Get “Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the 9th Grade” Published

Many of you may or may not remember the six issue “Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade” miniseries by Landry Walker and Eric Jones that was published under the Johnny DC imprint.

It focused on Supergirl accidentally getting sent to Earth from her homeworld of Argo in “Quasi-Space”, and with Superman’s help she develops the secret identity of Linda Lee while she attends Stanhope Boarding School as Superman tries to figure out how to get Kara home. In the process, Linda makes friends with her roommate, science geek Lena Thorul, and makes an enemy out of Belinda Zee (a.k.a. Superior Girl), a duplicate of Linda created from kryptonite who makes it her mission to make Linda as miserable as possible. The series also had appearances by Streaky the Super-Cat, Comet the Super-Horse, a Linda from a parallel timeline who’s a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes named Supragirl, and non-speaking cameos by Wally, the God boy from Peter David’s series.

Though six issues, the series was amazingly hilarious and loaded with Easter eggs for any Supergirl fan to pour through. Among the highlights were Linda’s frequent fantasies about living on the moon as “Moon Supergirl”, and fighting “Moon Criminals”. My personal favorite is Belinda getting mauled by Streaky in the background of issue 4. There were also plans to have Brainiac 5 make an appearance. In my opinion, if DC had gone with this version of Supergirl, who is an eternal optimist but still a young girl, things would’ve been a LOT easier than the three years people had to endure of “Emo Girl” before Sterling Gates came along.

Anyway, Landry Walker and Eric Jones pitched a sequel series to DC, “Cosmic Adventures in the 9th Grade”, which would have furthered the development of Linda, Belinda, and Lena, as well as featuring appearances by Streaky, Linda’s evil alter-ego Satan Girl, a version of Metallo, and even Batman. DC hasn’t said no, but they aren’t sure. So, Landry has suggested that the fans voice their hope to see this sequel published by writing to DC.

I’ve just sent my letter to DC, but a couple of days ago I started a group on facebook to help raise support and awareness. Below you’ll find some examples of preliminary artwork by Eric Jones.

You can find more information about the proposed sequel at Landry’s blog.
