ANIMATED MAS Y MENOS:

Mas Y Menos: Animated Origins

Sometimes, characters are created for an animated series - and then find an extended life in comic book form. Firestar started on "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends." Harley Quinn started on "Batman: The Animated Series." Livewire and Mercy Graves started on "Superman: The Animated Series." And... Mas Y Menos started on "Teen Titans." The super-speed duo made their comic book debut in Teen Titans (third series) #38 [2006], as two members that joined during the "missing year" after the Infinite Crisis.

Fighting for truth, justice and the last piece of pizza, the Teen Titans animated series debuted on Cartoon Network on Saturday, July 19, 2003. A new generation of superheroes came to life as Robin led Cyborg, Beast Boy, Starfire and Raven in this all-new, high-adventure series based on the popular DC Comic Book Series. Teen Titans was produced by Warner Bros. Animation under the guidance of Emmy Award-winner Glen Murakami. The series ran for 65 episodes from 2003-2006.

The series introduced a brand-new pair of Titans teammates, created specifically for the show. In the third season episode, "Titans East [parts 1 & 2]", Mas Y Menos made their debut.

Mas Y Menos are a pair of hyper-active high-speed twins. When connected by holding hands, the Spanish-speaking heroes can reach super-sonic speeds! But knock them apart, and they are just normal teenage boys. "Mas Y Menos" - which translates as "more and less" - is an apt description for the super-speedy siblings.

Mas Y Menos joined Bumblebee, Speedy and Aqualad and formed a new Titans team - called Titans East - to take down Brother Blood. Speaking only Spanish, understanding the twins is sometimes a challenge to their Titans teammates. Following Blood's defeat at the hands of Cyborg, Titans East decided to remain a team and fight crime in Steel City.

Mas Y Menos returned in the fifth season, and were featured in a Titans East-centered episode, "For Real." Mas Y Menos was voiced by actor, Freddy Rodríguez.

Producer David Slack on Mas Y Menos: "Mas Y Menos developed from wanting to a speedster character. But we didn't just want to do another version of Kid Flash. Then Sam [Register] and Glen [Murakami] thought of this idea of a binary Flash. They can go really fast, but only when they're touching. They're kind of like circus acrobats. If they grab hands, zoom! If they get knocked apart, they're just a couple of kids."

"So then I said the sentence I may regret for the rest of my life. I said, "OK, but only if they just speak Spanish." [laughs]. It was a really fun idea but ended up being difficult to do. I don't know that we'd want to do a whole episode with them.... but we got a little bilingual in the show. I speak decent Spanish, but Alex Soto - our director, speaks fluent Spanish. So he was correcting my terrible translation. So they're kind of a cross between Flash and the Wonder Twins. That's really something that Sam, Glen and the whole group cooked up. the great thing about TITANS is that it's really just a pot-luck. Everyone brings something."

"They're a lot of fun. They are so unlike other super-heroes you're going to see. They're really sympathetic. And they are unique in a way. Our other characters have mostly been adapted from another medium and given a different tone. Mas Y Menos, in a sense, are the only true 'animated' Titans."

The One Year Gap Titans

"You call this the Titans? Since Superboy died, the Titans have gone through over twenty new members. But no one wanted to stay very long. No one got along."
- Wonder Girl (Teen Titans (third series) #36 [2006])

DC's "One Year Later" event occurred March of 2006. In Teen Titans #33, Superboy and Nightwing are in the thick of the Infinite Crisis world-shattering event. With Teen Titans #34, a full year has passed since the Crisis. A comatose Cyborg awakens to discover the only active Titans: Robin, Ravager and Kid Devil. Cyborg is told that the Titans had quite a few membership shake-ups during his "missing year."

Readers shared in Cyborg's confusion. Following the limited series, Infinite Crisis, every DC comic series jumped ahead by one year between February 2006 and March 2006. With DC's March books, the characters' histories resumed "one year later." During the "missing year" between Teen Titans #33 and #34, over 20 new or returning members joined the team. They would come and go, most only being on the team a few weeks before quitting or getting kicked out or simply disappearing. One team was glimpsed at in Teen Titans #34. Teen Titans #38 revealed all the "One Year Gap Titans" in a double page spread.
