THE FEARSOME FIVE
THE REVAMPED FEARSOME FIVE

Fearsome Five

The Fearsome Five was a group put together by Doctor Light when he placed an ad in the Underworld Star, a criminal underground paper. The charter members were: Dr. Light, Gizmo, Shimmer, Mammoth and Psimon, the latter taking over leadership from Dr. Light during their first encounter with the Titans. Jinx and Neutron were later initiated into the group.

The Fearsome Five later encountered Superman, with a new lineup: Mammoth, Gizmo, Shimmer, Charger, and Deuce.

The team disbanded once again shortly after that. Sometime later, Psimon returned from certain death and systematically sought revenge on his former teammates: Gizmo, Mammoth and Shimmer. Mammoth barely survived although his sister Shimmer seemingly perished. Gizmo later resurfaced alive. Dr. Sivana gathered the team - Psimon, Mammoth Gizmo and Jinx - and was able to successfully restore Shimmer to life. The revamped Fearsome Five is a deadly team, if they can keep from killing each other!

Dr. Light

Alias: Arthur Light

Humble Beginnings

Dr. Arthur Light and Dr. Jacob Finlay both young scientists in the S.T.A.R. Labs Light Technology Department, were an inseparable pair. Jacob, far more than Arthur, was extremely protective of their research and insisted that it be used in the cause of good and morality. Unbeknownst to Jacob, Arthur had been illegally selling other S.T.A.R. secrets to a powerful corporate raider. One night, Arthur was caught pilfering further lab technology by a new superhero who called himself Dr. Light. Dr. Light tried to capture Arthur - and then, once he got a clear look at Arthur's face seemed to recognize him and mysteriously set him free.

Reflecting on the incident later that night, Arthur realized that Jacob was Dr. Light and that he had been helping himself to their technology in order to create a superhero Identity. Knowing Jacob's secret made Arthur even more reluctant to fulfill the new request of his corporate benefactor - who demanded that Arthur find and turn over the secret of Dr. Light's powers.

The next morning, in the shambles of the lab tom apart during his battle with Dr. Light, Arthur began to confront Jacob about their mutual situations when an electrical short in their equipment caused a laser to lash out toward Jacob, disintegrating him in a blinding flash. Arthur assumed that Jacob would no longer be a part of his life - an assumption that turned out to be anything but true when Jacob's ghost began haunting Arthur whenever the lights went out, blaming Arthur for his death. Arthur continued to be terrorized by the vengeful spirit of his former friend until he accidentally came across Jacob's Dr. Light outfit, hidden in the lab. In a panic, Arthur used its light-ray beams against Jacob's ghost. He immediately discovered that light, in any form, was his one defense against the spirit, and Arthur took the costume and weaponry for his own protection.

As Dr. Light, Arthur became intoxicated with his newfound power and decided to use it for personal gain. He knew that his criminal career would eventually bring him into conflict with the newly formed Justice League of America, so Light set a trap that first immobilized the League members, then transported each of them into another dimension. Unfortunately for Light, his opponents eventually made their way back to Earth and took Light into custody.

That first case against the Justice League would be the closest Light would ever come to a victory against any adversary; after his initial defeat by the entire League, he systematically went after individual super-heroes, again finding himself unable to beat any one of them.

Messing With His Mind

DR. LIGHT

One fateful evening, Dr. Light was able to infiltrate the Justice League's satellite headquarters. The only person at the headquarters happened to be Elongated Man's wife, Sue Dibny. Dr. Light brutally attacked Sue until the League arrived and subdued him.

Fearing what Dr. Light may do in the future, the League pondered what actions to take. In the wake of the death of Flash's wife, there was an increased concern for the loved ones of Justice League members. Zatanna, Hawkman, Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Black Canary and Elongated Man voted - and Dr. Light's sentence was decided; Zatanna used her magics to tamper with Light's mind to help correct his aberrant behavior. But Zatanna's spell didn't work quite right... and Dr. Light received a partial lobotomy at the hands of the Justice League.

The event was kept secret by the League members. But Dr. Light tried to continue his criminal career - and his brain addled attempts were met with failure time after time.

And then came Titans...

After Titans' mentor Mr. Jupiter had closed down his training program, Mal Duncan had been left in charge of the Teen Titans base and equipment. The members received an emergency signal which rallied Robin, Kid Flash, Wonder Girl, Speedy, and Mal to their former headquarters. This turned out to be a trap set by Dr. Light, who intended to use the Titans as bait to trap the Justice League. Together, the revived Titans defeated Dr. Light and stopped his plan to take over the JLA satellite.

Dr. Light became obsessed with creating a name for himself among the underworld. Whereas the adult JLA proved too powerful, Light believed he could defeat the younger, less experienced Teen Titans - with the right help.

The Fearsome Five would return to battle the Titans, and Dr. Light was always in a power struggle for leadership over the group. Light eventually fled the Fearsome Five in fear for his life.

Dead & Reborn

Dr. Light confronts Red Star in TEEN TITANS (third series) #23 [2005].

Dr. Light was later recruited by the Suicide Squad for a number of missions. What he kept secret from his teammates was that the ghost of Jacob had been plaguing him more and more; on his final mission, Jacob goaded Light into declaring himself a full-fledged super-hero, then watched in glee as Light was cut down try dozens of ray gun-wielding soldiers on Apokolips.

Thought dead, Dr. Light later resurfaced. He returned to his criminal ways with no more success than he had previously enjoyed. Eventually Light's powers turned on him when he became trapped within the power battery of the Green Lantern Hal Jordan. After residing in the lantern for over a year, he was freed, only to find that he was now partially constructed of light. He has since encountered Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner) and resurfaced as a member of Alex Luther's Injustice Gang, but as before, when the scheme began falling apart, Light fled.

Lights Out

When Sue Dibny was brutally murdered, Dr. Light became a prime suspect. During the course of the investigation, Dr. Light learned the Justice League had tampered with his mind. The enraged criminal sought revenge on the costumed heroes he had fought through the years. Dr, Light - more dangerous than ever - embraced his true, vicious nature and took particular satisfaction in terrorizing his female prey.

With the threat of a Final Crisis looming, Crispus Allen embraced his role as The Spectre by exacting God's vengeance on some of the DC Universe's most vile sinners. To that end, Spectre hunted down Dr. Light and killed him by burning the sadistic rapist alive.

As a hand-to-hand combatant, Dr. Light couldn't beat an egg; but as a brilliant theoretician and technician, Light created countless highly advanced weapons based on the various properties of light. For example, he could create convincing illusions with it, solidify it, and even warp space and dimensions with it. Originally using hand weapons, Light soon incorporated most of these devices into his costume.

Psimon

Alias: Dr. Simon Jones

Psimon Says

Psimon attacks Arsenal's Titans team in
NEW TITANS #116-117 [1994]

Dr. Simon Jones was working on interdimensional experiments when he met Trigon the Terrible, Raven's demonic father. The demon changed Jones into the villain known as Psimon and gave the transformed scientist a mission: destroy the world. When Psimon read the classified ad in the Underworld Star, he saw the perfect chance to form a team and fulfill this mission.

Biding his time, Psimon tolerated the buffoonish Dr. Light's leadership, then finally seized power, taking over the reins as head of the Fearsome Five. Psimon was arrogant, power-hungry and smug in his powers. He was an excellent tactician who spoke with grandiose verbiage. He did not always kill his victims, preferring to instill his opponents with fear of himself and his mental powers.

Psimon eventually became part of the Monitor's advance team during the Crisis. Psimon was betrayed and murdered by his villainous cohorts at this time.

Psimon Returns

Psimon was able to survive the experience, and resurfaced much later. He cut a swath of destruction through a star system, devastating the planets of Kallas and Talyn (home of Jarras Minion). Eventually, Psimon returned to earth, where he sought for revenge against all those who wronged him, including his former teammates.

To that end, Psimon viciously attacked Mammoth, Shimmer and Gizmo, attempting to kill them all. Psimon savagely attacked the Mammoth and Shimmer - driving a spear through Baran's head. He then transformed Selinda into glass and shattered her. Next was Gizmo: Psimon used his powers to continually shrink Gizmo - until he reached the subatomic level.

Psimon then attacked the Titans, and psychologically tortured each of them, while also unwittingly unlocking new abilities in the Titan, Mirage. Jarras Minion arrived on earth on a mission of vengeance. Minion intended to kill Psimon, who destroyed his planet. With Mirage's new abilities and the arrival of Minion, the Titans were able to contain Psimon. The dangerous villain was placed under custody of the Darkstars.

The Great Escape

Sometime later, Psimon was remanded to the Slab, a super-high-tech prison which hosted a variety of super-powered inmates. When Brother Blood attempted to activate a global satellite-activation system, Psimon used the opportunity to initiate a major prison breakout at the Slab. Psimon, along with hundreds of other inmates, escaped while Nightwing and the Outsiders were preoccupied with Brother Blood's plan.

Sometime later, Dr. Sivana organized a revamped Fearsome Five team comprised of Psimon, Jinx, Gizmo, Mammoth, and a newly-restored Shimmer. The team is a deadly combination as long as they can ignore their personal grudges for one another.

Psimon possessed telepathic and telekinetic powers of an extraordinary nature, and was able to control virtually any mind, regardless of its strength, and to telepathically command a person to die. He could also lift mid move objects solely through the use of wall power. The true limits of Psimon's abilities were never charted, but considering has powers were a gift from the omnipotent Trigon, it as assumed that they were virtually limitless.

Mammoth is Immeasurably strong and is partially Invulnerable. He appears quicker than his considerable bulk would Imply but lacks any developed skill as a hand-hand combatant. Also, Baran is emotionally underdeveloped and had a very strong attachment to his sister.

Gizmo

Alias: Mikron O'Jeneus

GIZMO, MAMMOTH & SHIMMER

Gizmo answered an ad placed by the criminal Dr. Light and joined his new criminal organization, the Fearsome Five. His first case with the Five brought him into conflict with the New Teen Titans, who eventually imprisoned them all, again and again. Unlike some of the other members, Gizmo was more concerned with acquiring wealth than power. The diminutive inventor also owned his own corporation, "Gizmos, Inc.," which supplied machinery to many well-known, if not exactly legal, business operations.

One day, he teamed up with Trident and Disruptor to help Wildebeest kidnap Mother Mayhem, who was pregnant with the former Brother Blood's child. During this clash with the Titans, Gizmo had a change of heart and sided with the heroes, citing a desire to go straight. He eventually secured a job at S.T.A.R. Labs.

His new life would soon be shattered by the return of his teammate, Psimon, who sought revenge against all those who wronged him - including his former teammates. Psimon used his powers to continually shrink Gizmo - until he reached the subatomic level. It appeared Gizmo's fate was sealed.

But the diminutive genius apparently found a way out of Psimon's trap. He resurfaced later and returned to his life of crime. Gizmo was known to team up with his former teammate, Mammoth.

Sometime later, Dr. Sivana organized a revamped Fearsome Five team comprised of Psimon, Jinx, Gizmo, Mammoth, and a newly-restored Shimmer. The team boasted a deadly combination as long as they could ignore their personal grudges for one another.

When Dr. Sivana doubted the group's loyalties, he shot Gizmo dead as a warning to the other members. Even though he was stone cold dead, Gizmo was reanimated by the geniuses at Manitech Research & Development, a technology company located in Platinum Flats. Gizmo disposed of their C.E.O and earned his seat on the Silicon Syndicate, a sinister group of high-tech criminals. Gizmo retained most of his brain function, but is still missing his eye and is partially decomposed.

Gizmo is capable of creating unbelievable weaponry by transforming one machine into another. In his tiny hands, using state-of-the-art technology, an ordinary vacuum cleaner, for example, can easily be converted into a deadly, unstoppable tank.

New Teen Titans #3 [1981]: Dr. Light forms the Fearsome Five in order to attack the Titans again; Fearsome Five member Psimon, under Trigon's subtle influence, takes over leadership from Dr. Light, and the villains defeat the Titans; Psimon plants a compulsion in the heroes' minds to destroy the JLA. First appearance of Fearsome Five; First appearance of Gizmo, Mammoth, Shimmer and Psimon.

Jinx

Alias: unknown

JINX

There were only four other acolytes in Jinx's Eastern Indian temple, and none more powerful than she. Soon, there was only one, for the dark powers she harnessed allowed her to destroy the others, and her master. Jinx was eventually captured by the authorities and sent to the U.S., which had facilities adequate enough to hold super-powered villains.

Jinx was turned over to S.T.A.R. Labs in New York, where the Fearsome Five freed her. Jinx joined this new version of the villainous super-group. The Fearsome Five held New York hostage, until the intervention of the Titans, who engaged them in battle and defeated them.

Later, Jinx was inducted as a member of Villainy, Inc. - a group of criminals gathered by the Atlantean queen Clea. Clea stole the Trident of Poseidon and used it to tear a dimensional hole into the world of Skartaris. There, Clea and her new Villainy Inc. - gathered because of their unique powers - were able to use those special abilities to vanquish Travis Morgan, the Warlord, and his sorceress daughter Jennifer, and seize control of the ancient city of Shamballah. Wonder Woman followed Villainy Inc. to Skartaris with the hope of leading its people against Villainy Inc. and liberating them from Clea's tyranny.

But Villainy Inc. member Trinity, a living computer virus created by the Atlantians a millennia ago, had downloaded itself into the master computer controlling all of Skartaris, hoping to "rewind" time and "reset" the dimension... until Wonder Woman destroyed it with the mythic trident of Poseidon.

Sometime later, Dr. Sivana organized a revamped Fearsome Five team comprised of Psimon, Jinx, Gizmo, Mammoth, and a newly-restored Shimmer. The team is a deadly combination as long as they can ignore their personal grudges for one another.

Jinx is an awesome elemental sorceress whose abilities include (but aren't limited to): mystical force bolts, ability to dissolve matter, and create green flames and earth tremors. Jinx's abilities are tied to elemental forces and her powers are limited by her contact with the ground at her feet.

NEUTRON

But prolonged exposure turned him into a walking nuclear bomb!

Tryon adopted the name Neutron, and continued his life of crime. Eventually, he battled Superman and was captured.

Neutron was turned over to S.T.A.R. Labs in New York, where the Fearsome Five freed him. Neutron joined this new version of the villainous super-group. The Fearsome Five also recruited the sorceress Jinx to their cause, but were unable to release Neutron from his confining radiation-proof capsule without aid - so they abducted abduct Dr. Jenet Klyburn to help them free Neutron - which drew the Titans into the conflict. Sabbac

Alias: Ishmael Gregor

Sabbac enjoys his new form in OUTSIDERS #9 [2004].

Ishmael Greagor was born in Russia approximately 40 years ago; The specifics of his early years are unknown, even to him. His grandmother, Anatalia, was rumored to have dabbled in the occult. It was Anatalia that raised a young Gregor to adulthood. Even at a young age, Gregor's path seemed clear. By age 12, he had already established himself as a hired killer. At age 16, he was hiring others to kill for him. And by age 20, Gregor was the head of one of Moskow's most feared organized crime clans.

At age 25, Gregor came to the United States, where it took him less that three years to become a captain in the Russian mob. Soon running the New York Russian mob, Ishmael sought even greater power. He started dabbling in the occult himself, seeking to summon untold power. Eventually, Ishmael learned of the power of Sabbac weilded by Timothy Barnes. By speaking "Sabbac," Barnes was able to summon the power of six demon lords.

Gregor freed Barnes from imprisonment in the Slab. The Russian mobster tricked Barnes into summoning Sabbac, only to steal the demonic channeling powers for himself. Once Ishmael had the power he long craved, he murdered Timothy Barnes without a thought.

The Outsiders tried to stop Gregor from seizing the Sabbac power, but they arrived moments too late. The timely arrival of Captain Marvel Jr. turned the tide and helped contain Sabbac's wanton destruction.

Sabbac later joined the Fearsome Five to free the imprisoned Mammoth at the request of Dr. Sivana. In exchange, Sabbac was able to ensnare the Seven Deadly Sins and control them. Now a greater demonic force, Sabbac unleashed havoc on Alcatraz Island. It took the combined forces of the Outsiders and Katana to stop Sabbac; Once the Seven Deadly Sins left him, Katana used her mystical sword to trap Sabbac's essence within her blade.

An empowerment spell is triggered when the bearer of the Sabbac power utters the word, "Sabbac!" Immediately upon uttering the magic word, "Sabbac", the bearer feels the zap of a bolt of black lightning. He now has the powers of his benefactors: Satan’s strength, Any’s invulnerability, Belial’s wisdom, Beelzebub’s flames, Asmodeus’s courage, and Craeteis’ power of flight. Gregor, afraid of losing the Sabbac power, refuses to utter the magic word "Sabbac!" to transform back into a normal human. Instead, the Russian mobster retains his demonic appearance 24/7.

Outsiders #8-10 [2004] : The Outsiders face off against Ishmael Gregor, who has claimed the power of Sabbac.
Outsiders #29-30 [2005] : Sabbac joins the Fearsome Five and ensnares the seven deadly sins.
