NEW TEEN TITANS second series /
NEW TITANS [1984-1996]

COVER TO NEW TEEN TITANS #1

New Teen Titans #1 [1984] to 49 [1989]
New Titans #50 [1989] to 130 [1996]

Based on the popularity of the New Teen Titans, DC launched them into an all-new second series. This book was printed offset on top-grade white paper with rich, vibrant colors - known as the baxter format. The series picked up right where Tales of the Teen Titans left off. Marv Wolfman and George Pérez were still at the helm. Upon the sixth issue, however, George Pérez left the book and was replaced by Jose Garcia Lopez and, later, Eduardo Barreto.

The stories still chronicled the adventures of the Titans team and later added another member, Danny Chase, a teenager with telekenetic powers. George Pérez returned to the title with #50, which marked another change: the book dropped the 'Teen' from the title, and the book became The New Titans. The first storyline featured the classic story, "Who is Wondergirl?" During the storyline, Wonder Girl became Troia (New Titans #55).

George Pérez continued with the title, but Tom Grummett assisted him with the art chores and eventually took over the full art chores of the book. Pérez co-plotted a few issues, but left the title again with issue #67. After a few fill-in stories, New Titans took a radical change in direction with the controversial "Titans Hunt" storyline with issue #71. The Titans Hunt story itself ran from New Titans #71-84.

New editor Jonathan Peterson, an avowed Titans fan, felt the book had grown to complacent. From the lettercol of #71: "You see, what we all agreed on was the fact that the Titans as a group had become too settled in. Things were far too quiet. So we gleefully decided that it was time to, well how can I say it, "shake things up." And I mean A LOT. Over the course of the next few months things are not going to be what you expect. I can guarantee it. Over the course of the next few months the Titans Universe will change in ways you never thought we'd dare to change it. You'll see an entire new evolution in the characters themselves and in the debut of a new team. That's right--I said a new team. It's been ten years since the Titans debuted and to celebrate that fact we thought it was time to introduce some all-new team members. Where does that leave us? Well, in the months ahead some Titans will stay...some will go...some will die...some will get marr--oopsl Don't want to spoil all the surprises."

Jonathan Peterson, Titans Editor: "Marv realized that while Titans had once been a lynch pin of DC...I mean, it rivaled the X-Men at one point in sales and popularity...it was now nowhere near that level. So even Marv knew changes had to be made. And to be honest, that's how I presented it to him. I literally just asked him, "Yeah, but are you REALLY having fun writing the book anymore?" And Marv replied, "No, not really. After all these years, I'm not sure I have many stories left in me to tell. I mean, what's left?" At that point I pulled out my notes and said, "Look, issue 71 (if I have the number right) is going to be the tenth anniversary issue. After 10 years there's more than enough history for us to screw with...to just jump in the pool and have fun with. So let's just stir the pot. I mean, what's the worst that can happen?"

The Titans Hunt generated excitement and interest, but editor Peterson left the book before the ambitious three-phase storyline was finished. Peterson was the driving force behind these changes, and the book was left in a state of disarray [New Titans #92 was his last]. The "Titans Hunt" had written out some long-time members and introduced new members Pantha, Baby Wildebeest, Red Star and Phantasm. The storyline also introduced the time-tossed Team Titans (also featuring a new Terra) in New Titans #79. After the smoke had cleared, the book was direction-less and flooded with new characters. Meanwhile, the Team Titans and Deathstroke were launched into their own series.

Roy Harper returned to the team in issue #99 and assumed a new costumed identity of Arsenal.

Tom Grummett continued on the title until #100, and Bill Jaaska assumed art chores. The book still had not established a solid direction, and Bill Jaaska (although a good artist) had a rough art style ill-suited for the Titans. Sales dropped, and the Titans changed direction in an effort to jump-start the book.

Following the events of Zero Hour, New Titans #0 launched an all-new Titans team, sponsored by the government and led by Arsenal. The team began operating in #115 of the series. Members included Darkstar (Donna Troy), Green Lantern, Impulse, Damage, and former Team Titans Mirage and Terra (whose series had been canceled and fellow teammates erased from existence). Later members included Supergirl, Minion and Rose Wilson. The book attempted to use some popular, more recognized characters to bolster sales. William Rosado became the artist on the title. The new team failed to spark enough interest and DC decided to cancel the book with #130. Marv Wolfman crafted a final storyline (#126-130) that brought back former members and brought his 16 year run on the series to a close.

Synopsis:
Trigon awakens at full strength, possessing the souls of everyone on Earth except for the Titans and Arella, and has grown to an even larger size, dwarfing the Titans Tower. Wally West launches a hopeless attack on the demon with his super-speed, and the other Titans follow him into battle. With minimal effort, Trigon lifts the former tower into the air, and sends it onto the Titans except Nightwing, who he then dispatches with his staff. Only Lilith and Arella remain, but Lilith senses the Titans are still alive. Starfire had used her star bolts to protect them from the falling tower and now uses them to free them from the rubble. She then locates and revives Nightwing. Despairing, Wally is ready to give up, but the other Titans decide to fight on, even in a seemingly hopeless cause.

As they rush to confront their foe, Lilith tries to rouse Arella to action, but fails until Raven's mother hears Lilith speaking in the voice of the deceased Azar, the former spiritual leader of the Temple Azarath. As the Titans approach, Trigon begins to open a gateway to his ravaged home universe, intending to recreate it by allowing it to absorb the dimension containing Earth. While the Titans fight a delaying action, Arella and Lilith, who is being controlled by Azar, replace Raven's rings on her body. Raven's soul-self, now an angelic pure-white entity that is serving as a conduit for the power of Azar, rises from her still form and grows to envelop Trigon, ultimately destroying him. The form of Raven rises from the battle site, and disappears, while the darkness that had covered the world vanishes and the Earth returns to normal.
