Zachary Zatara’s Family Roots explored in ZATANNA
By Nightwing. Filed in news and interviews |Though a lot about Zatanna’s world is new, it is still firmly rooted in the DC Universe. She’s still a JLA member, and that will play into her stories now and then. Also, I plan to explore her somewhat dicey relationship with her younger cousin, Zachary Zatara. I saw a good chance to inject some family discord there, so when I was developing the book, I ran some ideas by Geoff Johns. He created Zach, so I wanted to get his okay before I shook things up. Luckily Geoff was cool with what I wanted to do, so readers can expect to see Zach becoming a permanent part of Zee’s world.
Zachary Zatara is one of my favorite “new generation” Teen Titans characters, so I’m excited Paul Dini has taken an interest in him. Plus, we know nothing about his family history; He’s definitely connected to Zatanna on her father’s side (his last name is Zatara), which leads one to wonder why he even has latent magic powers (Zatanna’s mother was the magic-powered homo-magi one, not John Zatara…).
Check out the preview pages. And hey, is that Phantasm there?

O.M.G. something resembling continuity in the DCU? say it isn’t so!!!
Well, I applaud writers actually working together and consulting each other, maybe some of the A list names working on the flag ship books could take a lesson here instead of just grabbing a character out of the bin and making up an entirely new story about them every time they show up. This is definitely a step in the right direction, at least to me.

Zatara has become a favorite of mine sinde the ‘missing year’ Titans were introduced (and then forgotten). I feel like each of his limited appearances have worked together to make him an interesting character. I’m excited that he’s getting a bit of a spotlight here. Very intrigued that Phanstasm is with what looks like a group of baddies that have all come from Zatara’s mind…? I’ll be picking this up.

TitansFan, I do think Zatara benefits because from the outset, he had a VERY specific personality. And to counter his snotty attitude, they gave us his friendship with Kid Devil and his endearing attraction to Raven.
Unlike, say, a lot of the others. Young Frankenstein? Molecule? Mas Y Menos? Little Barda? Riddler’s Daughter? A lot of blank slates there. And even characters like Power Boy and Bombshell (who made a number of appearances since) weren’t portrayed consistently.
