DNA test to discover, beyond a shadow of a doubt, if she was the original Terra. Terra II was frightened at the prospect that she could be this psychotic traitor. Her ‘brother', Brion, received the test results. He mercifully told Terra that the results are negative. As Terra left, Brion looked at the results: the DNA test was positive. At the present time, Geo-Force is the only one aware of this information.

A Hero Falls

With the murders of Black Adam's innocent wife, Isis, and her brother, Osiris, The Black Marvel Family was destroyed. Seeking vengeance for those responsible, Black Adam cut a swath of destruction across the globe, igniting a world war. In an attempt to stop Black Adam, Beast Boy and his rag-tag Titans team fought valiantly to contain his rampage. The battle had a terrible cost; Terra lost her life to Black Adam's fury. In the end, Terra proved she was nothing like the first Terra. She was a true hero.

After mourning his sister, Geo-Force manifested earth-manipulating powers identical to Terra's. The reasons for these new abilities remain a mystery - for now.

Geo-Force's abilities include the power to increase or reduce the force of gravity, the power to project bursts of heat (called "lava blasts"), immense strength, heightened resistance, and increased endurance. By lessening the force of gravity on his body and propelling himself with a lava blast, Geo-Force can fly.

Dr. Helga Jace

Dr. Helga Jace was a brilliant scientist who loyally served her country, Markovia. Jace worked as a research scientist for her homeland, and became close to the Royal Markov Family.

Jace specialized in studying meta-humans, and worked on various processes to grant super-powers to normal humans. Two children – Selinda and Baran – were brought to Dr. Jace. Both of them possessed superhuman powers that set them apart from their schoolmates, who teased them mercilessly for being different. When the frustrated siblings used their powers against the local children, enraged arid fearful adults tried to drive Selinda and Baran's entire family out of town. As a compromise, the children's father brought his two children to the renowned Markovian scientist Dr. Helga Jace. Jace helped the siblings understand and expand their powers, while' trying to instill a sense of morality in the two teenagers. Nevertheless, Selinda and Baran turned to crime and established criminal records as Shimmer and Mammoth (and later joined the Fearsome Five).

Jace continued her research and developed a process that would harness powers from the earth itself and bestow these powers to a normal human. Tara Markov , the illegitimate daughter of the King of Markovia, used this process to grant herself powers when Jace's research was still in the developmental stage. Tara left Markovia and embarked on her own.

Jace continued to perfect her research, as Markovia, was invaded by the forces of the marauder Baron Bedlam. King Viktor was killed in this conflict, and Prince Brion's older brother, Gregor, ascended the throne of Markovia. In an attempt to save his country, Brion was instilled with his powers by the scientific discoveries of Dr. Helga Jace. After the invasion was repelled, Brion decided to travel to America to learn how to use his powers under the tutelage of the Batman. together he and the others made up the costumed super-team known as the Outsiders.

Dr. Jace remained in Markovia to serve her country. Soon after, the Fearsome Five kidnapped Jace and forced her to use her research findings to create an army or earthen soldiers. The kidnapping triggered a signal which was sent to Tara Markov (Terra of the Teen Titans) and Brion Markov (Geo-Force of Batman and the Outsiders). Both the Titans and the Outsiders convened, and Brion was reunited with his sister, Tara. As the Titans and Outsiders joined forces, they defeated the Fearsome Five and rescued Dr. Jace, who returned to Markovia.

For a time, the Outsiders were privately funded by Markovia, whose treasury paid for and maintained a secret headquarters for the group off the coast of Santa Monica, California, after the Outsiders split with Batman. Then the Outsider known as Looker revealed to Brion that the murderer of his brother was actually Dr. Jace, who was serving her true masters, the Manhunters. With android sleeper agents posing as friend or family to Earth's heroes, the Manhunters attacked, threatening the evolution of humanity. After Jace was exposed as a Manhunter agent, she attempted to destroy the Outsiders with a bomb. The Outsiders escaped and Jace herself was destroyed in the explosion.

Markovia

Markovia is a small Eastern European country, neighboring France, Belgium and Luxembourg. Markovia has been a monarchy for over 200 years, led by the Royal Markov family.

During World War II, Markovia was invaded by the Nazis, who usurped King Viktor Markov and appointed their own regent (the father of the man who would later become Baran Bedlam). Eventually, the Allied forces liberated Markovia and restored King Viktor to the throne. Bedlam's father was hanged by the Markovian people.

Years later, Markovia, was invaded by the forces of the marauder Baron Bedlam. Brion's father, King Viktor, was killed in this conflict, and Brion's older brother, Gregor, ascended the throne of Markovia. In an attempt to save his country, Brion was instilled with his powers by the scientific discoveries of Dr. Helga Jace. During the invasion, Brion also encountered the costumed adventurers Batman, Metamorpho, Black Lightning, Katana, and Halo. With their combined forces, the invasion was repelled.

Bedlam returned later and attempted to usurp control of the throne, but was thwarted by the Outsiders.

For a time, the Outsiders were privately funded by Markovia, whose treasury paid for and maintained a secret headquarters for the group off the coast of Santa Monica, California, after the Outsiders split with Batman. However, it became public knowledge that Markovia was funding the Outsiders when their headquarters were destroyed by the super-criminal known as Major Disaster.
