Brotherhood of Evil

THE ORIGINAL BROTHERHOOD OF EVIL:
Madame Rouge, General Immortus, Garguax, Brain and Monsieur Mallah

The Brotherhood of Evil is a powerful international crime syndicate that was founded years ago. Its inner circlewas originally comprised the Brain, a disembodied human brain preserved in a special fluid; Monsieur Mallah, a gorilla given superhuman intelligence through the Brain's surgical techniques; and Madame Rouge, an elastic villainess gifted with extraordinary disguise skills. The Brotherhood of Evil battled the original Doom Patrol numerous times before Rouge was finally driven insane after one of the Brain's experimental surgical operations. Allying herself with General ZahI, another of the Doom Patrol's enemies, Rouge turned against her comrades and tried to kill them.

Unbeknownst to Rouge, the Brain and Mallah survived her attack and remained in hiding for the next several years while scouting for new super-villains who could help them rebuild the Brotherhood. From Saint-Tropez, France, came Emil LaSalle, a.k.a. Warp; from London, England, came Angela Hawkins Ill, who called herself Phobia; from Haiti came Jean-Louis Droo, better known as Houngan; and in East Berlin, Germany, the Brain found Otto von Furth - Plasmus.

THE NEW BROTHERHOOD OF EVIL:
Trinity, Houngan, Warp, Plasmus and Phobia

With the Brotherhood once again at full strength, the Brain led his new followers on a mission to find and kill Rouge and ZahI. Their pursuit led them to Africa and into a battle with the New Titans, who were also after Rouge; in the melee, Rouge and ZahI paid for their crimes with their lives, allowing the new Brotherhood to escape capture.

The Titans crossed paths with the Brotherhood more than once when the Brain, for his own purposes, declared war on the Titans' archenemy Brother Blood. The Brain and Monsieur Mallah eventually took leave of the team to fulfill their own agendas, at which time those remaining adopted a new member, Trinity, and a new name - the Society of Sin. Based in Zandia, the Society of Sin engaged in terrorist activities, high-stakes robberies and assassination contracts.

Eventually, The Brain and Monsieur Mallah returned to establish another Brotherhood of Evil. This new Brotherhood welcomed old and new members alike.

General Zahl

As commander of a Nazi U-boat during World War II, Captain Zahl proved himself a cold-blooded, ruthless killer, achieving the highest number of kills of any commander in the German fleet. Zahl escaped capture by the Allies after the fall of the Third Reich and fled to Argentina. There he established himself as a mercenary and was soon hiring out his services to the highest bidder in armed conflicts around the world. Zahl first met Niles Caulder during the course of one such operation, and in the conflict that followed, Zahl was defeated and soon forced into retirement.

When Zahl returned, he stayed clear of Niles ‘Chief' Caulder and his Doom Patrol until he was sought out by Madame Rouge as an ally to help destroy Zahl's old foe. Zahl joined with Rouge, and the two were able to force the Doom Patrol to its remote island base, where the heroes were trapped and finally destroyed.

Rouge and Zahl, who had now assigned himself the rank of General, continued their criminal partnership and were still together years later when Robotman and the New Teen Titans came searching for them. General Zahl died in this final battle when bullets he shot at Robotman were deflected back upon himself.

New Teen Titans #13-15 [1981-1982]: Robin, Cyborg and Kid Flash meet up with Robotman, and the group rescues a drugged Steve Dayton from Madame Rouge's underground city in Africa. The Titans reunite and are attacked by Steve Dayton in his Mento identity, who is under Madame Rouge's control; Raven brings Dayton back to normal, and the heroes follow Madame Rouge and General Zahl to Zandia; Zahi's forces defeat and capture the Titans while Changeling is taken prisoner by the New Brotherhood of Evil. Changeling agrees to work with the New Brotherhood of Evil, and the group rescues the Titans; General Zahl is killed by a bullet which ricochets off Robotman's body, Madame Rouge is killed by Changeling, and the Brotherhood is allowed to go free. First appearance of New Brotherhood of Evil in issue #14; First appearance of Warp, Houngan, Phobia and Plasmus.

Madame Rouge

Alias: Laura De Mille

Madame Rouge undergoes a procedure that gives her body-altering abilities in DOOM PATROL #90 [1964].

As a stage actress, Laura De Mille was infamous for her ability to assume almost any persona, using her skill with makeup. Unfortunately, Laura received a blow to her head in an auto accident, which caused her to develop a split personality, thereby ending her acting career.

The Brain offered to have Mallah perform some curative surgery on Laura. It was a success; instead of being half-good/half-evil, Laura was now completely evil-a result the Brain had engineered in advance. Her disguise ability gave her high position in the Brotherhood of Evil. Later, the Brain gave Laura powers of true disguise, which included the ability to mold her features and stretch her body.

Madame Rouge eventually began to exhibit signs of her old personality disorder, only this time she started acting out her nobler instincts. On several occasions, she acted covertly against the Brotherhood to foil schemes that would have destroyed the Doom Patrol. She began to realize that she was falling in love with Niles "Chief" Caulder.

Gar Logan vs. Madame Rouge from NEW TEEN TITANS #13-15 [1982].

Eventually, the Chief was able to devise a means of reversing the Brain's influence over her. Madame Rouge was apparently cured of her evil tendencies after a battle between the two parts of her personality. She opted to remain with the Chief and the Doom Patrol.

Gar Logan vs. Madame Rouge from NEW TEEN TITANS #13-15 [1982].

The Brain was unsuccessful in his attempts to bring Rouge back into the fold of the Brotherhood. Where he failed, however, the evil guru Yaramishi Rama Yogi succeeded. While attempting to control the Doom Patrol through psychological means, Yaramishi undid the Chiefs rehabilitative efforts. Now resentful of both the Chief, for his attempts at subverting what she once again believed was the preferred way of life, and the Brotherhood of Evil, for its attempts to kill her after her defection, Madame Rouge went into hiding to plot the destruction of both groups.

Madame Rouge allied herself with Captain Zahl to accomplish her vengeance. She first attacked the Brotherhood, and from all appearances, destroyed her former allies. She then forced the Doom Patrol to retreat to its secret island base that she and Zahl destroyed, apparently killing the Doom Patrol.

Rouge and Zahl continued their alliance years after the supposed death of the Doom Patrol, until Robotman and the New Teen Titans tracked them down. The two villains were made to pay for their crimes; Madame Rouge died at the hands of Changeling.

Personality-wise, Rouge seemed to swing from being a cold-hearted butcher to someone who only wanted to lead a normal life again. Her good side came out in the end, because the Chiefs name was on her lips when she died.

A young woman has surfaced, claiming to be the daughter of Madame Rouge. Calling herself Gemini, the unstable girl tried to frame Gar Logan for murder and completely discredit him. She blamed Logan for the death of her mother. According to Gemini, Laura De Mille (Madame Rouge) had a daughter during a time when she was reformed. Gemini has inherited her mother's shape shifting abilities. After a pitched battle with Gar Logan, Gemini was defeated and Gar Logan cleared his name. Since that time, Gemini has allied herself with The Brain and Monsieur Mallah as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil.

Madame Rouge had the ability to shape shift into any form.

Such a fun-loving group could not be complete without a woman, and in Madame Rouge, the Brotherhood could not have asked for a femme more fatale. Her initiation into the group, however, was not by her design. As we discovered in Doom Patrol #112 (June, 1967), Laura DeMille was an actress in the Paris theatre - young, popular, and well on her way to stardom. Yet a car crash changed her future: she survived - but became prone to uncontrollable swings in her temperament. One minute she would be telling children stories and the next, she would stomp on their toys. She suffered from schizophrenia. Seeking the help of a specialist who claimed that he had successfully experimented with schizoids using a ray treatment to bolster the positive and reduce the negative sides of a patient's personality, MIle. DeMille submitted to the treatment. But she had been tricked. The specialist was really Mallah in disguise, acting under the guidance of the Brain. The machine did just the opposite of what Laura DeMille expected - her negative side was enhanced and her positive side submerged. As a later issue would reveal, this conflict would sow the seeds for the final battleground of the Doom Patrol. The Brain was not finished with Madame DeMille, though. At first, she had no special powers, but in Doom Patrol #90 (Sept., 1964), he subjected her to a radiation treatment that altered her molecular structure. The treatment made her body rubbery - she could mold her features or elongate any part of her anatomy like Plastic Man. [information courtesy of Amazing Heroes Magazine].

BRAIN
MALLAH

The Brain & Monsieur Mallah

The original Brotherhood of Evil plots and plans in DOOM PATROL #90 [1964].

The Brotherhood of Evil

Little has been revealed of the history of either the French scientist and criminal genius known as the Brain or his right-hand ape, Monsieur Mallah.

According to The Brain, he was once a peer to Dr. Niles Caulder, who would later lead the Doom Patrol as The Chief. The Brain claims that Caulder was jealous of his accolades and awards; So envious, he set out to destroy him by triggering an explosion in his lab. His body now obliterated, Caulder saved his brain with the intention of placing it in a new, copper body. But before Caulder could create his first "Robot Man", an intelligent gorilla rescued The Brain from his fate.

The Brain took that gorilla and oversaw a delicate operation which enhanced its intellectual prowess. The gorilla's I.Q. was brought up to 178 - genius level - and the ape was taught to read, speak, and behave as a human being. The Brain's original intent had been to have himself implanted into the body of the slavishly faithful ape, which he had renamed Monsieur Mallah; instead, armed with Mallah's might, the Brain became the cornerstone of the international crime syndicate known as the Brotherhood of Evil.

Brain and Mallah from TEEN TITANS (third series) #37 [2006].

Later recruiting the Parisian Madame Rouge and, for a short time, Mr. Morden, the Brain led the Brotherhood in several battles against the original Doom Patrol, who stood between the evil organization and its expansion into the United States. Eventually, Madame Rouge was cured of her evil tendencies (albeit temporarily) and she joined the Doom Patrol, at which time the Brain attempted to have her assassinated. When Rouge's dark side once more took control, she returned to get revenge against the Brotherhood and believed she had killed them. She was mistaken; the Brain and Monsieur Mallah later returned with a new Brotherhood of Evil, which met defeat at the hands of the New Teen Titans.

Strange Love

Mallah and the Brain went into hiding until the Doom Patrol was revived once more; the two then infiltrated the Doom Patrol's mountain headquarters outside Happy Harbor, Rhode Island, with the intent of transferring the Brain into one of Robotman's old bodies. They were unaware that the robot body they had chosen had itself become sentient and had booby-trapped itself against accepting a human brain. When the transfer was completed, the ensuing explosion apparently destroyed both the Brain and his friend Mallah - but not before they could, at last, embrace and confess their long-unrequited love for one another.

Brain and Mallah have since resurfaced, having survived the explosion. They have resumed their criminal activities, using Zandia as their base. In one of their boldest schemes, Mallah sought to create a cloned body for The Brain so they could be together at last. The clone's molecular structure proved unstable and the Brotherhood's plan was ultimately halted by the combined might of the Teen Titans and the Doom Patrol.

The Brain possessed an incredible intellect, capable of designing complex criminal schemes and highly advanced weaponry. On a few occasions, the Brain utilized the body of a giant robot named Rog to become mobile. Monsieur Mallah, while not as brilliant as his mentor, was nevertheless a genius well versed in science and surgical techniques. Stronger and more agile than non-powered humans, Mallah was quite formidable in hand-to-hand combat.

Doom Patrol (first series) #86, 87, 90, 93, 96, 97, 101, 104, 107-112, 118, 119, 121 and Brave and the Bold #65 [1963-1969]: The Brotherhood of Evil battle the Doom Patrol. On the cover of the first issue to be called The Doom Patrol, (#86), the DP witnessed through their monitor screen what readers would soon learn was a human brain encased in a transparent globe and immersed in bubbling nutritive fluids giving orders to a gorilla armed with a submachine gun and a bandolier of cartridges. "This is the ultimate mission for which I created you - the destruction of the Doom Patrol! Summon the others!" said the brain's electronic voice. "Yes, Master, I will obey!" replied the gorilla. This was the first appearance of the Brotherhood of Evil. While the Brain served as the mastermind of the Brotherhood of Evil, there were stories in which he did gain a "body": Doom Patrol #93 (Feb. 1965), where he infiltrated the DP by transplanting his brain into Robotman's body, #101 (Feb., 1966) and #107-108 (Nov.-Dec., 1966) as Kranus and Ultimax, two robotic foes of the DP, and in #110 (Mar., 1967) where he sported a body made of photonic particles. The Brain's first creation and right hand "man" was the machine-gun-toting Monsieur Mallah. Mallah's intellect was a consequence of the Brain's experimentation and the gorilla was as intelligent as any learned scientist. With his animal strength he made a good foe for Robotman, so he and Cliff Steele would often tangle. Drake chose the gorilla, not because of DC's well-known predilection for gorillas (common to the books edited by Julie Schwartz and Mort Weisinger) as much as because the gorilla is so close to man, yet retains its animal heritage.
New Teen Titans #29 [1983]: The Brain, believing that Raven has information that will help him defeat Brother Blood, sends his New Brotherhood of Evil to capture the empath; Frances Kane returns because her powers are resurfacing, and witnesses a battle between the New Brotherhood of Evil and the Titans, in which Raven thinks that Kid Flash is Trigon (due to Phobia's manipulation) and nearly kills him; Raven leaves the Titans because she cannot handle Kid Flash's hatred.
New Teen Titans #30 [1983]: The New Brotherhood of Evil follows Raven; Raven seeks solitude in St. Peter's Cathedral, where the New Brotherhood of Evil finds her; During the Titans' and the New Brotherhood of Evil's battle in Times Square on New Year's Eve, Raven's soul-self is shattered yet again when she tries to envelop Brotherhood member Plasmus; The New Brotherhood of Evil takes Raven to Zandia.

New Titans Annual #6 [1990]: The Titans fight the Society of Sin [formerly the Brotherhood of Evil], with their new member, Trinity. Following that, they are summoned to Tamaran.
Teen Titans #34-37 [2006]: One Year Later, it's "The New Teen Titans!" A new year of exciting adventures begins with the "new" Teen Titans, the bizarre Doom Patrol and the mysterious and secretive Titans East! The latest version of The Brotherhood of Evil debuts. Mallah tries to clone a body for The Brain. The origin of The Brain is revealed in issue #37.

Houngan
Alias: Jean-Louis Droo

TOP: Artwork from DC Cosmic Teams Card Set, 1993. RIGHT: The New Brotherhood Debut in NEW TEEN TITANS #14-15 [1982].

Jean-Louis Droo, Haitian-born but schooled in America., worked as a computer scientist for a large Silicon Valley computer company until the news of his father's impending death brought the young scientist back to the land of his birth. Once home, Droo found modem medicine was unable to aid his father and that the only hope was a local "houngan"-a voodoo master.

Droo watched in fascination as the houngan completely cured his father's illness. Soon Droo became a virtual voodoo fanatic, devoting every waking hour to learning all there was to know about this most ancient art.

Within two years Droo became a voodoo master, but unlike his teachers, Droo merged the ancient voodoo rituals with modem computer science. Today Droo, who now calls himself Houngan, uses an electronic needle-stylus and a computerized voodoo doll to create terrors the old voodoo houngans could never have imagined.

Since then, Houngan and the Brotherhood have opposed the New Teen Titans on numerous occasions. Houngan later resurfaced back with the Brotherhood, now calling themselves the Society of Sin. Houngan is a proud man who loyally follows the Brain because he respects the Brain's leadership abilities.

Once Houngan's computerized voodoo doll analyzes a victim's cell structure, from a sample of blood, skin, or hair, the doll's micro-circuitry creates a bionic link between itself and the Intended victim. When the electronic stylus Interfaces anywhere on the doll's surface, Incredibly delicate micro-sensors relay the Information to the computer's central system, which then focuses the pain into the same area on the intended victim. Distance for effective use of the doll and stylus has never been completely tested, but a range of slightly less than 1,000 feat has been recorded to date. Houngan is not a physical fighter, preferring to use his science and sorcery to overcome his victims.

Phobia
Alias: Angela Hawkins III

TOP: Artwork from DC Cosmic Teams Card Set, 1993. RIGHT: The New Brotherhood Debut in NEW TEEN TITANS #14-15 [1982].

Born a member of the British aristocracy with the power to make people experience their worst fears, Angela Hawkins was a "bad seed" who rejected any help from her family.

When the Brain came to London to recruit her for the reformation of the Brotherhood of Evil, Angela was more than ready to join. She joined the New Brotherhood of Evil in the hopes of covering her own fears by unleashing those of others. Sometimes, man-hating tendencies rose up in her. Angela suffers from the fear of being alone. Since then, Phobia and the Brotherhood have opposed the New Teen Titans on numerous occasions.

A later encounter with Raven made Phobia confront the fears and insecurities that lay within herself - stemming back to issues with her childhood, and her father, Lord Hawkins. It appeared Phobia might reform and abandon her criminal ways following this encounter.

Phobia later returned to her criminal ways as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil.

Phobia's natural born psychic powers allow her complete and total mastery over the fear centers of the human mind. She is able to probe into the psyches of her victims, discovering the things they most fear and then manifesting those fears in their minds with illusions, which cause them to be consumed with terror.

Plasmus
Alias: Otto Von Furth

TOP: Artwork from DC Cosmic Teams Card Set, 1993. RIGHT: The New Brotherhood Debut in NEW TEEN TITANS #14-15 [1982].

Otto Von Furth was a mine worker in East Berlin, Germany, where an unexpected cave-in trapped him and four fellow miners for seven days. During that time, Von Furth's coworkers died, leaving him as the lone survivor.

They had been mining highly radioactive radium, and Von Furth nearly succumbed to its deadly rays. Miraculously, however, he survived. Once rescued, Von Furth was brought to a local hospital, but he was soon kidnapped by an ex-Nazi known as General ZahI. In his own laboratory, Zahl used Von Furth's radioactive body for further experimentation, subjecting him to chemical testing that resulted in a massive mutation. Due to his anger at existing in a blob-like state, Plasmus is cruel and ruthless.

Von Furth's body changed into unstable protoplasm, and he was brought into the newly reformed Brotherhood of Evil, where he took the name Plasmus. Plasmus enjoys fighting and regrets. not being the one who destroyed General Zahl.

Since then, Plasmus and the Brotherhood have opposed the New Teen Titans on numerous occasions. Plasmus later resurfaced back with the Brotherhood.

Plasmus' radiation and chemically converted body gives him the ability to bring fiery death to whoever he touches, and to reduce any living matter to its protoplasmic state. There is no cure for his touch, and to date nothing has been discovered that can withstand his burning powers. To defend himself, Plasmus can make his cells lose cohesion so that bullets pass through him and punches are ineffectual.

Warp
Alias: Emil LaSalle

TOP: Artwork from DC Cosmic Teams Card Set, 1993. RIGHT: The New Brotherhood Debut in NEW TEEN TITANS #14-15 [1982].

Emil LaSalle's origin is unknown. The French nationalist joined the New Brotherhood in order to get back at Madame Rouge, who had somehow offended him in the past.

As Warp, he joined the Brotherhood of Evil because of that group's plan for revenge against Rouge. With the help of the New Teen Titans, the Brotherhood killed Rouge and her accomplices. Warp is one of the most unstable members of the Brotherhood. He enjoys leading the romantic life of an international criminal and considers himself his own man. He works with the Brotherhood, not just for them. Warp feels some sort of loyalty toward the other new members of the Brotherhood, for he will not leave them in the lurch.

Since then, Warp and the Brotherhood have opposed the New Teen Titans on numerous occasions. Warp later resurfaced back with the Brotherhood.

In addition to the power of flight. Warp has the ability to open a warp or hole in space between any two locations with which he can teleport himself and others across great distances instantaneously. Repeated use of his power markedly tires him.

Trinity
Alias: real name unknown

TRINITY
From DC Cosmic Teams
Card Set, 1993

The Society of Sin inducted a new mysterious member known as Trinity - a woman with three faces - Time, War, and Chaos, each of which possesses its own power. Virtually nothing was known about her background or her reasons for joining the Society of Sin.

Later, Trinity was inducted as a member of Villainy, Inc. - a group of criminals gathered by the Atlantean queen Clea. Clea stole the Trident of Poseidon and used it to tear a dimensional hole into the world of Skartaris. There, Clea and her new Villainy Inc. - gathered because of their unique powers - were able to use those special abilities to vanquish Travis Morgan, the Warlord, and his sorceress daughter Jennifer, and seize control of the ancient city of Shamballah. Wonder Woman followed Villainy Inc. to Skartaris with the hope of leading its people against Villainy Inc. and liberating them from Clea's tyranny.

But Trinity had a sinister agenda of her own. Revealed to be a living computer virus created by the Atlanteans a millennia ago, Trinity had downloaded itself into the master computer controlling all of Skartaris, hoping to "rewind" time and "reset" the dimension.. Until Wonder Woman destroyed it with the mythic trident of Poseidon.

Whether Trinity survived this mystic assault remains to be seen.

Trinity is a mystery woman with three faces - Time, War, and Chaos, each of which possesses its own power. Time can selectively slow the timestream, War can fire deadly bolts of force, and Chaos can project maddening illusions.
