Interviewer Jason Sacks reports: “I didn’t know what to expect when I set up an interview with Scott Lodbell. I’d read a lot of analysis of the man’s work, especially focused on the now notorious first issue of Red Hood and the Outlaws, and I was concerned that Scott would, honestly, be an obnoxious raging ideologue or something. It turns out I didn’t need to worry. Scott was a really nice guy to talk to — an interesting and honest interview subject who was completely candid.

Below is an excerpt from our conversation, the full extent of which you can check out in a special edition of our podcast, Comics You Can Dance To. If you have the time, please give it a listen. Most importantly, please leave a comment here and let us know: how does this conversation affect your perception of Scott Lobdell and his comics?”

Here’s some of what Scott had to say:

CB: What do you make of this kind of reactive approach that a lot of people have? We see it in politics and other areas of life these days, too.

Lobdell: The Internet just is fascinating to watch. It’s almost like if I type something onto my computer and other people click “like,” then my worldview must be the right worldview.

For example, I’ll read all these things about Red Hood and how Scott screwed up and that nobody’s buying the book and [that] it was a disaster and Lobdell really had to backpedal to make it all work. I’m thinking, “Okay, the sales for one came out and then the next issue, the sales went higher.” People [who] know comic books know that that almost never happens.

So to me, I’m thinking, “Okay, well I know the reality.” The reality is that more people read it, not less. So I know what the reality is, but you can type “Scott Lobdell Red Hood Sales” [into a search engine] and there will just be people lamenting about how bad it was, how he ruined it and [that there are] no new readers.

I don’t know what to do, because I know what reality is and I see what people say about it. If I had enough hours in the day, I could go on message boards and refute everything. It’s like Superman in Bizarro World; you’d have Metropolis and then you have the Internet where “Me Unhappy.” It’s interesting.

I’ve created so many characters that weren’t straight white, and suddenly, because I decide that Crux didn’t fit in with Red Hood and the Outlaws, I’m a racist. I’m like, “Okay, I guess today I’m a racist.” And tomorrow I’ll be a misogynist. But, again, people write what they want on the Internet and it becomes true because people have written it.

CB: You obviously feel a lot of frustration with what people said about you.

Lobdell: I have to say it’s more a matter of fascination. I’m just fascinated. It would be like if I was walking down the street and somebody said, “Here, hold this sign that says, ‘I’m a racist’.” I’d be like, “I’m not, but if you want me to hold this sign, I guess I will.”

The second season the YOUNG JUSTICE came with many surprises. Set 5 years later, viewers were treated to Dick Grayson as Nightwing, Tim Drake as Robin, Beast Boy, Cassie Sandsmark as Wonder Girl, Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, Bumblebee, Mal, Lagoon Boy, Blue Beetle and much, much more!

Producer Brandon Vietti shares some thoughts on his blog: “Hey, folks. Been awhile. Been busy makin’ a show. But things are winding down now. Greg and I are reviewing the last storyboards and designs for the last episode of Season 2 right now. Once that’s complete my work load will be considerably lighter which means I might actually get to post on this blog a little more. We’ll see.

Young Justice Season 2 begins airing tomorrow morning! We are very excited to share with you what we’ve been cooking up. We hope you’ll be pleasantly surprised- unless you’ve been poking around the internet, discovering leaks and spoiling the surprises for yourself. Spoiled or not, I hope you enjoy watching the official premiere of Young Justice Invasion as much as we enjoyed making it.”

Head on over to Brandon’s blog to see what else he has to say!

Today was the release of Dial H #1, DC’s latest revitalization of an old concept. One of the oldest mythos owned by DC, there have been two Titans who were owners of the powerful H Dial, Chris King and Hero Cruz. While more of an ally, Chris went to the Titans for help when his former friend and fellow dial owner Vicki Grant turned evil. Hero Cruz was a brief member of the failed Titans L.A. offshoot. Writer China Mieville has “neither confirmed nor denied” that any of the previous Dial owners would appear, but has promised easter eggs for the older fans. However, in the very first issue, we catch a glimpse of a couple in bed who closely resemble Chris King and Vicki Grant, as well as original Dial owner Robby Reed. Here’s the page. For Chris and Vicki, look below the hooded woman (Pandora):

This makes the arrival of yet another Titan into the DCnU, and another Titan villain, if it is indeed Chris and Vicki.

If it is the two though, then this could be considered a happy ending to their troubled relationship.

Time will tell if Hero Cruz might make an appearance, or if Mieville has more in store for the previous Dial users.

Newsrama Reports: “While DC’s familiar female characters are clearly wearing a whole new wardrobe in the new Ame-Comi Girls comics, they’re also being marketed with a whole new approach. Beginning in May, Ame-Comi Girls, based on the popular manga-inspired collectibles DC has been selling the past few years, will be released as a weekly series every Monday. ”

There’s more:

“The idea behind the series, Gray said, is to present recognizable icons in new and exciting ways with fresh voices.

“That includes the familiar cities of Metropolis and Gotham,” Gray added. “Some things will be subtle, but the idea was to take our cues from the designs and inject some things we’ve always wanted to do.

“The prime example is in making Wonder Woman younger, less mature and refined,” he said. “Our Diana is a brash and rebellious young princess who is forced into a position where she has to represent her people in a strange culture that she doesn’t like very much. Other smaller things like making Jimmy Olsen into an older sexy Sebastian Junger type photojournalist in love with Power Girl. Or the idea that Batgirl and Robin are enthusiastic teenage girls with their hands on this incredible technology and sneaking out at night to pick fights with criminals.”

All stories are written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, with Wonder Woman art by Amanda Conner and Tony Akins, Batgirl art by Sanford Greene, Duela Dent art by Ted Naifeh, Power Girl art by Mike Bowden and Supergirl art by Santi Casas.”

Here’s the AME-COMI Sculpture of Duela:

Sculpted by Jonathan Matthews – Clockwork cute and dressed to impress, Duela Dent is steampunk chic, strutting her stuff, backpack brimming with Joker toxin, and carrying a killer cane as she joins the popular Ame-Comi series! Gears and steam, lace and goggles, the booted and brass-buckled beauty Duela Dent is a corseted cutie, decked out in futuristic Victorian vixen attire. The rumored daughter of The Joker is one deadly doll!
