Beast Boy

Titans Tower File Photos:

What he lacks in stature, he more than makes up for in attitude. Beast Boy is the changeling of the group, able to assume the shape of any animal – from a wolf to a pterodactyl. The green-skinned dynamo also has the corniest sense of humor and is the most eager to please and entertain the group. He’s never in a bad mood and is enthusiastic about every new adventure. He’ll try anything new and is not afraid to fail. In short, he’s like the ultimate little brother – except that he can change into an alligator.

The senior super-heroes known as the Doom Patrol adopted Beast Boy as their junior member and surrogate son. But when the overly-stern Mento clashed with Beast Boy’s failure to sacrifice the lives of his teammates, the green-skinned shape-shifter found his days with the Doom Patrol were numbered. Beast Boy eventually found a new home with the Teen Titans.

Beast Boy fell head over paws for Terra, who the Titans welcomed into their ranks. He was later heartbroken when he learned Terra was a spy sent by Slade to destroy the Titans from within. Never losing faith in Terra, Beast Boy did finally see her realize the error of her ways – before sacrificing herself to save the city.

Beast Boy later rescued the Doom Patrol from the hands of the evil crime syndicate known as the Brotherhood of Evil. The Teen Titans soon found themselves on a race around the world against the Brotherhood, who were trying to eliminate teen superheroes for their own sinister purposes. When Robin was captured, it was up to Beast Boy to save them all. Gathering new allies Jericho, Herald, Pantha and Mas, Beast Boy successfully led an assault team to liberate the Titans and defeat the Brotherhood of Evil.

Upon returning from his globe-trotting adventure, Beast Boy was shocked to discover a school girl who looked exactly like Terra! Finding Terra’s tomb empty, Beast Boy was convinced that Terra had indeed returned – and he pleaded with her to return to the team. But the school girl insisted that “things change” and she was not the girl he knew. Respecting the girl’s wishes, Beast Boy was able to let go of the past and look toward his own future.

  • In the comic books, Beast Boy was a member of another superhero team before joining the Teen Titans, he was a junior member of The Doom Patrol, a group of misfits and freaks.
  • The creative team on the animated series decided Beast Boy should not talk while in animal form.

Producer Glen Murakami on Beast Boy: “That was something that everyone brought up “Oh, he looks like Eddie Munster.” But I don’t think that was really conscious. I think I was just trying to match the name more so when you look at him you go, “Oh, OK. That makes sense.” I just thought doing a normal boy who was green just didn’t make too much sense. I didn’t think he fit the name enough.”

After undergoing an experimental medical treatment to save his life, Gar Logan (also known as the Changeling in the comic series) gained the ablity to transform his physical structure into any animal he could imagine. Beast Boy first appeared in THE DOOM PATROL #99 [1965], where he became a junior member. Beast Boy changed his name to Changeling and joined the New Teen Titans in NEW TEEN TITANS #1 [1980].

Much like his animated counterpart, Beast Boy was the jokester of the team. Also, being the youngest member, he sometimes felt insecure around his more confident teammates.

Greg Cipes (the voice of Beast Boy)
There is always a class clown in every clique, and for the Teen Titans, Beast Boy is definitely it. Aside from adding quick wit and comic relief to the teenage mix, Beast Boy can morph into any animal to suit the situation. Greg Cipes is the voice behind this good humored, green character. He is also a regular voice on Cartoon Network’s Justice League and Nickelodeon’s Rugrats’ All Growed Up as well as series regular Atlas on Kids WB’s Astro Boy. Greg is also the lead in the new Disney series, Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go.

Greg also stars in HBO’s highly anticipated series, “Deadwood,” a western drama. When not behind the microphone or in front of a camera, Greg is a champion surfer, and also sings and plays lead guitar for his band, Jah Public. (Source: Cartoon Network official press kit)
