update >> march 25 >> 2005"Robot Chicken" Features Teen Titans
Last night I attended the Cartoon Network Adult Swim upfront presentation. A lot of the creators were in full force... Mingling and chatting about the shows. I caught up with producers Seth Green and former ToyFare Editor Matt Senreich, who were very excited about their stop-motion animated sketch-fest, "Robot Chicken."
Seth mentioned how cool it was to get some guest voices such as Burt Reynolds, Phyllis Diller and Don Knotts. He was also very proud that he just completed his very first stop-animation sequence for a future episode. Matt said the show is a blast to work on. Many of the guest voices come out for the voice recording - such as Burt Reynolds - who ended up hanging out at the studio for most of the day. They were both very gratified to see the show is getting a buzz behind it.
Seth also revealed to me that the [most likely 'old school'] Teen Titans will be appearing in an upcoming episode! Look for the Teen Titans on "Robot Chicken" - which airs Sunday nights at 11:30pm. And look for Animation Insider to have a full report on the upfront presentation this weekend! "Robot Chicken" does contain adult themes and content - and is recommended for people over 14 years old.
update >> march 20 >> 2005All About Andre Le Blanc
Andre Le Blanc makes his animated debut in the fifth season episode, "For Real." Le Blanc has only made one appearance in the original comic book series way back in 1968. But titanstower.com has all the info on the flashy French filcher.
Here's his background: The self-styled "world's greatest jewel thief," arrogant Andre Le Blanc made the international most wanted list. Le Blanc often clashed with the Russian super-hero Lenoid Kovar - who was also known as Starfire. Le Blanc delighted in evading capture by the young hero.
Interpol requested that the Teen Titans team up with Starfire to safeguard the Crown Jewels of Sweden from Le Blanc. So confident in his abilities, the bragging thief announced his crimes before they were committed. Mutual antagonism spoiled the joint efforts of the American and Soviet champions, until Starfire rescued the Titans from Le Blanc's deathtraps. Kid Flash then returned the favor by saving Starfire from death on the subway tracks, while Robin defeated Le Blanc in hand-to-hand combat.

update >> february 26 >> 2005Cartoon Cameos: Teen Titans Creators Make Episode Appearances
Did you know Aqualad's sidekick, Tramm the fishboy, is named after Teen Titans producer/consultant Tramm Wigzell? That's just one of the "appearances" the Teen Titans creators have made in the series.
Producer David Slack reveals some hidden cameos: " Yeah -- there are names all over the place. There were the hungry Murakamis in DIVIDE AND CONQUER, which Glen didn't like. So he made me the guy in the Plasmus tank. The guy who turns into Plasmus is supposed to be me. I don't know how much it looks like me and I'm certainly not letting these guys see me in my underwear. "
"Alex Soto became the alien guy [in EVERY DOG HAD HIS DAY]. In X, there's a character named after director Michael Chang named Chang. I used Derrick Wyatt's name - one of our character designers - in ONLY HUMAN. Writer Rob Hoegee's name is in MAD MOD. And the punch line to Starfire's joke - How many Okarrans does it take to hoegee a marfilk? Finbarr! - Finbarr O'Reardan was our Art Coordinator."
"Yeah, sometimes it's easier to pull a name than to make up one. So the show is always full of the names of people that work on the show. It's fun. The two teens in CAR TROUBLE are Sammy and Cash. Sammy for Sam Register. We had the voice actor do something Sam does... when he greets you he'll go, "Aaayyy!" So if you watch CAR TROUBLE, you'll see both Sammy and Cash do that. "
Look for more cartoon cameos every week on Teen Titans!

update >> february 11 >> 2005The H.I.V.E. Mentality: A Swarm of Characters in Season Four
I recently caught up with Producer David Slack, and he revealed some plans for season four: "You know, we populated the [H.I.V.E.] school with villains, and by the end of season four, we ended up using almost all of them. So look for some of those characters to show up in season four. Because they were good designs. The guy with the eye on his chest - unless we have to change his name- he's presently called Seemore. I just used him in an upcoming episode on season four. The character with the numeral symbol on him - Billy Numerous - was named by our character designer Derrick Wyatt."
I asked specifically about the bat-like character who teleports; David responded: "Yeah, haven't gotten to him yet. There's plans, maybe in the fifth season, to break him out. Sooner or later I think we'll get to use all those characters, because I think they're fun designs. "
Look for more on season four at titanstower.com in the next few weeks.

update >> february 4 >> 2005Wizard Reveals Season Four, Raven & Slade
Wizard Magazine Magazine went straight to Tramm Wigzell - executive in charge of production at Cartoon Network - and unearthed some secrets about season four!
Here's what Wizard had to say: "In 2005, season four is going to be really dark. "It centers on Raven," teases Wigzell. "We're still doing the basic set-up: five episodes are the arc story and the rest are stand-alone episodes. But the main arc involves Raven and her family." New baddies will be introduced. But how about the long-thought-dead villain, Slade? "When you're dealing with Raven you're dealing with magic and the supernatural, so who knows what sort of undead come back?"
Look for the Raven arc to heat up in this week's episode, "Birthmark" which airs Saturday February 5th! Slade is back and this time he's after Raven. But the Teen Titans question why...

update >> january 21 >> 2005Titans East Makes Comic Book Debut
Recently in the comic book series, the Teen Titans were time-tossed 10 years in the future in TEEN TITANS (third series) #17-19 [2004]. The current team met a resistance Titans-group known as Titans East! This was the first time the name "Titans East" was actually ever used in the comic book series. Members included Cyborg, Bumblebee, Terra, Rose Wilson as Ravager, Captain Marvel Jr. and Bat-Girl. Cyborg's appearance in the future is inspired by his animated appearance. So follow this: the comic book inspired the animated series that has now inspired the comic book. All clear?

update >> january 19 >> 2005Teen Titans Tackles "The Terror of Trigon"
Season Four's story arc centers on Raven - and her father, Trigon. Producer David Slack revealed some details about the upcoming season: "That story - THE TERROR OF TRIGON - which has just been reissued in trade paperback - for my money, it's the best story that Marv and George did. Incredible artwork, a really, really interesting story... smart and emotional. So a lot of that stuff has made it into version. Of course, there's some adjustments. I wouldn't look for Lilith to show up. That just didn't work out for our version. But there's definitely some ways in which we've been really faithful to the material that will hopefully be enjoyed by all."
"It's been [a bit] difficult to adapt it. A lot of it is trying to remain true to the source material while being appropriate for your audience. In the end, it's a balancing act. And even though some of it is dark and scary, it's hopeful as well. So hopefully it balances out. And as I mentioned, we've also done some really weird funny stuff to kind of balance it out. "
So can long-time comic fans look forward to seeing Raven's mother, Arella? Or her birthplace, Azar? David is a little cagey with his response: "I can neither confirm nor deny. I will say, there is a lot of the elements [from the comics] that have been preserved. "Trigon's voice will be provided by Kevin Michael Richardson - who fans may remember from "The Batman" [as the Joker] , "Static Shock" and "Batman Beyond." How, when, where and why Trigon appears within season four is still a bit of a mystery...
Look for the Raven arc to develop in season four.

update >> january 16 >> 2005Looking Four-ward to Season Four
Season Four gets an early start on Monday, January 17th. "Don't Touch That Dial" will air at 7:30EST as part of a special marathon event! Don't miss it!Producer David Slack has provided titanstower.com with some information on what to expect in season four: "In season three and four, Rob Hoegee and Amy Wolfram came on as Story Editors and I moved up to Producer. So what that means is that I was able to not be so totally exhausted and Amy and Rob could contribute a lot more to the scripts. So we work close together - the four of us - Me, Rob, Amy and Glen. We have lunch once a week. We're in constant contact. Breaking all the stories. That's been really nice."
"I think there's a lot of exciting stuff coming up in season four. Control Freak returns. We go way, way back in time for a really cool Cyborg episode. A very exciting arc centering around Raven. There's some more Robin/Starfire romance-type stuff. And there's some cool villains returning. As well as some new ones. Some of our scariest and some of our weirdest stuff is in there. I'm really proud of them. I hope everybody will like it."
Stay tooned for more news about season four here at titanstower.com.
update >> january 14 >> 2005Titans East Roll Call
I recently caught up with Producer David Slack to ask him about how they devised the membership for Titans East. Is there any reason they didn't use existing comic book characters for Titans East - like Wildebeest, Hotspot - or even Jericho, Argent or Kole from the comics? David reveals some answers: "I forget why we didn't go with those. We know we wanted to use Speedy and Aqualad in there. We thought about Wildebeest, but then we decided against it. We kicked around a number of characters. When we originally talked about doing Mas y Menos, we talked about doing a female Flash character. We thought it might be easier to create our own. And then there's discussions about whose powers complement whose."
"There was a lot of discussion about some of those [comic book] characters. We're still looking for some opportunities to bring them in. We'd love to get our hands on a number of the other Titans. It's a question of finding the right episode for them and getting the OK from everybody."
Look for Titans East in the 2-part finale - this Saturday - appropriately titled, "Titans East."

"Bunny Raven" airs tonight! I caught up with Producer David Slack recently, who gave a hint about a few things to expect in seasons 3 and 4. A little more of the zany. It continues with this Saturday's new episode, "Bunny Raven", featuring the return of the Mumbo. David said, " We wanted to do another crazy one. Since those turned out to be some of our favorite ones, we've got two really crazy ones coming up in season three. And two coming up in season four. I haven't seen the animation back on ["Bunny Raven"] yet, but I have high hopes."
And the other wacky episode David refers to in season three was "Revolution," which has already aired. Here'd how the network describes the episode:"Bunny Raven...or How to Make a Titananimal Disappear": The Amazing Mumbo is up to his old tricks. When the Titans try to stop the madcap magician in mid-performance, Mumbo pulls a fast one. With a wave of his wand, he sucks the Titans into his hat.... where our heroes discover a strange magical world of weirdness.

update >> december 16 >> 2004All About Mas Y Menos... More or Less
Producer David Slack recently provided titanstower.com some tidbits concerning new characters Mas y Menos, who appear as members of Titans East toward the end of season three: "Ah yes, Mas y Menos. We'll wait to see what everyone thinks of them. They are two characters that we created. They're brothers. And they only speak Spanish. So that was fun. I don't know that we'd want to do a whole episode with them.... but we got a little bilingual in the show. I speak decent Spanish, but Alex Soto - our director, speaks fluent Spanish. So he was correcting my terrible translation."
Mas y Menos are the first Titans team members created specifically for the animated series - in the tradition of Wonder Twins, Firestar and Harley Quinn. David adds, "When we originally talked about doing Mas y Menos, we talked about doing a female Flash character. We thought it might be easier to create our own."
So what are their powers? "They can go really fast, but only when they're touching. They're kind of like circus acrobats. If they grab hands, zoom! If they get knocked apart, they're just little 12 year old kids. It's kind of a cross between Flash and the Wonder Twins. That's really something that Sam [Register], Glen [Murakami] and the whole group cooked up. the great thing about TITANS is that it's really just a pot-luck. Everyone brings something. It's a real group effort that everybody kicks in something extra. And I think that's part of why the show is so much fun to work on."
update >> december 13 >> 2004Unused Designs: The Robin Solo Series
Did you know the boy wonder was close to having series of his very own? It's true! Robin almost got a solo animated series after the success of BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES. The Robin series would have detailed the boy wonder's heroic exploits as he juggled fighting crime with a college career. TEEN TITANS producer Glen Murakami even worked up some Robin redesigns for the series. The series was in development, but the FOX network ultimately passed on it. To see Glen's unused designs, click here.
You can always see these designs in the Art & Design section at this site.

update >> december 7 >> 2004Teen Titans Co-Creator Bob Haney Passes Away
Comic Book Legend Bob Haney has passed away.
Newsarama reports: "It has been learned that comics legend Bob Haney died on Thanksgiving Day, November 25th. He was 78 years old. [...] Haney was one of the great Silver Age comics writers, landing at DC in the mid-50s, where he soon came to write virtually every comic DC published at one time or another. Haney was the co-creator of the original Teen Titans, Metamorpho, Eclipso, Doom Patrol, and an array of other characters, including Sgt. Rock."
Bob Haney wrote the very first appearances of the Teen Titans in the 1960s. Bob Haney and artist Nick Cardy gave a unique flavor to the Teen Titans in the initial run of the book. To relive those early days, check out the early years section in the library.
Hanye also wrote a Teen Titans Swingin' Elseworlds Special [with art by Jay Stephens] that was scheduled to hit the stands last year. The special was mysteriously shelved. To read about the Swingin' Special, click here. I encourage everyone to contact DC Comics here and politely ask for the Special to see print. It's a fitting tribute to Bob Haney Titanic legacy.
update >> december 3 >> 2004Fanboy Radio Interviews Glen Murakami and Michael Chang

When asked about the future of Teen Titans beyond the initial 52 episodes, Glen had this to say: "We're just going to keep making them - for as long as we can make them." Hopefully, that's another positive sign that season five may be a go.
update >> december 2 >> 2004The Return of Speedy
Speedy will be returning as part of the Titans East team towards the end of the season. Producer David Slack revealed how the animated version of the character was conceived: "With Speedy, we were looking for someone to mirror Robin. For the purpose of that episode, we wanted someone to go up against Robin. And Speedy ends up having some of the same problems Robin has. He's got kind of a dippy name, he shoots... arrows. [laughs] So there's stuff about him that's not all that cool. I think we managed to make him pretty cool. And we did that the same way we did with Robin. We searched for some more contemporary ways for him to express himself."
So will Speedy be the same guy we knew and loved in WINNER TAKE ALL? Sort of; David explains, "When we bring back Speedy at the end of season three, we have a slightly different take on his character. We nudged him a bit more gruff direction." At that point, I mentioned how Speedy was the perennial 'bad boy' of the original team. David agreed, "Yeah. Exactly. We sort of played more into the whole bad boy thing when we brought him back. "
Look for Speedy to return towards the end of the season – in the 2-part finale “Titans East.”

update >> november 19 >> 2004Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi Premiere!
The girls behind the TEEN TITANS rockin' theme song are getting their own animated series! HI HI PUFFY AMI YUMI launches Friday, November 19th from 7:30pm-8:00pm EST. "We have an order for 26 episodes and hope to have more," Sam Register said. "We'll just put the stuff out and see how it goes."
The Pulse reports: "I knew I wanted to do something with them, so we did some development for what I thought would be an Adult Swim series," continued Register. "We went in that direction and, while we were doing the Puffy pilot, we were working on the Teen Titans show. The Teen Titans were so anime influenced, when the time came I encouraged Glen Murakami to listen to the band, told him about the pilot and how that might not happen, but thought we should get the girls to do the Teen Titans theme song. He was all into it, so we went ahead and had them do the song." For more on how Puffy was brought to tv, read the full article here.

update >> october 21 >> 2004The Buzz on Bumblebee
Bumblebee returns in this week's episode, "Wavelength"; Animation Insider recently chatted with Producer/Story Editor David Slack, who dropped some interesting tidbits about Bumblebee. Originally a character that joined the Titans in the 1970’s comic book, Bumblebee makes her animated debut this season. Take it away, David: “Well, the first thing [comic book writer] Marv Wolfman told me when I told him we were using Bumblebee was "Please dont let her shoot stingers out of her butt." [laughs] Early on, it was uncertain which characters we could use. But Bumblebee stood out. Not only was she a Titans character, but her name was dumb enough we were almost positive no one wanted it. “
“So we started kicking around the idea of bringing Bumblebee in. I think our heroines are some of the best characters, and I know we have a lot of female fans - young and old - of the show. And I think that's great. I think one of my favorite things about our female characters if that they're not "Lara Croft" - which is essentially a guy in a girl's body. They're feminine. I think that's cool. At the comic conventions, it's always fun... girls come up and they're excited about a boy's action cartoon show. So if there was a Titans East, I wanted there to be at least one girl member.”
“So we worked on Bumblebee in terms of who she was, and came up with something that would contrast Cyborg well, since she's got some scenes with him in an upcoming episode. We revised her powers a little bit. She's coming up in an episode called WAVELENGTH. We'll see what everyone think of her; I hope they like her as much as I do. I think she came out really well. “
Look for Bumblebee in this week’s upcoming episode, “Wavelength.” Here's how the network describes the episode: Brother Blood is back. And this time, it's personal. Cyborg learns that Blood stole his blueprints - and the villain is using Cy's technology to create a doomsday device. Can Cyborg take charge of the team and lead a mission to stop his arch-enemy? Or will he even get the chance?
update >> october 19 >> 2004The Birth Of Brother Blood
Animation Insider recently caught up with Producer/Story Editor David Slack about using Brother Blood in the series. As many know, the comic book character was the leader of a cult and bathed in blood... hardly fodder for an animated series geared towards kids.
David explains, "Obviously, the Brother Blood conceived in the comics is a LOT scarier than our Brother Blood. There was a lot of challenges that came with that. Brother Blood went through a lot of permutations. At one point we were writing him like a coach, because that was someone Cyborg could respond to. In the end, we tried to make him the anti-Slade. Where Slade hides in the shadows, Brother Blood loves the spotlight. Slade always has some ulterior motive, Brother Blood will tell you what he's planning right away. So there's some contrast there. We wanted it to be a lighter, more fun, more James Bond, science-fiction-y kind or arc. I haven't seen all the animation, but what we've gotten back looks like we got that. There's a lot of fun stuff coming up."
"We weren’t even sure we'd get to use that name. I think what was important that we kept was that he was the leader of a cult. We kept that role and drew inspiration from cult leaders we read about. They are very charming seeming people. From that, we gave him this sort of 'power of temptation' - this ability to control people's perceptions. And the power of persuasion. We didn’t get too deep into the character from the comics, because so much of it was so outside of what we'd be able to do. He's definitely one where we've strayed more."
Look for Brother Blood's arc to heat up during season three. Brother Blood appears next in "Wavelength", which airs this Saturday.

update >> october 18 >> 2004Wil Wheaton Returns to a "Seriously Cool" Aqualad
Wil Wheaton posted some news on season finale of season three, titled "Titans East." The episodes feature the debut of Titans East - whose membership includes Bumblebee, Speedy, Mas Y Menos and Aqualad [voiced by Wil Wheaton]. Wil posted on his site - www.wilwheaton.net - the following blurb on October 18th: "The weekend was awesome. I started out with some ADR work on Teen Titans Friday morning, for Titans East Parts One and Two... holy [expletive deleted]. It's no secret that I love Teen Titans, and it's no secret that I'm fiercely proud of my work there... but holy [expletive deleted]. The episodes just keep getting better and better, and this story arc is the best I've been in so far. It's dark, it's a little scary, and the animation is SO FREAKING COOL! I actually had my very first "cool, dry superhero" line on Friday. I got to say, "Something tells me you guys don't like water... " right before I... uh, I mean, Aqualad does some seriously cool superhero stuff. I can't wait to see this episode when it airs."
update >> october 14 >> 2004"Revolution" Episode Details
Mad Mod is back! Producer David Slack reveals a little about Moddie's return: "After we did the first Mad Mod episode, I told [Producer] Glen [Murakami] I didn't want to do another one with him. Not to say that I won't. But his episodes are always the hardest. They're the hardest to get to work. But Mad Mod returns in season three. And we're all very happy with the way that one looks. John Esposito wrote that one - and Rob Hoegee and I co-story-edited that one. That one came back looking cool. I hope everyone likes it."
"Revolution" airs this Saturday. Here's how the network describes the episode: The Titans' Fourth of July festivities are cut short when Mad Mod crashes the party, declaring the American Revolution is a hoax and reclaiming the city for Jolly Old England. If that wasn't enough, old Mod uses his high-tech cane to steal Robin's youth, making "King Moddie" young again while Robin turns into a withered dried up old man.

update >> october 7 >> 2004"Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi" Launches November 19th

Below are images from the series.Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi follows the adventures of two very cool, but very different, pop stars as they travel from gig to gig or just hang out in their hometown, Tokyo. Being famous rock stars, Ami and Yumi tour the globe in their customized Puffy bus, a veritable condo on wheels with all the major amenities and an ever-changing interior. Ami is the peppy, positive and resourceful one. Yumi is the hard-rocking, no-nonsense cynic with an absolutely infallible sense of cool.
Together, these superstars take the world by storm with musical talent, trend-setting style and humor, despite occasional misjudgments from their well-meaning but tragically square manager, Kaz. Whether they’re jamming with aliens, being chased to the center of the earth by an obsessed fan or getting knocked into a video game by a tsunami, Ami and Yumi always come out on top - dishing out lessons in J-pop justice and the international language of “cool” along the way.
update >> october 5 >> 2004The Agony and the X
How and why was Red X brought back in the recent episode "X"? Those answers prove as elusive as the character himself. But an insider provided at least some clues. "Breaking X off as his own character was actually Sam Register's idea. And it was really hard to find a way to make that idea work," my source informed me. "We're presently discussing when and how to bring him back."
I pressed a bit further, inquiring whether Red X's identity will eventually be revealed. To that, the reply I received was, "As for his identity... if I had wanted you to know that, he wouldn't be wearing a mask." An answer worth a vial of zinothium.
update >> october 1 >> 2004"Haunted" Episode Details
A new episode of TEEN TITANS airs this Saturday. "Haunted" is written by Adam Beechen ["Mad Mod"] and directed by new series director Ben Jones ["X"]. The episode features Cinderblock and... the return of Slade? Series producer David Slack hinted about this episode at the San Diego ComiCon. Slade had been apparently killed in "Aftershock, part two"... if they were going to do another Slade episode, the staff wanted to make sure if they 'brought Slade back', it would be a worthy return. Does that mean Slade is alive? Watch the episode and find out!
Here's how the network describes "Haunted": Ever since the Titans final confrontation with Slade, Robin has been haunted by one question: Is Slade really gone? When Cinderblock breaks out of jail, Robin finally gets his answer: he sees Slade. Robin goes after him, determined to stop his nemesis once and for all. "Haunted" airs this Saturday.

I must say, I'm pretty happy with this DVD overall. The standard retail price is $19.99, but you should be able to find it on sale for about $14.99. For six episodes and some decent extras, that's fair. Hopefully, it will follow with a volume two containing the remainder of season one. The highlight is the "Comics Creations" extra... a behind the scenes look at the show that clocks in at 21 minutes. To see a complete overview with screencaps, check out the DVD Overview.

Saturday, October 9th at 8:00pm EST: Spellbound [episode 32]: There's no one else quite like Raven: dark, somber and undeniably creepy. Even with four friends around her, Raven still manages to feel alone at Titans Tower... until she discovers a charming young Wizard named Malchior trapped inside one of her ancient books.
Saturday, October 16th at 8:00pm EST: Revolution [episode 33]: The Titans' Fourth of July festivities are cut short when Mad Mod crashes the party, declaring the American Revolution is a hoax and reclaiming the city for Jolly Old England. If that wasn't enough, old Mod uses his high-tech cane to steal Robin's youth, making "King Moddie" young again while Robin turns into a withered dried up old man.
Saturday, October 23rd at 8:00pm EST: Wavelength [episode 34]: Brother Blood is back. And this time, it's personal. Cyborg learns that Blood stole his blueprints - and the villain is using Cy's technology to create a doomsday device. Can Cyborg take charge of the team and lead a mission to stop his arch-enemy? Or will he even get the chance?
Saturday, October 30th at 8:00pm EST: The Beast Within [episode 35]: When Beast Boy begins turning into angry and aggresive Man-Beast against his will, can the Titans save themselves from their savage friend?

update >> september 16>> 2004"Crash" Episode Details
Animation Insider has learned that "Crash" is written by Rick Copp ["Switched" and "Date With Destiny "] and directed by Michael Chang ["Nevermore" and "Masks"]. Look for Beast Boy to learn a lesson as the rest of the team tries to stop Cyborg from running amok through Jump City. This episode is also an homage to the classic sci-fi tale, "Fantastic Voyage" - where a group of adventurers shrink down to microscopic size and travel inside a man's body.
Here's the official logline: "Crash": When Beast Boy mistakes Cyborg's system recharger for a video game system, he accidentily infects it with a nasty computer virus. The virus quickly spreads to Cyborg himself, causing the half-teen-half-machine to go haywire. The only way to stop the virus is to shrink down to microscopic size and go in on a fantastic voyage inside Cyborg.
update >> september 15 >> 2004Waiting for Word: Season Five
So what’s the word on season five? Animation Insider recently caught up with TEEN TITANS Producer/Story Editor David Slack. Presently, TEEN TITANS is renewed for four seasons, with a total of 52 episodes. I asked David about the possibility of a fifth season. He revealed: "We don't know about a fifth season yet. There's still a lot of ideas out there that we'd like to do. Spare parts. Things that you'd say "Oh, wouldn't it be cool if we did this." Stuff that we weren't quite able to figure out how they'd work. For example, in season four we finally figured out how to do an episode I've wanted to do since season one. Right now things are flowing pretty good and we'd all love to do more. So we're all waiting. "
I expressed some concern over the "52-episode rule". Today, if an animated series has 52 episodes. they consider it enough for daily viewing. Is there a profitable reason to go back for more? David mentioned, "I'm not sure how that works. The shows I've worked on have been atypical. BIG GUY AND RUSTY THE BOY ROBOT was supposed to get picked up, but didn't, because of a changing of the guard. But then JACKIE CHAN has over 90 episodes... which is a huge number. But TEEN TITANS is doing well. Hopefully Cartoon Network will want more. Basically I just get a call, and they say "Hey, want to do more?" and I get working. I think we have legs to go beyond 52. I think we're all hopeful. "
So with season one focused of Robin, season two on Beast Boy, Cyborg for season three and Raven for season four... where does that leave our favorite Tamaranean Titan? I asked that very question: Will Starfire get gypped out of a season arc? "But you know what?" David said, "She has the best one-off episodes. That's actually the reason we haven't done a Starfire arc. Between SISTERS, HOW LONG IS FOREVER, SWITCHED and some of the upcoming stuff . I don't know how she gets that lucky. BETROTHED is a tremendous amount of fun. She's such a great character."
Here's two other tidbits I've uncovered that would make Robin's brain work overtime: The season ender for season four is titled "The End." But.... an insider informs me that a season five order may mean more than the usual 13-episode order. Puzzle that one out, boy wonders. When a decision is made for season five, it'll be sure to be reported in this space. Stay tooned!

update >> september 7 >> 2004"Betrothed" Episode Details
A new episode of TEEN TITANS airs this Saturday featuring Starfire. Here's how the network describes the episode:
Betrothed [episode 29]: The Teen Titans take a trip to Starfire's home planet, Tamaran. But this is no ordinary visit: The Grand Ruler of Tamaran has arranged for Starfire to be married! The Titans try to go along with the strange ways of Starfire's homeworld, but Robin has a hard time believing that Starfire really wants to marry someone she's never met.
Look for the episode to feature the return of Starfire's sister, who last appeared in season one's "Sisters." It's also interesting to note that in the comic book series, Starfire was summoned back to Tamaran to enter into a marriage of state to keep the peace between two factions. "Betrothed" is written by Amy Wolfram ["Sisters" and "Terra", among others] directed by Alex Soto ["How Long Is Forever" and "Transformation"]. Insiders tell us it's another stellar Star episode.

update >> september 2 >> 2004X Marks The Spot This Saturday
This Saturday features the debut of the new episode, "X". Here's how the network describes the episode: When the Titans track down the culprit of a string of recent robberies, our heroes are shocked to find themselves facing the foe they never thought they'd see again: Robin's evil alter-ego, Red X. Is Robin to blame for Red X's crimes?
At San Diego ComiCon, we were treated to a few minutes from the episode "X". [Slight spoilers follow...] One of the Titans comments "I thought Robin was Red X".... as he systematically takes down the team in Red X fashion. Robin demands, "Who are you?" and Red X answers, "If I wanted you to know, I wouldn't have worn a mask." Red X even says to Starfire, "I wonder why I never asked YOU out on a date." But before Robin can subdue him, he disappears. This is followed by a hilarious sequence where the Titans make sure Robin isn't a hologram. Cyborg's method of detection drew much laughter. For more on Red X, don't miss this week's episode!
update >> august 29 >> 2004Blink and You Missed Bumblebee
Bumblebee made her debut in the episode "Deception" in a quick camera pan. Readers may recall that Bumblebee is appearing as a request from NEW TEEN TITANS co-creator George Pérez, who drew the classic comic book series. Sam Register [from Cartoon Network] noted in a recent interview: "There was one other thing that came from George. We are thinking of mining the other Titans to use as auxillary members, [and I asked], Is there anyone you would like us to use? and he did mention Bumblebee. So Bumblebee will be coming to the animated Titans as a request from George."

Marv Wolfman commented on the animated Terra on his Today's Views; The conclusion to season two featured the conclusion of the Judas Contract arc. Marv had this to say [excerpt]: "Because of last night's moving episode of The Teen Titans cartoon show on Cartoon Network, I've been getting a lot of emails asking me to bring back Terra in one way or another. It reminds me of when we did the original version of that story 20+ years ago. Terra then, and now, elicited a lot of strong feelings, including one death threat. But Terra in the comics is dead and has been (the 2nd Terra who appeared in Team Titans, was clearly and honestly described as a girl who had been kidnapped and brainwashed into thinking she was Terra and the Titans were led, through duplicity, to believe that she was the original. Red X Returns, Season Four News... and moreJust a quick update from the sunny streets of San Diego. The DC Animated Panel was held today, featuring previews of Teen Titans, Justice League Unlimited and The Batman. "Teen Titans" was greeted with raucous applause. The writers of the show were in attendance, along with Tara [Raven] Strong, Ron [Slade] Pearlman and Greg [Beast Boy] Cipes.
We saw a preview of the season three episode "X" [which airs September 4th] - which features the return of Red X. But isn't Robin Red X? Not this time! Now there's a whole new mystery behind the identity of Red X. Also look for Blackfire to return... and I also spotted a blink-and-you'll-miss-it glimpse at Brother Blood. Slade is also set to return in season three. And look for the fourth season to focus on Raven.... which could mean Trigon as well!
Lots more scoop and pictures coming this week! Stay tooned!

Season Three Brings Brother Blood and Titans East!
Animation Insider has some exciting news to share concerning season three of TEEN TITANS, which begins at the end of August! My sources have hinted at a few things to expect in in the next season. First, there's a new villain in town - but one familiar to long-time comic book readers - Brother Blood! Look for Brother Blood to propel a season-long arc for the next batch of 13 episodes. Blood, however, will be toned back from his comic-book counterpart, who was a fanatical religious zealot that bathed in a river of blood. Instead, the animated Blood will have other aspects of the character emphasized, such as his charismatic sway over the young and directionless.
The other exciting bit of news is the debut of a brand new Titans team: Titans East! Comic book readers recall the Titans West auxillary team... and this follows that proud tradition of East/West Titans teams. So who will be on Titans East? Look for Bumblebee, a couple of returning Titans who will thrill fans, and a couple of brand-new characters. Looks like Season Three will be full of excitement and surprises! Stay tuned for more information about season three soon!
Season Three begins Saturday, Aug. 28 with the episode, "Deception."

First Teen Titans DVD Scheduled for September Release
The always-excellent tvshowsondvd.com reports that Teen Titans is scheduled for DVD release in September... the good news? Six episodes per disk! This gives me hope that two disks will comprise an entire season [a la Samauri Jack].
"Besides a heads-up in early March, and a minor update a few weeks later, we haven't heard a peep since out of Warner about Teen Titans on DVD. But now Diamond Previews has posted this info about the release. Frankly, our track record with accuracy on their announcements hasn't been the best, but we've heard enough gossip from other sources to make us think this one's fairly on-target:
TEEN TITANS - DIVIDE AND CONQUER
From Warner Home Video Inc.! Fighting for truth, justice, and the last piece of pizza! A new generation of super-heroes comes to life as Robin leads Cyborg, Beast Boy, Starfire, and Raven in this all-new, high-octane animated series! "Jonny DC" Returns to Host Young Readers Comics
From the latest DC Comics Direct Channel newsletter:
"This July, DC Comics' mascot Johnny DC makes his first comic book appearance in years on the cover of the Free Comic Book Day edition of TEEN TITANS GO! #1 (APR040018). The issue marks the start of a comeback for the character, who will appear on DC's all-ages titles beginning in September (and with the solicitation for those titles in the July issue of Previews, Volume XIV #7).
The new version of the character has been designed by Rian Hughes, noted designer and illustrator.
"We're working hard to make comics that are fun for new and younger readers," says Dan DiDio, DC's VP Editorial. "We are introducing the new Johnny DC as the mascot of the kids' line to host the newly reinstated letters pages that encourage kids to write in and interact with our characters.""I'm a huge fan of Rian's work, and he's really outdone himself with this design," says Mark Chiarello, DC's Editorial Art Director.
"The new Johnny DC has a bright, distinctive look that will really stand out in the stores."
Following the Free Comic Book Day edition of TEEN TITANS GO! #1 (APR040018), Johnny DC will appear in these September in-store titles:* BATMAN STRIKES #1

Justice League "Starcrossed" Offers Titans-Related Goodies
Cartoon Network aired the finale to the Justice League series as we know it with "Starcrossed". In that episode, we see the first animated appearance of the alien conquering race, The Gordanians. Starfire alluded to the Gordanians in the TEEN TITANS episode, "Sisters." Longtime Titans fans know that Starfire was a slave to the Gordanians for years before the Titans rescued her.
Also, Wally West is confirmed as the secret identity of Flash - and appears unmasked for the first time in the series. Readers of the Titans comic know that Wally West was a long-time Titan as Kid Flash, before assuming the Flash identity at the death of his mentor.
Lastly, The end credits featured the first preview of JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED, which premieres August 7th. JLU will feature Hawk & Dove, who were shown briefly in the preview. Hawk & Dove were members of the Teen Titans in the 1970s. For all these images, click here!

Tramm Wigzell Talks TEEN TITANS and more
Tramm Wigzell is an old school comic book fan who's been working at the Cartoon Network for a little over two years on some of their coolest superhero related projects. The Pulse at down with him to talk about JUSTICE LEAGUE, and he had this to say about TEEN TITANS:
Although this was mainly a chat about Justice League Unlimited, THE PULSE couldn't help but press Wigzell for a few details about Teen Titans, especially a question that most viewers have been wondering since day one: just who is this Robin? "Robin is Peter Parker," Wigzell said seriously, before busting out in laughter. "One of the best things about Titans is we're not married to continuity, so who's to say which heroes it will and won't be. That's not really important! But there's an episode coming up where that question may be answered, if you pay really close attention!"
"Seriously," continued Wigzell. "It's important to us to show Robin's a bad*ss not some wussy kid going 'holey this!' every second. He's cool. He kicks *ss and takes names. He's a leader. We've finally shown people that Robin is a force to be reckoned with." Another question most are curious about is when/if we'll see Wonder Girl or Kid Flash - especially since CN looking versions of those characters have appeared online. "I can tell you those Wonder Girl and Kid Flash images are not official pictures. Those were fan pictures!
As for Titan icons who may appear in the cartoon, you'll note this past season we saw Speedy and Wildebeast and a few other characters. I can also say Aqualad will be back next season. But we won't be making up a lot of teen heroes to feature in this series."

Teen Titans Final Four Episodes Rescheduled
Bad news for Titans fans looking forward to the final four episodes airing May 5th and 6th: The wait is going to be even longer. The two-part season finale ["Aftershock"] will air in the summer - and episodes "Betrayal" and "Fractured" have yet to be scheduled. But the month of May now has no new episodes scheduled at all.
My source had this to say: "My understanding now is that the last two episodes of this season are going to air immediately before the premiere of JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED this summer... sort of a ratings-grabber to get more viewers to sample the new program." "Betrayal" and "Fractured" will presumably air before the season finale.
Initially, the final four episodes were scheduled for May 5th and 6th and appeared as such on the Cartoon Network program grid. In the past week, reruns appeared in place of the new episodes. I'm not sure the reason for the change - perhaps there was already enough new program and events scheduled for May; The network likes an influx of new programming all year round. Also, It's not my policy to publish rumors and speculation, so I consulted with one of my sources to discover the true scheduling plans. I just learned for sure that the episodes are indeed rescheduled.
More programming news as it develops. As soon as I learn when the new episodes will air, you'll all be the first to know.

"Winner Take All" Episode Details and Preview Images
Animation Insider has been provided some information on the episode, "Winner Take All," which airs March 6th. This is the first animated appearance of Speedy, Joto and Wildebeest.... all characters from the Teen Titans comics. Look for Speedy [described by creators as "Robin with a bow"] to have a one-on-one battle with Robin. Joto is renamed Hot Spot for the series. And Wildebeest will be a combination of the various versions of Wildebeest in the comics; He will be a teenager though, unlike the 'Baby' Wildebeest character that was a Titan.
The episode is written by Dwayne McDuffie ["Fear Itself"]. This is Dwayne's second Teen Titans script. It was originally called "It's How You Play The Game" but it was retitled "Winner Take All."
Aqualad's voice will be reprised by Wil Weaton and Speedy will be voiced by Mike Erwin [Mike played the Teenage Bruce Banner in the 2003 movie, "HULK," based on the comic book character; He also has a recurring role as Colin Hart in WB's "Everwood"]
For preview images of this long-awaited episode, click here
Here's the official logline: ROBIN, CYBORG, and BEAST BOY are transported to an alternate dimension. There, the mysterious MASTER OF GAMES invites our heroes and five other superpowered teens (AQUALAD, SPEEDY, GIZMO, JOTO, and WILDEBEEST) to participate in a friendly competition: THE TOURNAMENT OF HEROES. As the contest rages on, Robin becomes more and more determined to win -- while Cyborg becomes more and more worried about what happens to the losers after they disappear. Will Robin realize that winning isn't everything before he loses the only thing that matters: his friends?

The Batman Sneak Peek
Not Titans related, but very cool.
WB and Cartoon Network posted a World Premiere Press Conference in New York City on February 25th. For the first time, The Batman series was unveiled to the public. For those who were concerned about the series: Don't be. Rino Romano is perfect as the voice of Batman... a dark whispered broodiness. Gina Gershon's purr is perfect. And Kevin Michael Richardson does psychotic justice to the Joker.
The animation is very fluid and edgy. The series seems to be a mix of classic Batman and Batman Beyond with some Aeon Flux thrown in. It will also feature Batman's first encounters with his adversaries - including his first battle with the Joker.
Here's how the network describes the series: "The Batman picks up Batman' s story in year three: in his mid-twenties, just finding his way as protector, defender and Caped Crusader, while balancing his public persona as billionaire bachelor Bruce Wayne. Living in Gotham, a metropolis where shadows run long and deep, beneath elevated train tracks, this younger Batman will confront updated takes of familiar foes Ñ meeting each member of his classic Rogue's Gallery for the first time. From the likes of Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, Riddler and Man-Bat, among others, the war on crime jumps to the next level with a new arsenal at the Dark Knight's disposal, all operated and linked by an advanced remote-controlled invention he dubs the "Bat-Wave." Accentuating the original take on The Batman, The Edge from multi-Grammy Award-winning sensation U2 will perform the series' theme song. The Batman is produced by Warner Bros. Animation for Kids' WB! and Cartoon Network."

Puffy AmiYumi Gets New Animated Series in December
The group that sings the TEEN TITANS theme song is getting their own animated series!
Cartoon Network announced that the Japanese pop group Puffy AmiYumi would be getting their own animated series - Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi. In the musical TV tradition of the Monkees, Partridge Family and Josie and the Pussycats, Hi Puffy AmiYumi. follows the musical misadventures of Ami and Yumi. Sam Register [senior vice president, original animation for Cartoon Network} described the series as "Hello Kitty meets Led Zeppelin."
Here's how the network describes the series: "One of Japan's biggest pop music acts arrives in America, not with a massive stadium tour but as a cartoon. Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, set to debut in December, follows the adventures of two very cool, but very different, pop stars as they travel from gig to gig or just hang out in their hometown of Tokyo. Ami is the peppy, positive and resourceful one. Yumi is the hard-rocking, no-nonsense cynic with an absolutely infallible sense of cool. Together, they take the world by storm, despite occasional misjudgments from their well-meaning but tragically square manager, Kaz. Hi Hi Puff' Ami Yumi also will feature live-action segments starring the real life Puffy AmiYumi as well as the group's catchy J-pop hits."

Marv Wolfman writes an episode for Season Three
Marv Wolfman wrote the New Teen Titans comic book from 1980-1996. His New Teen Titans series served as the inspiration for the animated series. Marv wrote the season one episode, "Deep Six", which introduced Aqualad. Marv is returning to pen a script in season three.
In Marv's weblog: Today's Views at his website, he talked about his current projects. Check out his site to see what he's up to. "Today's Views is an irregular weblog updated when there are new fun things to report. Keep checking in. "
Here's what he said about the new script: "I'm starting work on an outline for the new episode of the TEEN TITANS animated series, season three. I can't say anything specific about it, but I think the story David Slack, the Titans' story-editor and I hashed out has the potential to be really fun. While I was at Warner's, I also picked up my Titans crew jacket (way cool) and learned that the Titans is the Cartoon Network's number one rated show. Could I be more proud?"

"Fear Itself" Episode Details
Animation Insider has learned that "Fear Itself" is written by Dwayne McDuffie. This is Dwayne's first TEEN TITANS script.

He is also still continuing to work on the show, which is now on it's second season, and has produced incredibly strong ratings as well.

New Teen Titans Adventures to Air on Cartoon Network in February
New Episodes Begin Saturday, Feb. 7, at 9 p.m. (ET, PT) The Teen Titans deal with their surging hormones and belligerent bad guys in four new, exciting adventures set to air every Saturday in Feb. at 9 p.m. (ET, PT), beginning Feb. 7.
Like most teens, Robin, Cyborg, Beast Boy, Raven and Starfire love hanging out with their friends, playing video games and going to parties. Besides trying to find their place in the world, these teens have to fight off evil and crime at the same time.
Raven finally shows a side of her that isn't so fearless after all, and Robin is forced to go to the junior prom. Also, the mysterious Terra returns, this time seeking acceptance into the Teen Titan clique, but not everyone is willing to give her a second chance. Episodes to air on Saturdays at 9 p.m. (ET, PT) and replay the following Sundays at 10 p.m. (ET, PT) include the following:
* Saturday, Feb. 7: "Fear Itself" - Raven appears to be immune to fear, but when a ghostly, unknown force starts hunting down the Titans in their own tower, even Raven gets rattled.
* Saturday, Feb. 14: "Date With Destiny" - A creepy criminal known as Killer Moth threatens to destroy the city with a flying army of mutant moths unless Robin takes his spoiled-rotten teen-age daughter, Kitten, to her junior prom. So while the other Titans are scouring the city in search of Moth's secret hideout, a reluctant Robin has no choice but to endure his date with destiny.
* Saturday, Feb. 21: "Transformation" - Starfire has never thought much about her looks, but when a red bump appears on her forehead, she starts to notice. Raven tells her it is probably just a zit, but when Starfire starts to grow tusks scales and claws, the teens begin to wonder if she is actually transforming into an ugly, hideous monster.
* Saturday, Feb. 28: "Teen Rising" - Terra returns with the intention of becoming a full-fledged member of the team, but after what happened the last time, everyone has doubts. Raven has the most apprehension, but Robin reminds her that everyone deserves a second chance.
Teen Titans has become quickly become one of Cartoon Network's most popular originals since its debut in July 2003. The show averaged double-digit growth across all demos at the end of 2003, and the second season, which began in January, has performed well repeating ratings as the #1 telecast of the week on Cartoon Network with kids 6-11, kids 2-11, boys 6-11 and boys 2-11. Cartoon Network, currently seen in 86.2 million U.S. homes and 145 countries around the world, is Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.'s 24-hour, ad-supported cable service offering the best in animated entertainment.

TEEN TITANS Renewed Through It's Fourth Season
Marv Wolfman, who wrote the TEEN TITANS comic book for 16 years, recapped his history writing the popular comic book. You can read the whole article by clicking here.
Marv mentions the TEEN TITANS cartoon has been ordered for 4 full seasons! "The Titans have also become a major animated series appearing on both The Cartoon Network and The WB. It seems to be a hit and has been renewed through its fourth season."
This makes sense if they plan to eventually strip for daily airings. Each season is presumably comprised of 13 episodes. That would make 52 episodes total for a four-season renewal. This is great news, because it means that the creative staff can plan on spreading out the introduction of new chaaracters and story arcs. For more information, stay tooned to Animation Insider.

Marv Wolfman would like to write another episode, from http://www.marvwolfman.com:
[click on links to learn more about the characters Marv is talking about...]"I'd like to thank everyone who has been sending emails telling me how much they enjoyed my story for this week's Teen Titans cartoon. I'm hoping to do more, so keep your fingers crossed. As pleased as I am with the aired Titans story, and even more so with your reaction to it, I find it weird that, for the last number of years, whenever I'm assigned an animated script I'm more often than not asked to write stories that feature monsters when, in fact, I usually don't enjoy writing them at all."
"As for the Titans, when/if I get a chance to write more episodes, I'd love to use one of my better human villains, Slade or - is there anyway to put him in this series - Brother Blood? Wouldn't mind using The Omega Men, either. I created them (with artist Joe Staton), wrote their first half dozen or so appearances, but, because of time, had to opt out from writing the comic. How cool would they be? "

Marv Wolfman on DEEP SIX
Marv Wolfman talks about his thoughts on DEEP SIX, from http://www.marvwolfman.com:
"Deep Six," my episode of the Teen Titans animated show, aired tonight and, guest-starring Aqualad, it looks pretty decent. It is, obviously, very strange for me to watch this show because it bears so little resemblance to the comic I did for sixteen years, yet, beneath the anime facade the characters, taken to very cartoony extremes, are actually emotionally similar to the originals. SPOILER WARNING! The concept of the episode was handed to me - Trident, who bears absolutely no similarity to the original I did way back when (three 'super' thieves who the Titans believe is actually one man) is now an underwater monster of some sort who is cloning himself. Still, I find myself laughing at the Raven/Changeling (oops, Beast Boy) exchanges and the Starfire naivetee, though I could do without Cyborg's Boolyahh exclamations.
It is always strange to see your own stuff on the screen, though generally I've liked what they've done with my creations. Blade has been quite good, and very much Blade. Bullseye was wonderful, the very best thing about the Daredevil movie. Cat Grant on "Lois And Clark" was letter perfect, and the various actors who have played Professor Hamilton have all done a good job. In terms of cartoons, I've seen Nova, Black Cat and many of my other characters appear here and there, and none of them are too embarrassing. The Titans strays the farthest from what I did, but because it has its own internal logic and is true to itself, I can deal with it. What I don't like is when folk try to do what George and I did but miss. I'd much rather see a complete re-interpretation than a bad xerox. if you haven't seen the Titans animated show on Cartoon Network, and if you can put aside the obvious anime changes, you might find yourself smiling at it. It's weird, but cute.

"Apprentice" Details
An animation insider has revealed some details about the season ending two-parter, "Apprentice." It is written by David Slack ["Sum of his Parts" and "Divide and Conquer"] and directed by Michael Chang ["Final Exam" and Nevermore"]. It appears that some of this season's subplots will be resolved as Slade is the featured villain along with Cinderblock. The two-parter will at last reveal why Slade hates the Teen Titans.
UPDATE: DC Message Board poster eyesofjericho revealed this: "I watched a screener of Episode 12 ("The Apprentice, Part 1") and have to give it "two thumbs up"! It's possibly the best episode of the series so far. It focuses mostly on Robin and Slade's ultimate plan -- look at the episode title again for a hint -- but the team also gets a lot of screen time. There was action (Robin vs. Slade), tension (intra-team conflicts) and drama (Robin's final decision). The action sequences were the best so-far -- a nice mix of U.S. and Japan influences (Amerime, perhaps?). Slade sounds sinister (thanks, Ron [Pearlman]) and looks great. His costume is a combination of his classic '80s look (face mask) and his most recent look (black costume with some armor). I'm looking forward to the conclusion."

Episode 10 Details
An animation insider has revealed some details about episode 10 of the series. The episode known as "Detention" may be renamed "Mad Mod." The episode features The Mad Mod, a very old villain from the Bob Haney/ Nick Cardy 1960's TEEN TITANS comic book series. The episode is written by Adam Beechen ["Forces of Nature"] and directed by Ciro Nieli ["Forces of Nature"].
Mad Mod is voiced by Malcolm McDowell. Look for a few hidden references to CLOCKWORK ORANGE, the groundbreaking movie that starred McDowell as a ultra-violent cockny criminal in the near-future.
Here's an episode description: The Titans awake to find themselves captured as prisoners of Mad Mod, a madcap bad guy in a psychedelic suit. Mad Mod has decided to teach the teens a lesson, creating a massive mind-bending school full of optical illusions and brain-washing hypno-screens. More Guest Stars In Season Two
I talked to a source close to the production of TEEN TITANS, who dropped some hints about what to expect in Season Two of TEEN TITANS, which is already in production. Expect to see more comic-book Titans to appear on the small screen - including Speedy, Wildebeest and others. The staff of TEEN TITANS looks to incorporate a good number of guest stars using the comic book source material.
My source also revealed an upcoming season two episode will feature old-time Titans adversary, the Mad Mod, who will be voiced by Malcolm McDowell. Also, season two will run a season-long story arc inspired by one of the classic Titans comic book tales. Which one? Too early to reveal but my source promised, "It's gonna rock!"

Wednesday, July 2, 2003
by RobAlls@aol.com
http://comicscontinuum.com/index.htmCartoon Network has released its programming schedule for August, which includes descriptions of four new episodes of Teen Titans. Here's a rundown of the Teen Titans episodes (all airing at 9 p.m.):
Saturday, August 2: "Divide and Conquer"- Cyborg quits the Teen Titans after getting into an argument with Robin, and allowing Cinderblock to escape. Cinderblock returns to his mysterious boss Slade with his prize: a sleeping inmate who becomes the monstrous Plasmus whenever he is awakened. Can the Teen Titans handle the Plasmus without Cyborg on their side?
Saturday, August 16: "Forces of Nature"- Dark clouds blow in, bringing Thunder and Lightning, two stormy brothers looking for a good time. Unfortunately their idea of fun is wrecking everything in sight. Meanwhile after one of Beast Boy's practical jokes misfires, Beast Boy learns his lesson. Can Beast Boy teach Thunder and Lightning his lesson before Slade harnesses the brothers' power to unleash a monster?
Saturday, August 23: "Sum of His Parts"- Cyborg is reminded he's not completely human, when his power cell dies during a wild junkyard battle with the Amazing Mumbo. The Titans fear Mumbo has taken their friend, and search the city for Cyborg. But Fixit, a cybernetic hermit who finds and repairs broken things, finds Cyborg. When repairs are complete, will Cyborg be human at all?
Saturday, August 30: "Nevermore"- Raven's creepy tantrum of crackling black energy leaves Dr. Light begging for mercy, and the Titans see a new side of Raven- her temper. But, when Cyborg and Beast Boy find a Mysterious Mirror in Raven's room, they're suddenly transported to a strange nightmare world that's somehow connected to Raven. Will Raven be able to guide the boys home, or will her "personal issues" destroy them all?

'Teen Titans': Poster children for vandals:
Well, summer is finally here. That means steamy temperatures, a slower pace . . . and larceny. This summer's item du jour, at least as far as the MTA is concerned, are posters advertising Cartoon Network's "Teen Titans" series, which have been disappearing from subway stops and trains at an alarming rate. The series won't debut until July 19 (9 p.m.), but already the posters are being swiped daily. Since the ad campaign began about a week ago, the MTA has requested an additional 1,000 posters to replace those stolen from subways and trains. There's even a web site, dccomics.com, that lists where posters are still available (to be ripped off?) - and they're available on eBay. "Teen Titans," based on the comic book series, is being produced under the guidance of Glen Murakami ("Batman Beyond"). (NY Post)

Comics Continuum Offers Teen Titans Peek
The upcoming Teen Titans animated series should have a wide appeal, creators of the show said. "I wouldn't say it's like a boys show or a girls show," said producer Glen Murakami. "I wouldn't say it's for little kids or I wouldn't say it's for teenagers. I think everyone's going to like it." "You give parents something that they can enjoy with their kids, where they're not sitting there rolling their eyes while some sort of thing with a television in its stomach dances around," said story editor David Slack. Marv Wolfman on Teen Titans: Second Season Coming?
courtesy of http://www.marvwolfman.com
posted March 7, 2003Just heard through the grapevine - and this is NOT official or even news I've verified (but since when does the internet deal with facts?) - that the Teen Titans animated show, which will be premiering this spring, may have been renewed for a second season! Let's hope that's true. Although I wrote an episode for the first season I really have no idea how the show is going to look once it's been animated. The show, which is anime styled, is aimed at our younger folk, not at the teenage and older audience of the comics, and the characters, though they're based on George and my Titans' heroes and villains, are not quite the same as long-time comic fans will remember. Still, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the people who brought you Batman, Superman and Static Shock will be continuing their high quality.

TEEN TITANS ANIMATED UPDATE
From Comics Continuum
Monday, January 20, 2003Andrea Romano, voice director of Cartoon Network's Teen Titans, told The Continuum that work on the show is going smoothly and on pace for its August debut. "We've got a terrific show," Romano told The Continuum. "There are hopes that we might get another 13 episodes right away."
Romano said that the last episode of the original 13 will be voice recorded on Friday. The main cast of Teen Titans includes Scott Menville as Robin, Tara Strong as Raven, Greg Cipes as Beast Boy, Khary Payton as Cyborg and Hynden Walch as Starfire. Strong, who was one of the actresses who provided Batgirl's voice, is really the only Teen Titans cast member with extensive experience in this genre.
"They're terrific, just wonderful to work with," Romano said of the youthful cast. "It's sort of a clean slate. There are no preconceived notions and no one is jaded." Romano said that Malcolm McDowell (Metallo on Superman) recorded a guest role two weeks ago.

Paul Letitz Talks Titans Toon and Titans Comic
from Topic: LOOKING BACK AND FORWARD WITH LEVITZ
Matt Brady Administrator Member # 3
posted January 06, 2003 01:36 PM ÊNewsarama: Speaking of Spider-Man a little, but moving back to DC, with the success of Marvel's movies and other media properties, Marvel has slowly, but enough to be noticeable to fans, moved the comic versions closer to the movie versions of the characters. DC seems to be doing this a little with Teen Titans, in canceling Young Justice to reassemble a Titans team that is in line with the upcoming animated series team; as well as with Smallville, in that Superman's past has come into play in a handful of recent stories. Is there a level of control exerted over DC by other arms of AOL-TW?
Paul Levitz: I think that questions is about three questions rolled up together. Question 1, I think on the narrow specific of the Teen Titans, the relaunch of the comic and the new animated show both look back to Marv and George's work as an emotional starting point on some level, but boy, do they go off in polar opposite directions. I'm hard pressed to remember an occasion on when we've had two more radically different interpretations of one of the properties going at the same time. So I don't think they're evidence of a grand plan to make it all follow one set of model sheets.
The anime-influenced visuals that Glen Murakami came up with for the animated show, and the very kid/bouncy/energetic style that's being used in the scripts take advantage of a lot of animation is great at that doesn't always translate well to comics.
I guess the second question is: are there cases where we're taking form the other media and bringing something good into the comics? I would hope so. When you get something like Smallville that, besides being successful, is as well done as it is, I think that has to influence you creatively.
I was talking this morning with Keith Giffen, and we were talking about whether the kid who's falling in love with Superman today is likely to be falling in love through Smallville, where we fell in love through the comics. But maybe some of the guys of my generation fell in love with the character through the George Reeves show, before they found the comic. Has the world changed? Yeah, but either way, you want to take the creativity that other people bring to the property and bring it back in. If someone discovers a new way to tell stories about a familiar face, let's take advantage of it.
I guess the last part of the question is if there's some grand plan? It's our role at DC to try and be the part of the company that preserves the characters across all the different media that they're in. The goal there is not that you should be able to do a future history timeline of Superman that identifies which day in February each story in each media takes place and how they fit together, but that someone who loves Superman should always find themselves comfortable with Superman in the different incarnations.

Teen Titans Guest Characters Revealed
Posted by Rob M. Worley
On Thursday, January 2, 2003
courtesy of comics2film.com
Comics2Film recently heard from a credible source who got a look at some of the work that's being done with the Teen Titans animated TV series. This is the same source that accurately informed us back in June that the core team would be composed of Beast Boy (ne Changeling), Raven, Cyborg, Starfire and Robin. Now, that source is able to tell us who some of the guest characters will be.It wouldn't be Teen Titans without Slade Wilson, better known as Deathstroke, The Terminator. This character was introduced in the second issue of the Wolfman/Pérez series and became an integral part of the Titans mythos.
Our source tells us that Wilson will be a key player in the animated show, acting more as a mastermind plotting against the Titans, and occasionally going into action as Deathstroke.
Fans can also look for an episode centering on the destructive Vietnamese due of Thunder and Lightning. These characters first appeared in the third year of Marv Wolfman and George Pérez's New Teen Titans. In that book they were depicted as young men with out-of-control super powers searching for their long-lost father. Eventually their involvement with the Titans allows them to learn the truth about their father and get their powers under control.
Our source is unsure how much the story adheres to the comic books, but she did say that the show's producers seem to be going for a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon feel to the episode.
Our source also revealed that at least one episode will feature frequent Titans foe Dr. Light. No other details about that one are available.

The voice cast for Teen Titans is as follows:

update>> november 28 >> 2002Wil Weaton on voicing Aqualad
Posted by wil at November 25, 2002 04:26 PM
http://www.wilwheaton.netIt's so windy here in Pasadena today, it's snowing leaves. There is this large area of a hillside in Burbank where there was a massive fire a few months ago, and a huge cloud of dust hovers over it, like a sandstorm. The Santa Ana Winds are in full effect, and my dry skin, nose and throat are a small price to pay for clear blue skies and warm temperatures in November.
So here's something unexpected: I did a voice today on this new show called "Teen Titans." The call came on Friday, and here's the cool thing: the director, a wonderful woman named Andrea Romano, who has won seven emmy's called my agent and requested me, based on my work with her last year on "The Zeta Project."
I did the voice of "Aqualad," and I was told when I left today that they were so happy, I would probably be asked back to do the role again in the next thirteen episodes. The episode I did was written by this really nice guy named Marv Wolfman, who co-created and wrote for "Teen Titans" for sixteen years, created "Blade," and was just an all-around cool guy. We spent some time geeking out about comic books today...it just killed me that he was referring to Alan Moore as "Alan."
Animation is really fun, because it's really quick work (usually less than 4 hours for an episode), and the people who do it are all really cool...but it's also very hard to break into the animation world, because the community is extremely small, and very protective. Being asked by a very respected director to come back, based on her previous experience with me, is just HUGE, and it makes me feel really good, and it may signal my entry into the world of animation.

Marv Wolfman On Writing Aqualad Episode: Deep Six
courtesy of http://www.marvwolfman.com
posted November 25, 2002
From left to right: Me, Wil Wheaton (Aqualad), Greg Cipes (Beast Boy), Tara Strong (Raven), Scott Menville (Robin), Dave Coulier (Tramm), and Hynden Walch (Starfire). Not pictured: Khary Payton (Cyborg).
They were recording "Deep Six," an upcoming episode Teen Titans animated show over at Warner Bros.TV Animation today and I was invited to watch the procedings (see photo). The show is based on the DC comic George Pérez and I created back in 1980 and features many of our characters, villains included.
There are changes, of course. While our Titans was written for a teenage and older comic book reader, this show is written for the younger TV audience. Several of our characters have origins that are a little excessive for the Kids WB where it will be shown (along with The Cartoon Network). For instance, in the comic, Raven's mom was raped by an inter-dimensional demon and Starfire was sold into slavery by her father. Not exactly kiddie fare. This show emphasizes action and fun. All the Titans favorites are here: Robin, Beast Boy (I still prefer the name Changeling) Cyborg, Raven and Starfire. I hope people will like the show when it airs sometime next year.
The people at Warners have all been great. Most of my conversations to date have been with story editor, David Slack, who I finally got to meet. I also spoke with producer Glen Murakami and most of the actors. The actor playing Cyborg was, unfortunately for me, in Romania working on a film so they were going to record his voice later on. Although I had not heard of many of the actors - voice people are often sadly overlooked - I knew Wil Wheaton who played this episode's guest star, Aqualad. Wil, of course, was on Star Trek: Next Generation. As a Trek nut - I've seen every episode of every Trek - it was great meeting him, and the fact that he turned out to be a nice guy and a comics fan helped a lot.
All the actors were wonderful and they all asked me to autograph their scripts which felt very strange. I mean, I'm the writer, they're the actors. It's supposed to go the other way. Several asked questions about their characters and I answered best I could, but I don't think I could provide a lot of help; these Titans are very different in so many ways and I didn't want to confuse them with the comic book versions which they weren't playing. I'd like to thank David for inviting me, Glen for being so kind as to let me watch, and all the actors for being so wonderful.

George Pérez Flattered by Titans Toon
published in COMICS BUYERS GUIDE #1515 (29 Nov 02)
website: www.comicsbuyersguide.com
also courtesy of http://vu.morrissey-solo.com/moz/Pérez/index.htmThrough he is not actively involved with the project, Pérez said he was pleased to hear about the Teen Titans cartoon in production for Cartoon Network. The new series features five of the seven characters that appeared in the launch of the New Teen Titans in 1980: Robin and Changeling (called his original name, Beast Boy, in the new animated series) along with the three characters Pérez and writer Marv Wolfman created for the series - Cyborg, Starfire, and Raven.
"I had absolutely nothing to do with the project itself but I am flattered, to say the least," he said.
Pérez said he first heard about the series when DC Publisher Paul Levitz called to let him know about it. "I thought that was a real classy thing for him to do. I am - from a financial point of view - very, very tickled about the Titans cartoon and I've been away from it long enough that I don't get bothered by the changes, since the book itself has gone through so many changes since I've been off it, for a decade now.

CARTOON NETWORK DEBUTS TEEN TITANS IN 2003

Article by Matt Brady
The Animated Teen Titans Team!
click on image for larger view![]()
Cartoon Network's Justice League series will get some younger company beginning in 2003, as the network today announced that it will debut an animated Teen Titans series. The team will be made of the Titans of the Wolfman-Pérez era with a few modifications, and include Robin, Cyborg, Beast Boy (using his original Doom Patrol-era name which was changed to Changling in the Wolfman-Pérez run and later changed back), Starfire and Raven.
Kid Flash and any young character related to the Wonder Woman mythos apparently will not be members of the team, at least at its beginning.
The half-hour animated action series is being produced by Warner Bros. Animation under the guidance of Glen Murakami. The series will be rebroadcast on Kids'WB! following its showing on Cartoon Network.
But don't necessarily look for a team-up with the Justice League...these Titans share more with the Legion of Super-Heroes than any current DC incarnation.
According to Cartoon Network:
Teen Titans, set in a future of intergalactic strife and interplanetary battles, features five teen superheroes each with special powers, led by the Boy Wonder Robin. This group unites to form a defensive force to protect the Earth from a new generation of villains. An eclectic group, their powers complement each other so that when they band together, they become a superb fighting force. Their personalities, on the other hand, often clash. Discovering how to control their powers, these Teen Titans must learn to work and grow as a team while dealing with the trials and tribulations of being teenagers.
"Cartoon Network has experienced great success with Justice League, so we know we have a loyal audience ready to embrace this exciting new show," said Jim Samples, General Manager and Executive Vice President, Cartoon Network. "These DC Comics characters have incredible powers, but struggle with how to use them. Teen Titans will mesh perfectly with our other action-adventure programming and thrill our viewers."
"Teaming up with Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network once again gives us an excellent opportunity to bring our core audience the newest high-adventure series, Teen Titans," said Donna Friedman, Executive Vice President, Kids' WB! "This series will be a perfect addition to our #1 line-up, as it features superhero action-packed adventures, comedy and kid-relatable characters and stories in this exciting new saga."
"The talented individuals producing this series are truly superheroes in the world of animation," said Sander Schwartz, President, Warner Bros. Animation. "Glen and his team will bring Teen Titans to life with all of the excitement and breathtaking quality that our audience has come to expect from Warner Bros. Animation."
"The New Teen Titans was a groundbreaking comic book as Marv Wolfman and George Pérez delved into the extraordinary challenges of living as a superhero teenager," said Paul Levitz, DC Comics President and Publisher. "With the animated series being brought to life by Glen Murakami's great team, we look forward to new worlds of creative magic."
Teen Titans made their comic book debut in 1964 and soon grew into its own Teen Titans monthly comic book series that ran for seven years. The basis for the animated television series, however, is the wildly successful revamped version of the original junior superhero formula. The New Teen Titans debuted in 1980 and was DC's most popular comic book of the decade that followed. The adolescent angst and emotional depth of The New Teen Titans made the series an instant classic with a whole new generation of comic book readers.

June 12, 2002Comics2Film's animation source gave us a mini-update on the planned Teen Titans animated show. This source provided us with plenty of good info on the Spider-Man animated show last summer.
Our insider tells us that the show is still not officially greenlit, although may be soon. Glen Murakami, producer of Justice League and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (among others) will be the main creative voice on the show. Our source said Bruce Timm will be an executive producer and the show will sport the Timm look, consistent with previous DC animated shows.
Finally our inside source said the current line-up for the team is Changeling, Raven, Cyborg, Starfire and Robin. Robin will be the younger, Tim Drake version seen in the latter episodes of the Batman animated shows. However, our source cautions that the show is still in development and plans may change.
Finally, a source at Weed Road Pictures told C2F that the animated show is not related to their planned live-action Teen Titans feature and one project does not effect the other. Currently Weed Road is seeking a writer for the project.
Paul Dini on Animated Titans
Paul Dini held a panel at the Philadelphia Wizard Con 2002. When asked about the Titans animated series, he revealed that it was in development at this time; He had seen character designs for Raven and Robin [he wasn't sure if it was Dick Grayson or Tim Drake]. He added that like Justice League, TITANS was developed as an amalgamation of different eras of Titans' history.
He wasn't sure if he was going to write any episodes, but he seemed open to the idea.
When asked about other ideas in development, Dini revealed the plans for a second Batman Beyond Animated Movie. The project is dead right now, but could resurface if Warner Brothers shows interest again.
The plot?
The plot deals with Dick Grayson's future. As Dini saw it, Grayson was very much into the family tradition of passing mantles onto the next generation [he was part of the flying Graysons after all]. So in the same mold as the MASK OF ZORRO movie [wherein an aging Zorro [Anthony Hopkins] trained a new Zorro [Antonio Banderas] to uphold the tradition], Dick Grayson would be training a Batman sucessor in his own city.
Well, what happens when Dick Grayson's Batman-trainee meets Terry McGuiness? And what if this new trainee challenges Terry for the role of the Dark Knight? And what if this new Dark Knight ... was a girl?

It had been rumored that Timm had expressed interested in developing a series on the project even before Justice League began. Although it's not confirmed, our sources believe that "Teen Titans" will take off after the second season of "Justice League".
In the comics, the Teen Titans came together to put a stop to the Justice League of America, which had been turned evil by aliens. The team consisted of Robin, Aqualad, Speedy, Wonder Girl and Kid Flash. Filmation Studios also produced a TV series in the late 1960's, based on the comic. Stay tuned for more on this!
