Wintergreen’s Family Journals
Long before serving as Deathstroke’s faithful valet and confidante, William Randolph Wintergreen grew up in Oxford, England. The depression that was brought about by Der Fuhrer seemed to affect everyone except the Wintergreens, who lived in relative luxury. As a child, William avoided sports and squirreled himself away in the University library, which was open to him due to his father’s title. Research came easy to him, and knowing the conduits through which information flowed later aided him in his work with MI-5 and the British Army.
At eight years old, young William learned his life of luxury was paid for in blood when he spied his father selling secrets to the Nazis. Meanwhile, his mother suffered from depression, which was brought about by her husband's daliances with other women. These betrayals caused William to run away at age sixteen, leaving his family behind him. Lord William Overton, a family friend, used his authority to suppress the Wintergreen family scandals. Overton even became a father figure to Wintergreen, guiding him into the S.A.S. and nursing his initial ineptitude. That enabled Wintergreen to join the British Army and left the Wintergreen family name untarnished by treason.
Journal Entry: Slade Wilson
The Army allowed Wintergreen a stable life. It also introduced him to Slade Wilson, who would become his closest friend. Slade Wilson possessed a strict moral code that never wavered. And despite the fact that Wintergreen was his elder by several years, Slade became the mentor and Wintergreen, the student.
When a vendetta-fueled General Sampson sent Slade Wilson on a suicide mission, Wintergreen disobeyed Sampson's orders and charged in to rescue his friend. Sampson was only given a minor reprimand for his rash actions, but wouldn’t soon forget Wintergreen's disobedience under his command. Slade later met and fell in love with Adeline Kane, his instructor in a special training program at Camp Washington. Wintergreen was reassigned closer to Slade at that time, which enabled him to serve as best man when Slade finally wed Adeline.

TALES OF THE TEEN TITANS #44 [1984]. |

Wintergreen later came under the command of General Sampson once again, who remembered the slight of years ago, and sent Wintergreen on a suicide mission. Shortly afterward, Slade received word that Wintergreen was captured as a prisoner of war. Disobeying orders, Slade commandeered a plane and made his way to Hanoi, determined to liberate Wintergreen. Badly beaten and tortured, Wintergreen awoke to witness his rescuer – a costumed man who easily bested all the soldiers with an unrivaled ferocity. The mystery assailant unmasked himself, revealing himself to Wintergreen as Slade Wilson.
Slade divulged to Wintergreen that his senses and abilities had been enhanced by a specially designed serum developed by the government. Due to his reckless mission, Slade was discharged for disobeying orders. Wintergreen felt he owed his life to Slade – and it was a debt he intended to repay.
Following this, Slade secretly became the mercenary known as Deathstroke, the Terminator. But a botched assignment led to the near-death of his his son, Joseph. Slade saved Joseph’s life, but at a cost; His throat was slit, rendering the boy mute. Adeline was so furious with her husband that she nearly killed him herself. Due to his quick reflexes, the almost-fatal shot claimed his right eye instead. But the emotional damage was irreparable; Adeline divorced Slade and raised their two sons by herself.
Feeling he still owed Slade a great debt, Wintergreen took Addie's place at his side, in an effort to prevent Slade from becoming nothing more than a cold and ruthless mercenary. Ever a scholar, Wintergreen began cataloguing Slade's adventures in his journals. And in the following years, he served as Slade's right hand man, acting alternately as his moral conscience, comrade in arms and nursemaid.
Journal Entry: The Judas Contract
After Slade's son Grant died as the first Ravager, Deathstroke aimed to fulfill the contract his son had left. Determined to deliver the Teen Titans to the H.I.V.E., Slade allied himself with a fifteen year old sociopath with earth powers named Tara Markov. As Terra, Markov infiltrated the Teen Titans and betrayed their secrets, giving Deathstroke all the information he needed to take them down, one by one.
Wintergreen feared Slade’s alliance with the unstable Terra would prove his undoing. Ultimately, this was proven true, as Terra’s own rage consumed her and nearly killed them all. Slade was arrested and stood trial, but the case was thrown out of court because the prosecutor failed to prove that the Terminator who did the kidnapping was indeed Slade Wilson.
Embracing his second chance, Slade took up hunting in Africa for a brief time with Wintergreen back at his side. Slade also grew to accept the fact that his son Joseph, as Jericho, was now a member of the Teen Titans himself.

Wintergreen vows to protect Rose Wilson
in DEATHSTROKE #46 [1995]. |
|
Deathstroke came out of his self-imposed retirement to assist the Titans when half their members were kidnapped by Wildebeest agents. Shockingly, it was Jericho himself that had engineered the plan, now possessed by evil Azarathian souls. This forced Slade to slay his own son, an act which left him deeply troubled. Unknown to anyone, Jericho's corrupted spirit had taken refuge deep within Deathstroke's body.
Eventually, Deathstroke returned to his mercenary ways, only with a stronger code of ethics. He even assisted the Titans on a number of missions, as Wintergreen continued to catalog his adventures.
Journal Entry: Deathstroke Chronicles
Wintergreen aided Deathstroke on a mission to rescue his old family friend, Lord William Overton. At that time, Wintergreen was shocked to learn that Overton was being hunted by the Israelis due to his work with the Nazis. Just like his own father, Overton too was also a Nazi sympathizer. This revelation sickened Wintergreen, having deeply admired Overton in his youth. Wintergreen and Slade brought Overton in to stand trial, but he suffered a fatal heart attack before he was arrested. After this encounter, Wintergreen visited his mother, who suffered a mental breakdown years ago and was staying at Carfax Sanitarium outside of Essex.

Wintergreen petitions to adopt Rose Wilson
in DEATHSTROKE #46 [1995]. |
|
Wintergreen soon discovered Deathstroke had fathered a daughter named Rose with his former lover, Lillian “Sweet Lili” Worth. Meanwhile, Slade Wilson’s murderous half-brother, Wade DeFarge, co-opted the Ravager identity and began to hunt Slade's friends and loved ones. Ravager abducted Rose Worth when he discovered her connection to Slade. As DeFarge tortured Rose, he also revealed to her that Slade Wilson was her father.
Wintergreen and Lili launched a rescue attempt to extract Rose from DeFarge’s captivity. Eventually, Lili and Wintergreen reached their quarry in the snow-covered wilderness. To save her daughter, Lili attempted to run over Ravager – causing her jeep to careen off a cliff and explode. Lili was presumed dead, but her body was never recovered. Reunited with his estranged daughter, Slade feared he would not be a good father. He left Rose primarily in the care of Wintergreen, who was prepared to adopt the girl himself. But before that could happen, Slade placed Rose in the protective custody of the Titans through Sarge Steel.
Deathstroke's own regenerative powers were more heightened than ever, and yielded a strange reaction when the mercenary was engulfed in an explosion at the Capital Dome. Slade Wilson awoke, now regenerated twenty years younger with no memory of his former life. This led him to cut ties with both Pat Trayce and longtime friend, Wintergreen. With Slade gone, Pat Trayce recruited Wintergreen to work for her own search and rescue operation known as Vigilance.
Slade's regenerative abilities later sudsided, and he reverted to his true age with all memories intact. And eventually, Wintergreen returned to his side.
Final Journal Entry
Sometime later, Deathstroke discovered the spirit of his son, Jericho, had actually survived and taken refuge deep inside his body. With the help of Wintergreen, Deathstroke attempted to exorcise his son from him, but was quickly overpowered. Jericho murdered Wintergreen and embarked on a hunt for the newly-formed Teen Titans. Jericho - in possession of Deathstroke's body - mounted Wintergreen's severed head as he vowed "Deathstroke hunts alone."
Slade would forever be haunted by Wintergreen's dying words: "I suppose it was only a matter of time."

Addie meets Slade... and sparks fly, as related in
TALES OF THE TEEN TITANS #44 [1984]. |

Reckless Youth
The Kane family wealth was built by the fortunes gathered by M. Josiah Kane, who was born in 1794. Each ancestor enjoyed the spoils of his wealth, rearing new generations of Kane children in Josiah’s original manor in London, England.
Growing up affluent, Adeline became a playgirl, squandering her almost limitless wealth with the rest of the useless jet set society. At age nineteen, Adeline met the charming Count Tavolara in Monaco. After a whirlwind courtship of six weeks, the young lovers wed.
Unknown to Adeline, the Count was not a Count at all. His real name was Jacques Morel and he made his money selling drugs and underage girls. He even began selling state secrets concerning a nuclear submarine program, which was something the French authorities would not abide. Jacques Morel and Adeline fled France, as Morel abandoned his various business interests. He then became violent and abusive toward Adeline, which caused her to uncover his true activities. Adeline filed for an annulment and called the police to arrest him. Morel escaped capture when the Mafia sent him to manage their drug business in the Far East.
At this point, Adeline decided to cast away her undisciplined youth and make something of her life. Her father had taught her everything he learned while working as a liaison for communist guerrilla fighters during World War II. In turn, Adeline served in the U.S. Army as an instructor in a special training program at Camp Washington.
Adeline had a brief relationship with Wade DeFarge, a troubled young man with anger issues. Although the two parted ways, Wade remained bitter over the break-up for years. Unknown to Adeline, Wade was actually the half-brother to Slade Wilson, the man she would marry four years later.
Sparks Fly

Joseph is tragically maimed, as retold by Adeline
in
TALES OF THE TEEN TITANS #44 [1984]. |
|
|
When Slade Wilson arrived for training at Camp Washington, Adeline was both frightened and fascinated by him. Already decorated as a war hero, Wilson was an army legend before he joined the camp. Despite his background, Adeline took Slade down a few pegs by besting him during a guerilla warfare training session. Beguiled by Adeline's beauty and brains, Slade soon became her eager new student, as she passed along her fighting techniques. In truth, their mutual interest in one another was more than professional. Sparks ignited immediately between the two, and they quickly fell in love and wed within six months.
As Slade was called into service, Adeline gave birth to a son, Grant. Slade continued on active duty, and volunteered for a medical experiment in resisting truth serums. The experiment had an unforeseen side effect: it gave Slade enhanced strength and heightened reflexes. Shortly after this, Adeline gave birth to a second son, Joseph William Wilson.
Weeks later, Slade launched a rogue rescue mission to rescue his best friend, Major William Randolph Wintergreen. Badly beaten and tortured, Wintergreen awoke to witness his rescuer – a costumed man who easily bested all the soldiers with an unrivaled ferocity. The mystery assailant unmasked himself, revealing himself to Wintergreen as Slade Wilson.
Slade soon was discharged from the army. He took up hunting for awhile, but it failed to quench his thirst for the life he once led. To the world, Slade Wilson became a celebrated hunter. Unknown to even his wife and family, Slade secretly became a mercenary known as Deathstroke, the Terminator. Although Slade was gone for weeks a time, he was a good father. He was closest to Grant, who idolized him. But Slade also loved Joseph, who preferred music over fighting and painting over guns.
One one of his assignments, Slade assassinated a Colonel from the country of Quarac. The president from Quarac sent a terrorist known as the Jackal to find Slade, and find out who hired him to kill the Colonel. To gain leverage, the Jackal kidnapped a young Joseph Wilson.
This forced Slade to admit to his Adeline that he was secretly the mercenary known as Deathstroke, the Terminator. Adeline and Deathstroke together confronted the Jackal in an alleyway in Tangiers. Slade refused to give the Jackal the information he requested, because it would violate his professional code of ethics. Slade gambled he could react fast enough to save his son; He saved Joseph's life, but not before one of Jackal's men had begun to slit his throat. Joseph was now mute. Slade always needed to be the best. But now, his own son suffered for his monumental ego.
Adeline was so furious with her husband that she nearly killed him herself. Due to his quick reflexes, the almost-fatal gunshot claimed his right eye instead. But the emotional damage was irreparable; Adeline divorced Slade and raised their two sons by herself. Grant followed in his father's footsteps and attended military school. Joseph, however, was quite different from his brother; He was a kind, gentle soul who flourished in the arts. Joseph was both a talented artist and musician. Adeline nurtured this side of Joseph, and he grew up to be a fine young man under Adeline's care.

TALES OF THE TEEN TITANS #44 [1984]. |
|
Sometime after her divorce from Slade, Adeline established her own organization, Searchers, Inc. a worldwide information network that passed itself off as a detective agency. As he grew older, Joseph worked closely with his mother, receiving combat and tactical training from her.
Searchers, Inc. provided espionage services for a number of clients. On a mission for the U.S. government, Joseph and his mother separated briefly for reconnaissance. Joseph spotted his mother in danger from an assassin she did not see. Joseph wanted to scream, but couldn't. The assassin laughed and prepared to fire at Adeline. Joseph intensely stared at him across the room, desperately wanting to stop him. It was at this moment that his mutant power manifested. Joseph felt his bodies separate and enter into the assassin, controlling the man's motor skills. Adeline deduced that her son's D.N.A. was mutated due to the biological experimentation that had been done on Slade Wilson. As a side effect, it gifted Joseph with amazing super-human abilities.
Adeline's other son, Grant, had taken a darker path. The bitter young man petitioned the H.I.V.E. to give him superhuman powers in an effort to retaliate against the Teen Titans, for an imagined slight against him. Grant's vendetta led to ruin, as his contract with the H.I.V.E. led to his own death, with his father left to mourn him.
|
| Jericho joins the Teen Titans in TALES OF THE TEEN TITANS #44 [1984]. |
|
Adeline soon learned that Deathstroke has co-opted Grant Wilson's contract to kill the Titans. With the help of Terra, Slade had finally fulfilled the H.I.V.E. contract to deliver the Titans into their hands. Adeline and Joseph surveyed Slade's activities, and approached Dick Grayson, offering to help rescue the captured Titans. At this time, Joseph first adopted the name Jericho, and fashioned a costume for himself. Nightwing and Jericho successfully freed the kidnapped Titans and brought Slade Wilson to justice. Adeline was quite pleased with herself, as it was her hidden agenda to place Joseph in the Teen Titans.
Eventually, Slade Wilson stood trial and re-examined his life. He developed a stricter code of ethics and even became an ally to the Titans on occasion. Addie continued to run Searchers, Inc. and even aided her ex-husband on some of his missions. However, when Slade was forced to kill their son Joseph, it drove a wedge between Slade and Addie.
Having been imprisoned for almost a decade, Addie’s first husband, Jacques Morel, returned and sought the Kane ancestral armor, which was rumored to contain the secret location of a long-lost treasure. Morel kidnapped Addie and injected her with a slow-acting poison to force her compliance. Deathstroke and Wintergreen tracked the pair around the world and eventually to Egypt, where it was discovered the armor was itself a star map to the lost treasure. Morel was infuriated to discover the “treasure” was actually the scroll libraries of Alexandria, Instead of gold or jewels. An enraged Morel boasted that there was never an antidote to Adeline’s poison, which enabled Addie to kill Morel during a fight with Deathstroke. To save Adeline’s life, Deathstroke gave Adeline a transfusion of his own super-human blood, which contained regenerative properties.

Unknown to either Deathstroke or Addie, Slade's blood transfusion also began to slowly drive her insane. Adeline exhibited strange behavior, blaming Slade for her sons' deaths while vowing to punish him. To this end, she kidnapped his new lover, Pat Trayce, the second Vigilante.
Meanwhile, Slade Wilson’s murderous half-brother, Wade DeFarge, co-opted the Ravager identity and began to hunt Slade's friends and loved ones. Now completely over the edge, Addie donned the Vigilante costume and came into conflict with Slade and the Ravager. After Adeline was bruised and healed immediately, Slade guessed the truth: Slade's blood transfusion gave her rapid-healing powers, but also was driving her quite mad. During the confrontation with Ravager, Addie was shot between the eyes and presumed dead. Later, in the morgue, Adeline awoke. Apparently, she had gained Slade's regenerative abilities as well, granting her virtual immortality.
Addie eventually resurfaced - founding a new H.I.V.E. made up of nihilistic youths. The all-new H.I.V.E.'s mission was a simple one: rid the world of all super-powered meta-humans, as Adeline blamed super heroes for the deaths of her two sons.
Addie lured the Titans and other heroes to Zandia with the intention of detonating a thermo-nuclear bomb to destroy as many heroes as possible in one fell swoop. Meanwhile, the anti-Titans group known as Tartarus was tracking Adeline Kane for their own purposes; Tartarus leader Vandal Savage sought to harvest Addie's regenerative blood to create an immortality serum.
The Titans with the help of Deathstroke tracked Tartarus to Zandia and found themselves in a dangerous three-way battle for their lives. Savage slit Addie's throat in an attempt to synthesize her blood - and offered Cyborg a human body if he would help Savage harvest the blood into a serum. Addie, drained of her regenerative blood, was brain dead. Cyborg agonized whether to accept Savage's offer. But before a decision was reached, Starfire fired a starbolt at Addie, killing her as a gesture of mercy.
The H.I.V.E. was contained, the bomb was deactivated and Tartarus escaped, as Slade was left to mourn his ex-wife.

Addie later went insane from a super-human blood transfusion from her ex-husband, Deathstroke. Pat Trayce, who had adopted the identity of Vigilante, was later hunted and captured by the now-insane Addie Kane. Madly jealous of Pat's relationship with her ex-husband, Addie attempted to frame Pat, which tragically led to Addie's own death. By this time, Trayce had let go of the anger and vengeance that had driven her for so long. She salvaged what was left of Adeline Kane's company, Searchers, Inc., and created her own search & rescue operation known as Vigilance. No longer taking the law into her own hands, Pat vowed that Vigilance would be a company dedicated to helping people.

Lili dies while protecting her daughter
in DEATHSTROKE #45 [1995]. |
|
Her father’s father was third brother to the king. But Princess Lillian "Sweet Lili" Worth’s life fell in ruins after her kingdom was destroyed by a war in the Far East. This left her people as little more than slaves to the Khmer Rouge.
A few years after his divorce from Adeline Kane, Slade Wilson accepted a search and rescue freelance job in the Orient. The mission was simple enough to Slade: The Khmer Rouge were holding prisoner a Cambodian princess in the Siem Pang Wat. The plan was to bring her from war-torn Cambodia across the border into Thailand, where she would be free from her oppressive captors. Slade successfully freed "Sweet Lili" and her girls, and the group headed into the jungle to avoid the patrols.
Expecting Lili to be a woman of privilege, Slade was both surprised and impressed by her resilience. The Khmer Rouge later gunned down the entire rescue team, killing Lili’s girls in the crossfire. Slade himself was injured and feverish from a gunshot wound, which Lili helped heal with local herbs. In the week it took for Slade’s fever to break, Lili defended them from snakes and insects - and even stray Rogue soldiers. During their intense journey to Thailand, Slade and Lili became lovers.
Slade and Lili remained in contact through the years, embarking an an on/off love affair whenever their paths crossed. During one of their trysts, Slade impregnated Lili, who later gave birth to Rose Worth. Lili kept Rose a secret from Slade, rationalizing it was in the child's best interest to do so.
Lili eventually settled outside New York City, where she established a brothel and lived in luxury. Protected from the outside world, their lavish living space could only be accessed through an intricate system of underground tunnels beneath the city. Lili took good care of the girls in her employ, and raised Rose there as well. Despite the environment, Rose was raised with other children her age and was schooled by private tutors. She not only received a exemplary upbringing, but was also taught by her mother how to defend herself.
The End Of The Road
When Slade was injured and on the lam from the law, Lili took him in and nursed his wounds. It was at this time that Wintergreen first met fourteen year old Rose Wilson and suspected Slade was her father.
Rose still wears her mother's Cambodian necklace as a reminder of their bond.
