Mark Waid's Favorites
Waid reveals his favorite Silver Age stories...
Mark Waid listed his top 10 Silver Age stories, among them...
So what are his favorites? He had no trouble reeling them off, and they're kinda suprising. Among those listed, Waid cites a Teen Titans tale:
"Quit, Robin, Quit!" in Teen Titans #14 (Mar-Apr 68). Readers journeyed into The Boy Wonder's mind, as he faced The Gargoyle, who tried to undermine Robin's confidence and win him to the dark side. "This was dear to my heart for numerous reasons," Waid said. "First, it centered on Robin, my favorite Titan. Second, we finally got to see exactly how that costume worked - you mean there's a tunic under that red vest? And finally, my God, what a cover. This is my favorite comic-book cover of all time. I commissioned Nick Cardy to recreate it as a twice-up painting, and it hangs proudly in my home."
Ironically, Kurt Busiek singled out TT #16 as one of his Top 10, citing its Cardy-drawn cover as one of the best ever. "And #16's got a better story," Waid agreed upon hearing this. "Heck, it's probably one of the best-drawn comics of the 1960s. But that cover can't match #14's, say I.'
