DVR Alert: Slade Wilson Hits SMALLVILLE
Just a reminder…. Slade Wilson appears on tonight’s episode of SMALLVILLE, “Patriot.”
The CW’s Official Description: DC COMICS CHARACTER AQUAMAN RETURNS WITH HIS WIFE MERA; TOM WELLING DIRECTS AND MICHAL HOGAN (“BATTLESTAR GALACTICA”) GUEST STARS AS COL. SLADE – In an effort to protect the rest of the team, Oliver (Justin Hartley) decides to register for the Vigilante Registration Act to see what the government plans to do with the new law. As he suspected, it was a trap to lure superheroes to an undisclosed location where he is confined to a jail and subjected to a battery of brutal tests under the supervision of Col. Slade (guest star Michael Hogan, “Battlestar Galactica”). Aquaman (guest star Alan Ritchson) and his new wife Mera (guest star Elena Satine) team up with Clark to free Oliver. Lois is frustrated when Clark continues to push aside her offers to help the team and sets out to prove she can play with the big boys. Posted on KryptonSite. Tom Welling directed the episode written by John Chisholm (#3X6009).
IGN reports that Battlestar Galactica’s Michael Hogan will be appearing in another episode as well, entitled “Icarus.”
Well…… not exactly the comic book interpretation, but then, Smallville is known for bucking the canon where possible. obviously he’ll be back before the series finale in some capacity though, so we’ll have to wait and see I suppose.
I was expecting someone younger – as, Slade would be more an anti-Capt. America type figure, a super soldier (either turned rogue or out to get the vigilantes). He may still get enhanced abilities (I think he’s due back for another episode?), but the actor is older than I anticipated (and older than I picture Slade).
I thought the actor was the right age. The problem is that in comics someone who is that age can be a super soldier, whereas in real life, it’s highly unlikely! Hogan definitely had the right look. But I couldn’t imagine him leaping over a building with a battlestaff or carrying on the way Slade does in the comics.
Honestly, I’m not thrilled with how Slade was presented. I’ve never seen him as a facist hyper-patriot. Yes, he wanted to serve his country originally in the comics, but he had a code of honor. Here’s he’s another uber-evil version of Paton. Also he’s not all that physically imposing. He looks more like a grumpy grandfather than the most dangerous mercenary on earth. I just found him underwhelming.
